]]>
Did you know that globally, only 2 in 10 cybersecurity professionals is a woman? Additionally, in Africa, just 9% of the cybersecurity workforce is female, despite the population being evenly distributed across genders.

The primary barriers to diversity, viewed through the lens of gender, are belief, access, and representation. Addressing these challenges is the CyberGirls Fellowship’s mission—a transformative initiative dedicated to bridging this divide and empowering young girls and women to become leaders in cybersecurity.

The CyberGirls Fellowship stands as one of Africa’s largest free cybersecurity training and mentorship program for young women. Through an intensive 8-month training program, participants receive free cybersecurity training and mentorship opportunities, positioning them to pursue global opportunities in the field. Read more about the CyberGirls Fellowship here.

Christine, a beneficiary of the 2024 cohort of the CyberGirls Fellowship, faced financial constraints in her pursuit of upskilling. She had to save up 10 months of her bursary money to invest in her first cybersecurity certification. For her, this fellowship represents a gateway to achieving her dreams of securing a role in cybersecurity despite her socioeconomic status.

Since its inception in 2021, the CyberGirls Fellowship program has transformed the lives of 1000 individuals across 3 cohorts, opening doors to opportunities that were once beyond reach. Consider the story of Abigail, who was only 18 when she trained with CyberGirls to become a skilled web application penetration tester. Today, Abigail works for a US-based company, breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings, paving the way for future generations of women in cybersecurity.

Similarly, Kachipa, who once worked as a waitress at a pizza restaurant in South Africa, has, through the program’s support and guidance, mastered the intricacies of cybersecurity and discovered her innate potential as a leader.

Today, she is a cloud security analyst, and her income, which has increased by 450%, enables her to provide a better future for herself and her family. Kachipa serves as an inspiration to countless other young women, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.

These stories offer just a glimpse of the impact CyberGirls has had on individuals and communities in Africa. However, as remarkable as the CyberGirls Fellowship has been, challenges have arisen in securing the funding required to run our 2024 cohort, which aims to empower 500 women and girls from 27 African counties.

If you had the opportunity to help a young woman pursue her dreams of a career in cybersecurity, would you make it happen with your donation? You can be a catalyst for change by supporting the CyberGirls Fellowship 2024 cohort. Your contribution will enable young girls to access life-changing opportunities and embark on a journey towards a rewarding career in cybersecurity.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

 1. Make a one-time donation of $200 to sponsor a CyberGirl through our 8-month training program.
 2. Set up a recurring payment of $50 per month for 4 months to provide sustained support to our participants.
 3. Donate any amount you can.

Click here to donate now! Your donation through the CyberSafe Foundation is not just an investment in individual lives; it’s an investment in a more inclusive and secure future for us all.

Please note: Your donation is tax-deductible if you live in the United States of America.

There’s much work to be done, and support is needed to transform the potential of 500 young women across Africa into today’s cyber talent and tomorrow’s cybersecurity leaders. Join to #MakeHerCyberDreamComeTrue.

Unveiling the Inspiration Behind Elsie Rogers’ Bestselling Book: Autistic: Leaping Over Walls Whilst Living With Autism https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/04/autistic-leaping-over-walls/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 08:00:51 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1651601 By Taiwo ‘Ed’ Oluseye

The post Unveiling the Inspiration Behind Elsie Rogers’ Bestselling Book: Autistic: Leaping Over Walls Whilst Living With Autism appeared first on BellaNaija - Showcasing Africa to the world. Read today!.

]]>
Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live with autism in a world that often doesn’t understand it?

Elsie Rogers, an autistic author herself, tackles this question in her groundbreaking book, “Autistic: Leaping over walls while living with autism.” This powerful narrative goes far beyond a story of trials and tribulations. Rogers offers insightful perspectives that challenge denial and promote acceptance of autism within ethnic minority communities, sparking important conversations about a topic often overlooked.

Elsie offers honest reflections on the daily struggles and triumphs of raising a son with autism, from meltdowns to milestones. The story beautifully weaves the unique experiences of her two sons, revealing the profound impact autism has on the entire family. Laced with moments of warmth and humour that will make you laugh and cry along with her, Elsie’s journey is a testament to resilience, love, and the importance of maintaining hope even in the face of adversity.

“Autistic: Leaping over walls while living with autism” is not just another tale; it’s a beacon of knowledge and empowerment. Elsie provides verifiable information and effective tools for anyone dealing with autism, granting them the power to navigate the challenging terrain with confidence.

Particularly relevant for African families navigating the complexities of autism, the book offers Elsie’s personal experiences alongside insights on navigating resources and fostering inclusion within African communities. It provides practical guidance on accessing support services and creating a more inclusive environment for autistic individuals.

The book serves as a comprehensive guide in helping people living with Autism aspire and actualise their dreams regardless of the society they live in. It provides valuable insights on navigating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to build a society that embraces Autism. It highlights scenes of coping with a child living with Autism and still being a normal parent living a happy and balanced life.

With its wealth of information, readers gain a deeper understanding of how to access a society that values and accommodates the diverse needs of individuals living with autism, creating a more harmonious and inclusive world for everyone.

Within the pages of this captivating book, Elsie’s indomitable spirit shines as she recounts her battle and ultimate victory in raising her autistic son, Joshua. The news of his diagnosis at the tender age of five shook Elsie to her core twenty years ago.

Yet, armed with unwavering determination, she fearlessly confronted every challenge that accompanied caring for a child with autism. While doubts initially clouded her mind, Joshua has proven time and again that his potential knows no bounds.

Today, he is a beacon of inspiration, possessing a remarkable knack for self-help skills, an unwavering passion for music, and unmatched talent in the artistic realm. His numerous victories in art competitions and his mesmerizing performance at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, where he showcased his self-taught piano skills, leave no doubt of his extraordinary abilities.

Joshua’s zest for life extends beyond his achievements; he wholeheartedly embraces his role in assisting with household duties and radiating contagious happiness. From school trips to cherished family vacations, he relishes every moment that life offers.

In the gripping narrative, the book details a pivotal period as Elsie and her family bid farewell to Hamburg, cautiously making their way back to their homeland after a seemingly ill-fated vacation abroad. Little did they know that a moment of chaos awaited them at the airport, when a vigilant security official singled out a stunned Joshua, sparking a whirlwind of tension, later making him become overwhelmed by the unexpected situation.

As fear gripped her heart as a mother, they valiantly navigated this unexpected ordeal, emerging triumphant against all odds.

Elsie’s memoir delves deep into the challenges she encountered during Joshua’s early diagnosis, delving into the isolation that plagued her family, particularly as a minority within their community, grappling with the stigma surrounding disabilities. Through her heartfelt revelations, Elsie offers solace and guidance to other families navigating similar paths.

She openly shares the invaluable therapeutic techniques she employed to enhance her son’s growth. These simple practices, such as fostering eye contact, incorporating swimming activities, and employing basketball exercises to instil the essence of taking turns, provided vital stepping stones on Joshua’s path toward progress.

The book also includes the perspective of Joshua’s older brother, offering a glimpse into the unique challenges and rewards of siblinghood within an autistic family. The brother shares his experiences of growing up alongside Joshua, highlighting the complexities and joys of their sibling relationship.

Bittersweet emotions flood his narrative as he recounts their separation during his departure for university, confronting the heart-wrenching truth that he would be leaving Joshua behind. The weight of this separation and the uncertainty of their mother’s ability to single-handedly cater to Joshua’s needs added to his anguish. However, the brotherly love shared among them, cultivated through years of growing side-by-side, remained resolute.

Transport stakeholders drawn from the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Police Force, and the ride-hailing company inDrive have agreed to join forces in deepening awareness of safety issues among drivers and riders.

This submission was made in Lagos State during the Safety Education event organised by inDrive on Thursday, April 18th, 2024 in partnership with the Nigerian Police Force and the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation.

Speaking at the occasion, the Director of Transport Operations, Lagos Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Olasunkanmi Ojowuro emphasised that all relevant stakeholders should intensify yearly efforts to train commuters and drivers, focusing on safety measures and road signage.

Ojowuro equally called on law enforcement agencies to step up to ensure adequate enforcement of violators of traffic laws in the State, He stated that the Lagos State Government was playing its part in providing the much-needed infrastructure to enhance road safety and providing manpower support.

He urged all road users to adhere strictly to traffic and safety laws as enshrined in the state’s guiding principles, adding that this would help reduce the number of accidents leading to deaths and injuries and ensure the efficient management of traffic flows.

Also speaking, Senior Business Development Representative for inDrive, Timothy Oladimeji highlighted the newly added safety features on the inDrive app that form part of inDrive’s existing Safety Center. These features allow users to add more emergency contacts, make sharing ride information with authorities easier, and improve in-app communication between riders and drivers.

Oladimeji stated that the ride-hailing app has many security features that can assist the rider and the driver against security threats. Highlighting some safety features, he urged road users, including drivers, to avoid any act that goes against the tenets of safety on the road.

The latest updates to the safety features are part of the inDrive Safety Pact, enhancing a comprehensive suite of safety measures. These include driver verification and onboarding, real-time ride sharing with trusted contacts, and the ability for riders and drivers to make informed choices based on ratings, reviews, and full details of rides. This empowers users to make safety-conscious decisions, reinforcing inDrive’s commitment to putting the power of choice firmly in the hands of its users.

Oladimeji stated that the ride-hailing app has many security features that can assist the rider and the driver against security threats. Highlighting some safety features, he urged road users, including drivers, to avoid any act that goes against the tenets of safety on the road.

“Your belongings should always be with you, whether you are in the car or not. Users should not enter cars whose description does not match the car description on the inDrive app. Should you have an incident where you feel unsafe, have your belongings stolen, or even something smaller than that, it should be reported on the inDrive app through feedback or support. On the inDrive app, all users must give feedback about a driver before a new ride can be requested,” he said.

He emphasized that inDrive is fully committed to working closely with law enforcement agencies. The ride-hailing company stands ready to collaborate proactively with relevant authorities to identify and address any criminal activities that may occur during commutes. “If there is an incident with a driver or vice versa, a police report should be filed so that there is a record of the incident. If the passenger wants to press charges, the police will contact inDrive to get the necessary details of the driver, and they will work hand in hand with the authorities to fulfil the services they have made to passengers. These are safety measures taken after a trip,” he said.

In her remarks, Chief Superintendent of Police, Nigerian Police Force, Funmilayo Omosehin, stressed the need for drivers to be more responsible while driving. In a proactive move to address the pressing issues in the nation’s child nutrition sector and ensure the health and well-being of its youngest citizens, AugustSecrets , a prominent child nutrition brand, is set to host Nigeria’s first Child Nutrition Summit on Friday, April 26th, 2024, in Lagos.

The summit will bring together stakeholders in nutrition, policy-making, family nutrition programs, international organizations, NGOs, academic institutions, and other prominent voices in the child nutrition ecosystem, to critically discuss the theme “Feeding the Future: securing optimal child nutrition and health today”.

AugustSecrets is one of the leading nutrition companies that focuses on young children, and young people to give them a healthy start in life. The goal is to help parents at home and abroad feed their families wholesome options rather than only foods made from ultra-processed ingredients.

Recognizing the crucial role of parents in child nutrition, the summit will also provide a platform for them to share their experiences, challenges, and insights, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.

The dialogue and the sharing of best practices, as well as options for sustainability at the Summit, will enhance the capacity of professionals to curate and interpret data related to child growth and nutrition.

At the conference, AugustSecrets will also emphasize the roles optimal nutrition plays in national development, highlight the vast deficits that need urgent action, and contribute its quota to the nation’s strategic plan to ensure a robust and sustainable future for children.

Renowned voices and thought leaders, including the Chairman of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Lagos Chapter, Collins Akanno; Nigerian Culinary & Gastronomic Expert & Advisory Board Member for August Secrets, Iquo Ukoh; Founder, Shreddergang, Bunmi George (Jbums); Clinical Nutritionist, Funmi Ijiwola and Paediatrician and Medical Consultant at Lagos State Health Service Commission & Child Health Advocate, Dr Ayodele Renner, are set to share their invaluable insights and expertise at the summit.

AugustSecrets Founder and CEO Toyin Onigbanjo said the event reinforces the importance of children’s diet and lifestyles by recognizing nutrition’s critical role in various stages of development.

“The Child Nutrition Summit is not just an event but a manifestation of our vision of a robust and sustainable future for our children. It is even much more important for the whole family to be a shining example of wholesome nutrition using our everyday African superfoods and this is the essence of the Summit.

Emphasizing proper nutrition during the pivotal early developmental years is a testament to our commitment, as we view children’s health as a paramount national priority. Extending our focus to encompass family nutrition further solidifies our dedication to fostering a healthy society.

She emphasized that the Summit was a pivotal component of AugustSecrets’ efforts to enhance the quality of information available on child & family nutrition.

“Our primary objective is to empower participants and enhance their understanding of nutrition for the entire family, acknowledging the significant impact of the family environment on children’s nutrition, health and overall well-being.

As Nigeria becomes a global model in safeguarding children’s rights and enhancing their welfare, this theme is more crucial than ever.”

The event promises to be enlightening and entertaining and will feature interactive plenaries, actionable takeaways, nibbles, and cocktails as well as networking opportunities for guests. Interested participants can email events@glgcommunication.com or click HERE to register for FREE.

Ten years ago, Nigeria made history, as Port Harcourt assumed its tenure as UNESCO World Book Capital, beating 8 contenders, including Oxford.

Rainbow Book Club founder, Koko Kalango, with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka (who gave the keynote address), at the opening ceremony of Port Harcourt World Book Capital 2014 on April 23rd (World Book & Copyright Day)

A decade after, the Rainbow Book Club, Project Managers of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital programme, are launching two(2) exciting initiatives;

 • Talking Books Africa is a monthly, virtual, live conversation with authors which debuted with the award-winning Chibundu Onuzo as a guest.
 • R.O.A.R. Africa series (biographies of notable Africans for young readers), beginning with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, who turns 90 this year. This initiative is a partnership with UNESCO Paris.

Today, April 23rd 2024, Strasbourg, France assumes the World Book Capital title.

The ‘Get Nigeria Reading Again’ campaign, which the Rainbow Book Club, kicked off with Chimamanda Adichie in 2005, played a significant role in Port Harcourt’s nomination as World Book Capital 2014.

From 2008, the Garden City Literary Festival (later named the Port Harcourt Book Festival) drew writers, artists, book lovers, other creatives and culture connoisseurs from across Nigeria, Africa and other continents to the city of Port Harcourt.

“This festival was described by This Day publication as ‘arguably the biggest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa’ was sponsored by the Rivers State Govt. and hosted by the Rainbow Book Club.” – Rainbow Book Club

At the opening ceremony of Port Harcourt’s year-long World Book Capital tenure, Wole Soyinka, in his keynote address, spotlighted the importance of the book in national development and the threat to education, highlighting the plight of the Chibok girls who had been kidnapped from their school two weeks earlier. Obi Ezekwesili, former education minister, made the call to bring back the girls, sparking off an international campaign for education.

Nigeria’s musicians (now Grammy award winner Burna Boy, Timi Dakolu, MI, Waje, Yemi Alade and Nosa) lent their voices to the reading campaign as they rendered the PH World Book Capital theme song.

The dozen programmes of the World Book Capital year included 200 book clubs set up in schools, the establishment of a 350-seater library sponsored by Shell, as well as stories written by children from the 23 Local Govt. Areas of Rivers State and the 36 states of Nigeria, about their communities and published in books.

Hay Festival and Rainbow Book Club collaborated on the ‘Africa 39’ project that selected and celebrated 39 of Africa’s most promising writers under the age of 40. Other international partners on this project included the Caine Prize and PEN International. In that year, Port Harcourt World Book Capital exhibited at the Cape Town Book Fair, the London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Other partners, who are working with Rainbow to spread the joy of reading include Nigeria LNG and TOTALENERGIES.

The Rainbow Book Club pioneered getting notable people to read to children to stimulate their interest in books. Readers have included VP Osinbajo, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Soyinka, Former Governors Babatunde Fashola and Rotimi Amaechi, Ministers Dora Akunyili, Henry Odein Ajumogobia, Emeka Anyaoku, Burna Boy, etc.

The creative and passionate Rainbow Book Club team is led by its founder, Koko Kalango, whose work in social development, earned her a national award in 2014.

Lagos-based fashion designer and founder of IAMISIGO, Bubu Ogisi sits with Business and Booze host Koye ‘K10’ Kekere-Ekun to provide insight on running her Lagos-based fashion label dedicated to preserving ancestral textile techniques and provides insights into her entrepreneurial journey as she shares her challenges and triumphs in the fashion industry.
Known for her commitment to preserving ancestral textile techniques, Bubu Ogisi shares her journey as a fashion designer deeply rooted in spirituality. She discusses the challenges of navigating the industry while staying true to her beliefs and how she copes with going against the norm.

According to the fashion designer, she says:

I studied Computer Science during my undergraduate studies and proceeded to do a master’s in Fashion Business in Paris. I wanted to figure out the actual business aspect of fashion because it is the difficult part that many creatives don’t understand and it is the only way to be sustainable. Communication, strategy and marketing are the important aspects of doing business as a creative. If you don’t understand that, you get a lot of people failing and moving on to other things without being consistent.

From her innovative approach to design to her unwavering dedication to cultural heritage, Bubu provides unique insights into the fashion landscape, offering inspiration for entrepreneurs carving their paths.

You cannot just stumble on the business part of your creative business. I grew up across Lagos, London and Accra and moved to Paris where they didn’t speak English and I had to understand how to not stay back there and contribute to their society. I wanted to come back to contribute to my society and continent. It was more important for me to come back here and impact what I had learnt.

Tunde Onakoya has completed a 60-hour chess marathon, aiming to set a new Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon. For 60 hours in the heart of New York’s Times Square, he battled opponent after opponent, fueled by determination and a mission to raise $1 million for children’s education in Africa. “Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” the chess master and founder of Chess In Slum Africa says. For this cause, Tunde initially aimed to play for 58 consecutive hours.

But after playing for 58 hours and breaking the record, he pushed further for 2 more hours, making it 60 hours. “We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.” he said.

The current Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds and was set by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018.

As typical of the Nigerian supportive spirit, supporters from New York’s Nigerian community, including Afrobeats stars Davido and Adekunle Gold showed up at the Times Square to cheer Tunde. Back home in Nigeria, the nation rallied behind him as they watched him conquer the record on Twitch, with former vice president of Nigeria and current vice president Yemi Osinbajo and Kashim Shettima offering their public support.

“Let the dynamic energy of Times Square amplify the greatness that you, a proud Nigerian, bring to the chessboard. We’re all behind you—show the world the strength and determination you’re made of,” the former vice president said.

“Lagos is for you as you attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at Times Square in the heart of New York, ” said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State.

At 40 hours

When he hit the current record of 56 hours

Bola Edwards’ living room has been transformed into a giant stage. Large styrofoam books stand tall while an oversized pencil crafted from plywood balances on a brown wall. The opposite wall is a fuchsia pink. The space looks like a classroom from a child’s whimsical imagination.

In the middle of the room stands an armchair upholstered in the swirling patterns of African textiles. It is here, at the centre of things, that the fictional grandmother character “Grandma Wura” comes to life, sharing stories with young African minds around the globe.

Ever since the character’s debut in 2015, Grandma Wura has been integral to Edwards’ work with her company, Proud African Roots.

She founded the creative arts company with her husband, Patrick, in 2013, a year after leaving her corporate job. Their mission was to raise a new generation of African leaders by blending African arts and storytelling with tangible lessons on values and leadership. Their strategy was multifaceted – leveraging stories, music, and drama to educate their young audience.

“Children are much like sponges; they’re extremely impressionable. At this age, whatever values you want to instil in them, you just have to put in a story,” Edwards explained.

Yet, capturing the children’s attention required significant effort.

“Our children are now more Western, and to reach them we have to find a way to bring together Western and African cultures to create relatable content,” she said.

This birthed the grandmother character that embodied this cultural fusion.

“We did a lot of research to craft Grandma Wura’s identity,” Edwards said. “When you see Grandma Wura, you see more than just the Ankara (African textile) and buba (traditional blouse); you’re met with an array of colours, beauty, and an exotic allure,” she added.

While Edwards was aiming to create a character with a global appeal, like Disney’s iconic figures, she did not initially see herself in the role. “When the character was first conceived, it seemed so big and I began searching for someone who could truly personify her,” she said. However, she struggled to find someone willing to dedicate the necessary time to portray the character. So she committed to voice training and began studying elderly women.

Grandma Wura was unveiled during the company’s school tour, where she told stories to children and offered leadership training during their assembly time, reaching over 22,000 school children.

The project expanded into theatre productions, where entire families could experience the stories in an engaging and communal setting. Promoted as “Story Theatre with Grandma Wura,” the production became an annual Children’s Day event.

“The concept was to get children to come and see the stories come alive on stage, like you would in the King and I Broadway musical,” Edwards said.

In addition to the school tours, she shared that the shows included a capacity-building programme, training approximately 600 children.

“Story Theatre with Grandma Wura has evolved in many ways,” Edwards noted. “We had individuals sponsoring orphanages and students to see our shows. Some schools and parents bought their tickets themselves,” she explained.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic compelled Edwards and her team to pivot towards television and other digital platforms to retain their audience. Consequently, they launched two television shows: “Grandma Wura School Bus” and “Grandma Wura Story Hut.”

The “School Bus” is an entertaining educational series that introduces children to new vocabulary, values, and African proverbs. In contrast, “Story Hut” is reminiscent of African folktales, although Edwards’ stories were original and largely created in-house. So far, she has completed two seasons for each show.

The stories are packed with lessons, employing repetition and songs for reinforcement. “At the end of each story, there’s a recap. Some stories have even been transformed into books available on Amazon,” Edwards shared.

Grandma Wura’s shows, beyond imparting moral lessons, often acquaint children with the diverse languages and cultures of Nigeria’s ethnic groups and those of other African countries. “I Wish I Wish,” a story about self-love and hard work, featured a protagonist and expressions from the Igbo tribe, which, along with Hausa and Yoruba – Edwards’ native tribe – is one of Nigeria’s three largest ethnic groups.

Before her content went on television, Edwards released it on the company’s YouTube channel, where, to her surprise, it garnered an audience that included children and families from the African diaspora.

Her partnership with television stations resulted in Grandma Wura’s content being broadcast on several local stations and regional satellite provider DSTV, expanding its reach across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda, Gambia and even in the US and UK, through NTA International.

Initially, Edwards faced challenges with television companies because they favour foreign programming. When they did agree to air Grandma Wura’s content, it was without compensation.

A 2021 UNESCO report shows that while local television series in countries like Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire have increased, intra-regional co-productions in Africa are still rare. In contrast, there are often stronger collaborations between some African countries and Europe, driven by subsidies from the latter.

“Most of what we, as Africans, provide for our children is Western content. Children need to see themselves reflected in the content they consume, and that’s why we do what we do,” Edwards said. Not just the stories, but the soundtracks in Grandma Wura’s shows are original. “Our songs have a mix of African languages and English,” she explained.

In one of the rooms of her house, she set up a studio where Patrick and their 17-year-old son, David, spend most of their time during peak production periods.

“Introducing an African element is a must when we compose a song,” Patrick said. “David and I collaborate (in the studio). He is the younger version of me and connects with the youth, so there is a perfect blend of the old and the new,” he added.

David was not always interested in the production process.

“I kind of found my path after awakening … it’s somewhat like a journey of discovering myself within our African culture through arts, music, and everything creative,” David explained.

Just a few months ago, he was a core part of the production team for the nine-episode climate change podcast series, “Green Tales of Singing Trees.”

Much like the Grandma Wura character, the podcast’s central figure, Singing Tree, was unusual but charming. “It was delightful to see how much the children and their families loved her,” Bola Edwards remarked.

During production, Edwards and her team grappled with the challenge of discussing a complex subject like climate change, especially considering the wide variance in climate change literacy rates across Nigeria. To navigate this hurdle, she made sure the team was thoroughly engaged.

“One of the things that we did with the podcast, besides using a video teaser, was to use lots of sound effects to colour the story and take the listener on a journey,” Edwards said.

“In my experience, utilising audiovisual learning has proven to be the most effective means of conveying information to children,” explained Ogunsola Ayooluwa, the vice president of Eco Diversified International who has spent the past two years educating young people about the environment and climate change.

Ayooluwa pointed out that the lack of climate change topics in school curricula and the scarcity of educational materials are barriers to raising awareness among young people.

Edwards’ living room is now being overhauled for the third season of the “Grandma Wura School Bus” show. She has done this for every new season to ensure a fresh look while keeping its appeal to her young audience.

“The future of African traditional storytelling is humongous,” Edwards said, referencing “Iwájú,” the Nigerian animated series selected to stream on Disney+ before turning to the topic of Afrobeats, the sound that has gripped global audiences.

“Do you see how the whole world has gravitated towards the music genre?”

Edwards stressed the importance of self-validation; the need for Africans to celebrate their cultural assets without waiting for external approval. “We should promote what we have,” she said.

In their home studio, David begins playing the hand drum. He taps the taut animal skin cover of the drum, gradually increasing the intensity. The sound from the hollow instrument reverberates through the home, grabbing everyone’s attention.

“He is in his element,” said Edwards.

The children and the Green Pasture Kiddies (GPK) team

Imagine a room buzzing with curiosity. Children huddle around brightly coloured counting frames, their faces lit up in concentration as they tackle math problems with an ancient tool called the Abacus. This wasn’t your typical classroom; it was the NurtureOne Boot Camp, a transformative two-day experience held in Lagos, Nigeria, on Wednesday and Thursday, March, 27th and 28th, designed to spark a love of learning in 30 less privileged children.

The boot camp wasn’t just about numbers. It was a whirlwind of exploration, with themed corners catering to every interest. In the fashion design corner, young minds dreamt of becoming the next big designers, sketching clothes and learning from seasoned professionals. Budding audio engineers tinkered with knobs and sliders, learning the secrets of sound control and radio drama production.

Tolu Shodunke, the Founder of Green Pasture Kiddies & Nurture One

But the excitement didn’t stop there. Aspiring filmmakers and photographers honed their skills under the guidance of experienced professionals. They learned how to tell stories through pictures, mastering techniques like composition and lighting. From capturing compelling product visuals to exploring the magic of storytelling through photos, these children were empowered to unleash their inner creatives in the digital age.

The NurtureOne journey didn’t end at the boot camp. The grand finale unfolded at the NurtureOne Charity Event Banquet, a dazzling affair held at the Eko Club on Friday, March 29th. Here, 100 children, accompanied by their families and generous sponsors, gathered for a night to remember.

The opulent ambience was a stark contrast to the realities many of these children faced. Yet, for one magical evening, they were treated like royalty. They feasted on delicious food, their laughter echoing through the hall as they celebrated in the camaraderie and attention. Games and competitions filled the air with excitement, fostering a spirit of healthy competition and fun.

But the night wasn’t just about merriment. It was a poignant reminder of the challenges these children faced. Through heartfelt interviews, their stories were shared, amplifying the impact of NurtureOne’s mission and inspiring others to join the cause.

NurtureOne is on a mission to find sponsors for these bright young minds. The goal? To empower them with the resources and support they need to reach their full potential. From the children who tackled math problems with an abacus to those who discovered a passion for filmmaking, NurtureOne is committed to ensuring their dreams have a fighting chance.

This is more than just a charity event; it’s a story of hope, inspiration, and the unwavering belief that every child deserves a chance to shine.

Knorr Eativist Chef Fregz Shares Secrets to Healthier Nigerian Cooking https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/04/chef-fregz-knorr-eativist-interview/ Wed, 17 Apr 2024 14:23:07 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1653443 By Knorr

Meet Chef Gbubemi Fregene, popularly known as Chef Fregz, a maestro in the food world, whose exploits exceed the world of being a private chef and content creator now an Eativist, leading the charge for Knorr’s campaign to diversify diets with locally relevant plant-based foods.

In this exhilarating interview, Chef Fregz shares his passion for food, envisioning a future where he bonds over cooking with his kid, and, with the power vested in him as an ‘Eativist,’ declares his mission to revolutionize the Nigerian diet.

Get ready as he takes you on a tantalizing journey where he is not only a chef but a visionary who is shaping the future of food in conjunction with Knorr through the Eat for Good campaign.

What would you have been if you weren’t a chef, and why?

If I was not a Chef, I’d probably be an HR executive or doing something creative like being a writer for films.

HR because that was what I studied in school, and frankly I didn’t exactly hate it, and I had the opportunity at the time to start out at a good HR firm. For writing, I have a passion for words and how they move one, so why not harness it into money?

As a dad, are you looking forward to bonding with your kid over your love for cooking?

Oh Yes! One of my life-defining moments was cooking with my dad and how we made the special breakfast on Saturdays growing up. So, aside from recreating that memory, getting my children to cook with me would be the ultimate!

My son already likes to eat, but let me wait for him to be older so he can start blending the pepper mix for The Knorr Good Jollof! I imagine those would be moments when my children can feel safe and say anything to me and teach them things that would be valuable to them for life.

What’s the most expensive meal you’ve ever prepared?

The most expensive meal I have prepared would have to be a 13-course for a private client where I used A9 grade Wagyu Beef and Fresh White Truffle, and we made a seafood dish we served on iPads!

What can Nigerians add or remove from their diets to make them healthier, considering your stance as a Knorr Eativist?

The funny thing is the Nigerian ingredients are very rich and healthy. With our various leafy greens, organic yams, root vegetables, and a vast selection of legumes, pulses, and fruits, I find that the vast majority need to adjust their cooking techniques to keep the integrity of the ingredients.

A major example is that we overcook our greens! We need to reduce that or stop altogether. We want the nutrients to be as alive as possible, get them into our bodies and eat as much of those greens as possible.

We need to deep-fry and even shallow-fry less and opt for roasting with a bit more naturally occurring fats. Beyond fried rice, we should learn to incorporate vegetables as part of our eating experience and not see them as garnishes and what you eat when you are on a “diet”.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4 winnersKanekalon’s Activ8 Naija season 4 finale was nothing short of a glamorous, A-listed event, captivating audiences and leaving an indelible impression on all who attended. Held at the iconic Watercress Event Center, Lagos Nigeria, this year’s grand finale was the culmination of an exhilarating 8-week challenge that had everyone on the edge of their seats and glued to their screens.

Kanekalon’s Activ8 is a CSR initiative between its partners namely Xpression, Darling, and Mirron which focuses on discovering, developing, and empowering young female creatives and content creators through a series of intensive but very interesting weekly quests intended to juice out creativity and unravel hidden potentials among these bold women.

From the outset, it was clear that Activ8 Naija season 4 was going to be something special because it was the first time the organizers decided to focus on what is arguably now the fastest-growing hub for content creators – Nigeria. The competition, which assembled 50 interested and passionate selected ladies from the length and breadth of Nigeria, was unlike anything we’d seen before.

With every week’s challenges designed to push the contestants to their limits and updates, the Activ8 videos were a thriller to watch every week. From viral total makeovers to African-themed bridal looks, all the way to stories of impact and grand ball looks, each task unlocked a new level of the contestants’ creativity and ingenuity in new and exciting ways.

However, it was the grand finale that truly stole the show. With the top 5 finalists vying for the coveted title of Activ8 Queen, tensions were running high as the contestants prepared to showcase their final work to the hundreds of eager guests made up of partners of Kanekalon, friends, and families of the contestants, including well-wishers and fans. The “Belle of the Ball” challenge, in particular, was a sight to behold, with each finalist pushing the boundaries of hair fashion to create truly breathtaking looks.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4After a beautiful presentation of all 5 finale videos by the contestants who came up to answer questions posed by the sensational MC VoiceofSteph just before their video was previewed, Victoria Ogbu, popularly referred to as Vee in the competition emerged victorious in the end. Her outstanding video received loud cheers, a standing ovation from some members of the audience, and great remarks from the judges to earn her a spot above the others as Activ8 Queen.

She won 5000 USD cash for her personal use as well as to support her dreams, with the addition of products and gifts from all 3 partners of Kanekalon. Adewale Karimo known in the competition as Kahris emerged as the 1st runner-up walking home with 2000 USD and products from Kanekalon partners.

Narrowly securing her spot to complete the top trio was Jumbo Richard, stage named Telmsss, emerging as the 2nd runner-up with a cash win of 1000 USD and gifts and products from Darling, Xpression, and Mirron.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4The event itself was a feast for the senses, with dazzling hair shows, electrifying musical performances, and plenty of surprises along the way. The Marketing Executive of Kaneka and one of the project leads from the company, Laura Mills, who also gave the opening address for the event, was very elated about the turnout of events and did not hide her excitement about the choice of the winner as well as the success of Activ8.

She reiterated Kanekalon’s commitment to not just the beauty of women but also to their all-round development, and Activ8 is just one of the platforms to amplify this mission. She was grateful to all partners of the brand as well as Invictus Global for brilliantly managing this project and production. When Lade asked Ink Balogun, a pioneer in Nigeria’s digital media industry who has led Aso Ebi Bella (asoebibella.com) since 2017 and recently launched the indigenous 234 Games (234games.co): “As the leader of a successful online community, we know that you see a lot of GenZ and millennial women challenging traditional narratives of success. What are you seeing now in areas like entrepreneurship and social impact?”

She said:

I’m just really happy to celebrate Nigerian women, our resilience, our focus, and our determination are unmatched. We are top-tier! We set trends that the whole world follows and adopts eventually.

In the space of entrepreneurship, I see women of different ages find new outlets for creativity and that is really inspiring. I mean look at Veekee James, Hilda Baci, and I don’t even think they are 30… We have new voices coming out everyday.

Also for older people, if you feel your time has passed, that is not true, there is always time to reinvent the wheel and to pick up your inspiration. Nigerian women inspire me because we are setting the trend, we are the prototype!

When Clara Chizoba Kronborg, an award-winning media & social entrepreneur was asked to share some strategies she has used to overcome societal expectations and achieve success on her own terms seeing that she’s broken barriers in terms of media ownership, she said:

First of all, success is very subjective, it’s about being very authentic and as a Nigerian/African woman living in the diaspora, where you have to really own who you are 100% to be able to thrive and be able to have a strong voice and express yourself in the way that it should be.

How have I done that? It’s honestly by being myself and realising who I am: who is Clara? what’s your purpose, and what are you put on this earth to do? The moment I realised that, I knew that the only way for me to navigate that is to stay true to my person so that I don’t have to apologise when I walk into a room. I need you to see that this is me, this is all of me, and you’d take it as it comes.

The moment I embraced my personality, it made things a lot easier. I also leveraged networking to be honest and when you are authentic, people know when you are fake, people can see through your boo ha ha… Build a strong reliable network!

For the media work that I do, I’d honestly say it’s the team and the work they put in. I’ve been able to build a strong team who believe in my vision and I cannot thank them enough for it… Everything that I’ve built and leveraged so far I got from being true to myself, knowing who I am, and just holding fast to it.

When Joyce Jacob, a renowned Celebrity Makeup Artist with an eye for striking yet subtle makeup looks and the Director of Hair & Makeup for the 2nd season of Netflix‘s glamorous hit reality series YOUNG, FAMOUS & AFRICAN, was asked to share how she defines success for herself within the very diverse and saturated beauty industry, seeing that her career path highlights the need for artistic expression and career branding, she said:

For me, success is getting to the place where you are comfortable. When I say comfortable, I mean comfortable in your craft, comfortable in your talent, and comfortable in what you have to offer to the world…

Success is when you don’t have to work too hard. You know, I don’t have to bend over backwards; when I don’t have to do clickbait… You can actually just sit in your talent, sit in craft, and be confident that the bookings are going to keep rolling in; you’re going to stay booked and busy, and you’re going to keep achieving your dreams, for me that is success.

And also not getting carried away, cause in my industry it is so easy to get carried away. I started over 10 years ago, 2009 to be specific… and the industry has grown so beautifully. It’s been a beautiful thing to see and you can get carried away…

Part of my success has just been staying true to myself and it’s the #1 advice I will give to anyone starting a business… Just stay true to yourself, stay true to your signature, stay true to your craft, and I promise you, you will be successful.

Your work at Aso Ebi Bella celebrates African culture, how can we use entrepreneurship and digital platforms to define success beyond traditional stereotypical metrics and integrate cultural identity and social impact into our goals and why we should do these things?

Authenticity is where you find yourself, uniqueness is where you find yourself, not echoing other people’s voices but finding your own.

…GenZ and Gen Alpha you have the benefit of “being African” being cool now. We (Millenials) didn’t have that… and honestly we suffered from streotypes (a lot of misrepresentation) and it really took us defining what we want.

When it comes to women specifically, I love what we’ve done because things like fashion and even cooking have been looked down on. After all, women provide these services for free.

We provide them as part of our energy and giving beauty and light to the world; but us being able to say “No, take us seriously, this is a business, this ties into our identity, this says something, this makes money, this provides inspiration,” is so important.

We’ve even seen designers from international runways pick one or two inspirations from us, and it’s not like we need that validation but it shows that we have a unique authentic voice to bring.

So finding your voice, having the discipline to streamline it into a business and run a team around it, and staying true to yourself and improving your craft is really key… You also have to evolve while staying true to yourself.

I think it’s really important and I’m inspired by what I see going on currently.

— Nkechi (Ink) Balogun

What are some of the biggest stereotypes you’ve encountered as a successful African woman and how have you defined success for yourself in light of these expectations?

The biggest stereotype and I think most women can relate to this is “Oh she’s successful, someone is bankrolling her, someone is behind her, etc”. It’s just always someone else other than the person that’s truly behind the craft and that for me is the number one stereotype.

People don’t believe that it can be you all alone and I don’t know why this stereotype is always there but it’s disgusting and it’s false. You’d be surprised at how much you can achieve by yourself if you truly just put your mind to what you want to do.

You are enough and you should believe that you are enough! You don’t need to have anyone bankrolling or sponsoring you.

— Joyce Jacob

Your Guinness World Record attempt highlights the power of perseverance, what message do you have for young women facing challenges on their path to success? You’ve also moved from country to country and travelled to over 30 countries which is amazing, how has perseverance played a role in all of these things and your breaking the barriers to success?

It’s easy to tell someone to persevere, “you have to persevere and keep going”, but it’s easier said than done.

First of all the Guinness World Record attempt, I didn’t just wake up overnight and want attempt to break a record interviewing 94 people for 55 hours non stop. It was the most insane thing I’ve ever done in my life and it’s still ongoing and we hope to bring the news to life soon. However, perseverance is a big key… but it’s easier said than done.

If you want to achieve something, you just have to wake up and you go from it because no one is coming to save you. If you want to do it, you have an idea, you have a concept, go for it!

… How it works for me: I have an idea, I send an email out, and if I don’t get a response after 24 hours, I will be knocking at your door. Also if you say no to me, that’s okay. If you say go and restructure and come back, I will restructure and I will come back. That’s the way it is.

I don’t take no for an answer. If it doesn’t work for us, that is okay, I move on to the next person… and if you say no, I knock on another door. I keep trying again because I know one day, somebody will see the vision and say yes and that person becomes one of the team. I keep finding and looking for the person who sees the vision of where I am heading to.

There’s no perseverance without you putting action into it, it’s okay if it gets hard, cry if you have to but don’t stay down, pick up yourself and move forward. You need to find a way to get to the next level, if it takes calling the person that helps you feel the fire, call them… Build your step-by-step action and keep going.

— Clara Chizoba Kronborg

With two extraordinary seasons delivered to our screens, The Real Housewives Of Lagos (RHOLagos), has become synonymous with high fashion, because its casts always come correct.

They did not disappoint on the recently released S2 reunion episode which is now airing on Showmax, keeping the energy as vibrant as ever they donned first-class pieces from some of Nigeria’s leading Designers. Let’s take a look at their breathtaking outfits below:

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer in Anjy Luminee Couture

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer was on a mission to serve us an ethereal goddess vibe in her white + tan classic gown with nude illusion details by Anjy Luminee Couture, highlighting her softer side.

The fierce Melanin Magic RHOLagos cast was adorned in an elegant mermaid dress with pearls and feathers embellishments and some drapings. Mariam complemented her look with a statement feather headpiece by Urez Kulture, a stylish low bun and dangling diamond earrings.

Faith Morey in Amy Aghomi

Just as she had said on the show, you’ll either see Faith Morey with a crown or a train. The six-foot Amazon goddess attended the reunion in a red 3D floral dress with golden-brown infusions, quite like her beautiful skin.

Designed by Amy Aghomi, a Lagos-Warri-based fashion designer, the dress had an exaggerated floral collar which extended above her head into a remarkable bouquet of red flower stalks and featured Faith’s signature flowing train.

She complemented her look with a diamond-studded neckpiece and accompanying diamond studs from Boz Jewelry. Her feet were strapped in complementary red-heeled sandals, her hair was sleeked back from her face though with a pretty centre part and she rocked a soft sultry glam with the exceptional look.

Laura Ikeji in Medlin Couture

Laura Ikeji showed up looking stunning in a high-slit beaded ivory dress by Medlin Couture paired with gloves and a rosette-embellished cape.

Styled by Medlin Boss and Gabriel Anthony, the bubbly RHOLagos cast complimented her look with side bangs, diamond accessories from Saint Tracys and feathery heels.

Dr. Rommel in Sevon Dejana

Dr Rommel stepped out in his distinct flamboyant style sporting a custom crystal-beaded yellow ensemble by Sevon Dejana featuring Naija’s traditional top layered with a cape.

The outfit was accompanied by a custom cap, coral beads and a gold-detailed walking stick to complete the look

Nemsia Films, in strategic collaboration with Evercare Hospital Lekki, proudly announces a transformative collaboration aimed at amplifying awareness about asthma and providing essential support to patients through the provision of 100 complimentary inhalers.

This initiative follows the resounding success of the cinematic masterpiece ‘Breath of Life’ on Prime Naija, a film written and directed by BB Sasore, the co-founder of Nemsia Films, starring and produced by Eku Edewor which recently garnered eleven AMVCA nominations, including Best Movie, Best Director, and Best Writing, underscoring its remarkable impact on Nigerian cinema.

Founder Nemsia Films, Derin Adeyokunnu

Asthma remains a pervasive chronic respiratory ailment affecting millions globally, with Nigeria bearing one of the highest prevalence rates in Africa. Despite its widespread impact, there persists a dearth of awareness and accessibility to critical medications such as inhalers, indispensable for effectively managing asthma symptoms.

The symbiotic collaboration between Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki is poised to cast a beacon on these pertinent issues by fostering awareness about asthma and extending support to 100 underprivileged patients through the provision of complimentary inhalers. Through this concerted campaign, both entities aspire to empower asthma patients, enabling them to reclaim agency over their health and enhance their overall quality of life.

We are profoundly enthused to unite with Evercare Hospital Lekki in effecting tangible change in the lives of asthma patients across Nigeria,” remarked Derin Adeyokunnu, Co-founder of Nemsia Films.

The resonance of ‘Breath of Life,’ written and directed by BB Sasore, exemplifies the potent role of narrative in catalyzing awareness of critical health issues. Our association with Evercare Hospital Lekki reaffirms our steadfast commitment to advancing this noble cause.

A notable highlight of ‘Breath of Life’ was the character Elijah, portrayed by Chimezie Imo, whose heartfelt and humorous depiction of asthma punctuated the movie with moments of comedy, adding depth and relatability to the narrative.

As part of the initiative, Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki will orchestrate the distribution drive for 100 complimentary inhalers. These initiatives will be hosted at the hospital’s premises in Lekki, Lagos, with a deliberate focus on extending assistance to individuals facing financial constraints in accessing inhalers.

We are delighted to collaborate with Nemsia Films in spotlighting asthma awareness and extending support to underserved patients through the provision of complimentary inhalers, remarked Dr. Ayoola Shonibare Chief Medical Officer, Evercare Hospital Lekki.

Asthma demands diligent management. At Evercare Hospital Lekki, we remain committed to transforming healthcare and improving the well-being of the communities we serve by ensuring equitable access to essential care and medications, fostering the well-being of every asthma patient.

Chief Business Officer, Evercare Hospital Lekki; Kehinde Oyesiku

The synergistic partnership between Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki underscores the imperative of collective action in tackling public health imperatives. By amalgamating their respective resources and expertise, both entities exemplify their unwavering commitment to effectuating positive change in the fight against asthma in Nigeria.

The 3rd Annual International Woman Leadership Conference (TIWLC) concluded on a high note at the Intercontinental Hotel, Festival City, Dubai, marking another successful edition of this transformative event.

Organized by the Ibukun Awosika Leadership Academy with support from Dubai’s Economy and Tourism Centre, the conference served as a dynamic convergence of knowledge, empowerment, and entertainment for women of African heritage and beyond.

The conference kicked off with a welcome and networking cocktail. TIWLC convener Ibukun Awosika officially welcomed conference delegates from diverse backgrounds and regions across the UAE, Africa, Europe, North America and Australia, delivering a powerful message encapsulating the essence of the conference’s mission.

In her address, she emphasized the importance of learning, empowerment, and connectivity as three pillars of the conference.

“We need you to learn, we need you to be empowered, we need you to connect—the three pillars on which the conference is built,” said Awosika.

“One is knowledge, and you must ensure to leave the conference learning everything you can. The other is power, which is in your connectivity. Every woman has power, but her power is useless by itself. When you connect the power of all the women, we create the superpower of women, and we can use that superpower to support every woman who wants to go somewhere.” she added.

For three days, attendees were treated to an enriching experience featuring an impressive lineup of pan-African and global speakers who shared life-changing insights and leadership experiences.

Notable keynote speakers included former Vice President of South Africa and Chairman of Umlambo Foundation, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka; former Executive Director/CEO of Rwanda Development Board, Clare Akamanzi; independent consultant at Dolika Banda INC, Dolika Banda; and Sanusi Lamido (CON), Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and the 14th Emir of Kano.

Plenary sessions were led by esteemed global business leaders such as British Politician and former Minister for London, Rt Hon. Nick Hurd; Associate Partner with McKinsey & Company, Kemi Onabanjo-Joseph; GM & Group Head, Investor Relations & Corporate Development at Zenith Bank, Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani.

Also present was the Former Chair of the Board of Directors of Nokia Corporation, Risto Siilasmaa; former CEO of Uganda National Oil Company, Founder & Managing Director of TIG Africa, Josephine Wapakabulo; and Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination & Head, Central Delivery Coordination Unit, Presidency, Hadiza Bala Usman, among others.

Renowned global speaker, strategic leadership expert, minister, and author Sam Adeyemi anchored a leadership session titled “Leading with Courage for Effective Change,” while Board Member for ICT & Innovation at TradeMark Africa, Lola Aworanti-Ekugo and Risto Siilasmaa engaged in a fireside chat, further enriching the conference experience.

Now in its third year, the International Woman Leadership Conference (TIWLC) continues to empower and unite women across Africa and the diaspora, inspiring positive change on the continent. The event attracted about 500 attendees from various sectors and regions, building on the success of its inaugural edition held at Hilton Al Habtoor Dubai.

This week, Ibukun Awosika took to her Instagram to confirm the date for next year’s TIWLC Dubai – March 19th to March 21st, 2025. For more information about the International Woman Leadership Conference, visit their website or follow them on Instagram @theiwlc.

The invite-only event welcomed human resource experts and business leaders from various industries to engage in meaningful conversations on workplace culture, productivity and organization performance.

Themed Disruption: Navigating the New World of Work, the event outlined critical issues facing today’s world of work, especially amid the “Japa” wave in Nigeria. A keynote fireside chat featuring the MD/CEO of Pan African Towers, Azeez Amida, in conversation with Olusola, outlined the top issues today’s leaders are encountering while proffering solutions.

“If change is required in today’s workplace, then HR needs to be at the heart of the disruption,” said Lanre Olusola.

“I don’t want leaders to maintain the status quo. Very few people can pause, reflect, and take stock, so I decided I would help them,” he added, explaining why his organization continues to convene the HR Breakfast Dialogue for free. He also charged HR Leaders with driving change to create a more sustainable workforce and improve performance and business continuity.

Keynote speaker Azeez Amida delivered a riveting conversation, calling on HR leaders to adapt and change how they manage human capital. He noted that this transition will assist in maintaining productivity and an optimal level of interpersonal communication.

According to him,

“HR leaders have the crucial role of maintaining the balance between the employees and the organization. We must consciously build people’s skills irrespective of their experience and qualifications. For HR Leaders, understanding what you’re managing is more important than keeping the job.

“Human resources are not limited to keeping people happy but to making people love their jobs and keeping them productive. Building an excellent company culture is important—the environment you create for people determines how best they can perform,” he added.

British Vogue’s editorial leadership takes a historic step forward, passing from the groundbreaking tenure of Ghanaian Edward Enninful to the discerning eye of Chioma Nnadi of Nigerian descent.

Enninful, who shattered glass ceilings as the magazine’s first Black Editor-in-Chief, left a legacy of inclusivity and audacious style, paving the way for Chioma Nnadi to become the first black female Head, marking the dawn of a new era in fashion.

Nnadi, a fashion powerhouse, assumed the role with a unique perspective informed by her extensive years in fashion editorial. She joined Vogue in 2010 in New York and later worked running the American website of Vogue as well as writing for the magazine and co-hosting the Vogue podcast before taking up the reins last October as the Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue.

Resourceful and resilient: for me, those are the two words that truly underpin the brilliance of British style. Three decades later and, while much has changed in the 20 years I have been living in the US, London’s beautiful, creative, scrappy energy – one that just can’t be found or emulated anywhere else – remains undimmed.

And so, back on home turf with the new responsibility and supreme honour of taking up the mantle at British Vogue, I knew my first cover star needed to be someone who defined that inimitable spirit. Luckily for me, it was an easy choice.

FKA Twigs is an artist who represents the ideal of the modern British eccentric: she is a shape-shifter who rejects conformity and takes real joy in clothes. And as someone whose personal style was ignited by the clubbing scene, I was so inspired speaking with Twigs about her latest work and the always-alluring relationship between fashion and music.

She reminded me that it isn’t just about the runway – it exists and can be found in so many different places, be it at a rave or in our home lives.

FKA Twigs whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett is a British singer, songwriter, and dancer who became known as Twigs for the way her joints cracked.

She settled in Hackney in her early 20s becoming something of a local celebrity overnight when, in 2012, she was spotted by the photographer Matthew Stone at Hoxton Station the morning after a warehouse party. She got cast as an extra in a story for i-D. She’d end up on the magazine cover before she’d even signed to a record label.

I just want to be in touch with nature again though, that’s what it boils down to. I still feel so plugged into the culture. I want to rave, I want to make love, I want to meet people. But equally, I want to find peace.

Twigs speaking about her career, healing, love, her career, healing from abuse, her diagnosis, facing racism and the chaos of the real world.

According to the Vogue article, “as an artist, Twigs has always moved through the pop cultural universe at her own speed, often melding genres at opposite ends of the spectrum – opera with R&B, say – to form the contours of her singular sound. She’s stretched the boundaries of her physical body in every possible direction.

For her second album, Magdalene (2019), she mastered the ancient art of wushu sword fighting and ascended to the heavens on a stripper pole in the wildly popular video for “Cellophane”. Her approach to performance style has been just as mutable, defined only by her ability to shapeshift from one exquisitely dressed creature to the next.”

To be on Chioma’s cover is a huge honour… This is a real milestone.

In the era of fine dining, Glenfiddich takes guests on a gastronomic voyage where flavour meets finesse. The premium Single-Malt Whisky brand elevated the Grand Yozakura experience for guests by combining Japanese-inspired food with specially created cocktails in partnership with Chef Alex Stumpf and Professional Mixologist Robin Abrahamsson at RSVP in Lagos, Nigeria.

The evening unfolded into a rich tapestry of multi-sensory delights, echoing with laughter, animated conversations, and the delightful clinking of whisky glasses.

Enyinna Nwigwe, Glenfiddich Nigeria’s Brand Ambassador, guided the tasting session with whisky aficionados, discerning clientele, and friends of the brand.

With a velvety texture that dances on the palate, the whisky reveals an array of flavours—subtle ripe fruits, delicate florals, spices, and oak, all expertly captured in signature drinks like Champagne Cascade, Whiskey Wonderland, and Sweet Symphony. Complementing these libations was a delectable array of dishes, from tantalizing starters to decadent desserts.

The culinary artistry showcased by the esteemed Chef and Mixologist seamlessly blended classic Japanese nuances with modern twists, captivating palates with an array of mouthwatering creations.

This experience was born from our desire to celebrate Glenfiddich’s remarkable Scottish whisky legacy, spanning 137 years. The Grand Yozakura whisky embodies the craftsmanship and dedication that have defined Glenfiddich as one of the world’s premier distilleries. Every sip unveils unique flavors and tasting notes, designed to enthrall your senses, shared Enyinna Nwigwe, Glenfiddich Nigeria’s Brand Ambassador.

Since its introduction, Glenfiddich has become more than just a premium whisky; it is a symbol of mastery, collaboration, and the pursuit of excellence. The brand inspires whisky connoisseurs and enthusiasts to go out on a voyage of taste and exploration with every sip, where each experience is memorable and every moment is cherished.

Raising their glasses to this occasion, guests showed their profound appreciation for the art of whisky making and tasting, as well as the brand’s commitment to excellence!

As the water closes in over Susan Mtakai‘s head, she can’t help thinking about how the depths she’s about to descend to are so very alien to the life she was once used to. Born in the highlands of Taita, a county inland from the coast, her early experiences were of a landscape of hills and verdant forest. Growing up far from the sea was hardly what one would expect of someone who was to become a professional diver.

Yet, in the deep waters of the Indian Ocean, Susan Mtakai is a calm and considerate team leader. Donning a well-worn dive suit that bears traces of countless missions, her eyes show focus and confidence; the underwater world is now a familiar space for the rescue diver.

On this day, Mtakai and her colleagues are on a mission to retrieve the body of a young girl who drowned while swimming. As she guides her team down under the surface of the heaving sea, she ensures that her crew understand the importance of their mission.

“When we get the call for retrieval operations, the first thing I do is prepare my squad. We must plan cautiously because it is risky. We must have all of our equipment ready to ensure that the task runs successfully,” the 35-year-old explained after the mission.

Mtakai’s maritime story began in 2011 when she travelled to the busy Kenyan seaside for the first time. She discovered a love of the water, of the sounds of the crashing waves and the mews of seagulls. A connection with the environment, which had led her to become a park ranger, now had an entirely new focus.

“When I moved to the coast, I began as a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger in Mombasa Marine Park. This is after numerous training in the field and school. I mostly assisted in the preservation of marine ecosystems and other aspects of marine conservation. I had never been in the ocean before, in fact, I didn’t even know how to swim,” Mtakai said.

She spent nine years focusing on marine conservation, safety, and education. In the process, she discovered the fascinating world beneath the waves.

“One ordinary day, as we patrolled the beach to ensure the ocean was clean, an unexpected challenge threw us into an unprepared rescue mission. There was a boat and the occupants were in distress. Without much knowledge on search and rescue, we found ourselves in a tricky situation, forced to rely on our basic knowledge.”

Intrigued and eager to learn more, Mtakai took up diving. With the encouragement of her friends, she went through vigorous training, first mastering open water diving and then taking specialised courses. Her newfound skill set opened the door to a completely new world – both physically and metaphorically – pushing her from her familiar duty as a land-based ranger to the thrilling depths of the ocean.

In 2020 she was seconded to the Kenya Coast Guard Service. This allowed her to fully immerse herself in her love for diving and demonstrate her skills beneath the seas. But here she encountered another challenge: she had her work cut out to regularly prove her capacity as a woman in a tough environment.

“There were very few people, especially women in the Coast Guard service, especially free diving,” she explained.

Beyond the difficulties of working in an understaffed and underskilled service, Mtakai also ensures that she and her team are properly equipped with well-serviced scuba diving gear.

“I use fins for smoother movement and a weight belt to control my buoyancy. A diving mask is essential for great underwater vision, and a waterproof watch allows me to precisely track time. For safety and better visibility, I also carry flashlights and use distinct safety markings.”

After retrieving the body during the current mission, Mtakai and her crew handle the remains with utmost care and respect. Once back on the surface, they undergo a comprehensive debriefing to ensure all team members get the emotional support they need. They then hand over the body to the authorities.

“We work with authorities to facilitate the appropriate procedures for the proper documentation and handover of the deceased to their families. This is where our work ends as search and rescue.”

While search and rescue may be one of her toughest tasks, Mtakai wears multiple hats within the Kenya Coast Guard Service. She also oversees fishing safety training programs and her team management experience has been called on to help build a culture of safety and professionalism in the service.

Perhaps more importantly, Mtakai is also a leader determined to break down old boundaries and has become a strong champion of the marine sector as an open and inviting environment for women. That has offered opportunities to more women wishing to join the Coast Guard.

“I’ve been here for nine years. When I started, only five women were working with us. I joined them, and now we have 15 women in different departments, even in management,” said Beatrice Jeroop, a corporal with the Kenya Wildlife Service.

Millicent Omido, an engineer by profession and a senior sergeant in the service, is responsible for the service’s boats. Having risen through the ranks, the growing opportunity for women has meant her experience translated into a senior role. She ensures all vessels for diving and other duties at the Kenyan Coast Guard Service are well maintained and serviced.

“I’ve spent 16 years in the marine industry, and it’s seen some incredible changes. You know, it’s normally where the men take command. So, seeing women making a great influence here now is like reaching a huge milestone,” Omido said.

“Having women in the maritime industry is quite crucial. They provide a variety of abilities and viewpoints to the team. It’s not just about breaking norms; it’s about ensuring that we have a diverse and motivated team to protect our oceans,” said John Wanyoike, Director of Enforcement and Emergency Response at the Kenyan Coast Guard Service.

Mtakai’s work also sees her engage with other emergency services, government agencies and the local community. Purity Amondi and Lynet Kerubu are two members of the community who now take tourists diving, thanks to Mtakai.

“Susan has made a difference for women here. She has made us believe that we can do this job just as well as anyone. Because of her, more women feel they can join us and make a difference in the marine sector,” Kerubu said.

While Mtakai’s work and community engagement paint a picture of perseverance, determination, and a strong commitment to saving lives and improving maritime safety, there is also an additional element to her work in the ocean.

“When we go diving and I see the corals flourishing and the ocean clean, it makes me happy. It feels like our own little world,” Mtakai said, her face beaming as she explained the constant delight of discovering the beauty of the underwater world, even after all this time.

“I aim to protect and celebrate this watery realm. We are working to preserve its beauty for future generations and women like me,” Mtakai concluded.

Mtakai makes waves on land too – her work was recognised through the National Heroes Council, with a National Hero award.

African fashion is rapidly attracting global attention, and Guzangs is at the forefront of this movement. With years of experience in showcasing the stories of African fashion designers worldwide, the brand has now expanded its reach to Nigeria.

This strategic move aims to identify top fashion talents in the country and launch its ambitious plan of establishing personalized connections with fashion designers across the continent. This initiative is encapsulated in the unique event titled “The Guzangs Experience,” promising a one-of-a-kind platform for collaboration and celebration within the African fashion industry.

African fashion embodies the spirit of passion, resilience, and vibrancy that is synonymous with Africa. It intricately weaves these elements into every fabric, creating styles that stand out, especially on the international stage. Guzangs has evolved into a vibrant hub for fashion talents to showcase their pieces, garnering essential exposure for life-changing opportunities.

The brand has strategically positioned itself not only to support African fashion creatives but also to embrace social media influencers, photographers, videographers, and other creatives across the continent. This holistic approach fosters a collaborative and dynamic ecosystem within the African fashion industry.

On Thursday, March 14, 2024, the city of Lagos witnessed a gathering of Nigeria’s leading fashion designers, stylists, influencers, actors, musicians, and various other individuals in the arts. They convened to discuss the timely emergence of the concept behind Guzangs, recognizing its significance and impact on the fashion industry.

Idelle Taye, the founder of Guzangs, passionately expressed the remarkable progress that African fashion has achieved over the years and emphasized the importance of sharing this progress with the world. She highlighted the diversity within African fashion, noting that it extends far beyond iconic styles like Ankara and Danshiki, and underscored the significance of showcasing this diversity through a platform that celebrates it.

Taye also discussed the readiness of African fashion to take a leading role in global fashion trends, stating, “I see African fashion designers being stakeholders, having a seat at the table.” This reflects her belief in the potential of African designers to contribute significantly to the global fashion landscape.

The event commenced with a warm welcome message from Maliz Mahop, an advocate for the African creative industry, who introduced the Guzangs brand to the esteemed guests. She highlighted the brand’s remarkable achievements within just three years of existence, showcasing renowned names such as Afrokrema, Muyishime, Margaux Wong, and Ugo Monye, among others. Their designs were displayed on a global stage, earning well-deserved global recognition.

Reflecting on the potential of African fashion to secure a prominent position on the world stage, Sara Sozzani Maino, a renowned fashion advocate based in Europe and the creative director of Fondazzione Sozzani and CNCC (Conde Nast Commercial Creative), as well as an Advisory Board Member of the Circular Fashion Summit (a United Nations SDG project), emphasized the importance of African designers boldly showcasing their craftsmanship on the international stage. She stressed that creating fashion is not just about making clothes but also about conveying messages and driving changes.

For a continent as culturally rich and steeped in traditions as Africa, Sozzani Maino believes that designers from this region should have a strong motivation to showcase their culture and creativity on a global scale. This sentiment reflects the potential impact African fashion can have in influencing global fashion trends while celebrating its unique heritage and craftsmanship.

Amina Isa, Founder of Koy and Victoria’s and Lala’s Lagos, delved deeper into this heritage by highlighting the richness and diversity of African fashion, noting that it extends beyond mere clothing. She described African fashion as the most diverse, interesting, and beautiful type of fashion globally.

Isa expressed the need to continue the momentum in showcasing African fashion, believing that it is on a trajectory towards great success and recognition worldwide.

In fostering the mass appeal of African fashion domestically, Daniel Etim-Effiong emphasized the importance of making African fashion accessible to the Nigerian market while ensuring its sophistication for global appeal. He likened this approach to the “Pure Water” model, where he said,

“Fashion, the way we learned from the global scene is perceived to be very sophisticated but maybe what African fashion designers need to learn is how to break it down, bringing it closer to the people.”

Imanse, a Nigerian artist, emphasized the importance of improved collaborations among creatives to showcase the power of black heritage more effectively. She believes that designers should be open-minded and offer opportunities to committed, professional, and hardworking fashion designers, as this could lead to groundbreaking success.

Deyemi Okanlawon, actor and producer of the latest blockbuster “All is Fair in Love,” validated this notion by sharing his understanding of the fusion of fashion and movie production. He recounted how he was inspired by Hollywood sensation Tom Ford’s style in a movie, leading him to integrate fashion into his film projects.

When working on “All is Fair in Love” in 2023, Okanlawon collaborated with Ayodeji Ayodele to costume his cast, highlighting the seamless collaboration that didn’t strain their budgets.

He emphasized the importance of such collaborations in creating better opportunities for the industry on a global scale. Other creative industry cremes de la creme in attendance included Eso Dike, Enyinna Nwige, Ijeoma Balogun, and Nkechi Balogun.

Fashion in Africa demonstrates its ability to extend beyond its boundaries, encompassing multiple industries within and beyond the creative realm. In concluding the event, Idelle Taye expressed her strong belief in the potential of African Fashion on the international scene, saying,

“African Fashion is a gem that needs to be nurtured. As we work hard at Guzangs to rediscover the craft and heritage of Fashion in the continent, we will continue to see increased global visibility and exponential financial growth for African fashion creatives.”

Guzangs, therefore, presents itself as a viable channel of discovery through which fashion enthusiasts from across the globe can take a bird’ s-eye view of the continent and marvel in awe at the array of fashion discoveries resident within the continent of Africa.

Lagos is a first step towards other African city tours for Guzangs. Discover the best of fashion Africa has to offer, visit their website to get started.
