A former engineer, D’banj launched his full-time music career in 2004 with a record deal on Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits label in 2004. Tyla is not interested in the “I can’t believe I’m here role.” She worked hard to reach here. “I never had an example of how to be an African pop star. So I was literally shooting in the dark. And I know people think it came out of nowhere and we are just industry plants. But it’s been years of work, years of developing, of falling, of messing up, of dreaming, sitting up for hours and hours watching YouTube videos…” she says.

The South African music star came into the limelight with her hit song “Water” released in July 2023 and has not looked back since then. The song took over social media with its water-pouring TikTok dance and amassed a monthly Spotify stream of 29 million. This year, the song won her first Grammy Award in the Best African Music Performance category. Unfazed by comparisons to Rihanna, Tyla considers it a compliment, acknowledging Rihanna’s iconic status while asserting her own identity: “I’m my own artist. I’m Tyla.”

In this cover interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, Tyla talks about almost everything, from her family background, the immense success of her breakout hit “Water,” representing African Music on the global stage, a recent tour cancellation due to injury, her musical influences and more.

On her hit song “Water” and how she knew it would be big

“I recorded it in a bedroom. I never thought, This song is going to blow up. And then I started performing it and seeing everyone singing every word. And I knew it was something bigger than what we thought. People from everywhere are listening to it and dancing to it, no matter their age. There’s babies, there’s old people. I just love that it’s an African sound that is so universal.”

On how her life has changed since the release of the song  

“So many things have changed. I still live in South Africa, but I was able to move my parents, my family. Now they’re in a safer area. My family came to Dubai with me. I was able to bring them to Europe. I’m able to show my parents the world at this age, you know? Years back, I was crying on my parents’ bed, saying, “Can I sing, please? Can I just do this? I don’t want to go to university.” Now they are watching me win and they are seeing plaques and posters. The first time my parents got to be in America, they saw their daughter win a Grammy.”

On her back injury and cancelling the tour

“Yeah, unfortunately, I had to postpone the tour. Obviously, I wanted to do all the shows, but it didn’t really make sense considering the injury and the recommendations from the doctor. I’ll be back on it very soon, and I will be giving my Tygers the best show ever. I just need to slow down a bit more and just be easy on myself. I’m still recovering. At least I have medicine that helps ease the pain. It sucks, but I know God’s going to bring me out of it.”

On how she creates a balance 

I have a really good team and I have really good people around me that are from home, so I’m always reminded where I’m from. And my family. I’m very much grounded. I feel like the way we grew up, we are playful and do not take things too seriously. But also, God gives me peace always. No matter what happens, I know that eventually, it’s going to be the way God wants it to be.”

Cameroonian-American singer Libianca is advocating for the victims affected by the aftermath of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon through her new single “God’s People.”

“If you want to help the Anglophones, listen to this song,” she says. “I’ve released GOD’S PEOPLE everywhere to raise funds from my stream profits to help victims of the Anglophone crisis in Cameroon. You would be joining me to support some people in my country who’ve lost their families, their hopes in making their dreams come true, and their education. If I’m influential, I might as well influence others to show love to each other.”

The Anglophone Crisis remains a pressing issue in the Republic of Cameroon in Central Africa, with English-speaking Ambazonian separatists fighting for the independence of the former British trust territory of Southern Cameroons.

UK rapper Giggs, also known as “Godfather”, has recently unveiled the much-anticipated official music video for his latest track, ‘Hallelujah’. This new song sees him collaborating with Nigerian singer-songwriter, Lojay, adding an international flair to the mix.

Directed by Earthboi, the music video is a blend of modern high-definition cinematography and a nostalgic vintage-style film aesthetic. Inspired by her earthy roots and literary background, Mide Fash explores her deep interest in the concept of love and chaos. According to her, her debut “Gold And Fire” captures the playful sound between the sweetness of love and the potential for chaos, creating a soulful and effervescent sound

Today, Time Magazine released its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, the 2024 TIME100. Among this year’s members are inspiring prominent figures of African descent across various fields, including Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy, the president of Kenya, William Ruto and South African rugby player, Siya Kolis. The list also recognises social entrepreneur and author from Kenya, Kennedy Odede, Ghanaian-Scottish architect, Lesley Naa Norle Lokko, Ugbadian LGBT advocate, Frank Mugisha, and Congolese human rights activist Julienne Lusenge.

This prestigious list also pairs each member with a guest contributor TIME selects to write about them.

Grammy-winning musician, Angélique Kidjo, who collaborated with Burna Boy on her song “Do Yourself, praises his role in elevating African music globally. She wrote, “Ten years ago or so, when young African musicians would come to me for advice, I would tell them, “You don’t need to mimic American artists! The world needs the amazing richness and beauty of our traditional African music and our culture… Burna Boy has made that vision a global reality. Inspired by the fantastic drums of Nigerian folk music, and studied in the craft of the great African singer-songwriters, he follows in the footsteps of Fela Kuti—the internationally celebrated Afrobeats artist and activist. Burna Boy’s deeply original flow and his signature groove have conquered the world with an impressive series of firsts: in 2023, he became the first African artist to sell out a U.S. stadium, and in 2024, he became the first Afrobeats artist to sing at the Grammys.

Burna Boy, paired with 21 Savage, expresses his admiration for artists who stay true to their convictions and commends 21 Savage’s authenticity and relatable approach to rap.
