British Nigerian actor, Damson Idris shines as the star of Essence Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Of The Moment’ issue. Described as “confident, with a charisma that reminds you of the Old Hollywood greats he speaks of with admiration,” Damson graces the cover with his aura.

The American monthly lifestyle magazine goes on to paint a picture of Damson’s’ undeniable presence: “The Foundation of a man. He stands 6’1, with deep auburn skin and a 4K pearly smile that glistens like ultraviolet rays off charcoal mines in the deepest sands off the coast of Nigeria. Yes, it’s that deep. His charm is tangible. His infectiousness is palatable. His future is limitless.”

For the Essence ‘Sexiest Man Of The Moment’ May/June issue, the London-born and bred actor opens up about fatherhood, his love for his mother, Black women, staying humble, and the exciting top-secret project he’s working on after “Snowball.”

He also discusses his views on beauty, fashion, and the lessons he’s learned about protecting his privacy.

See excerpts from the interview:

On the relationship with his mother and his love for black women

“My mother’s name is Silifat Abike Idris,” the actor says. “She is my hero, my best friend, my guru. Something she always reminds me about is to be humble, however high I climb.”

“My mother is a Black woman, and that love stays with me. I feel protected by Black women. I feel loved by Black women. I feel at home.”

On his future fatherhood ambitions

“Oh, man, I’ll be the best dad. It doesn’t matter what age I’ll be, I’ll still be the cool dad. Like, yeah, My dad’s coming to pick me up from school. I’ll just love it, you know? I love kids. Being an uncle is amazing, because I get to take the baby and then give it back—but I can’t wait to be a father and have a big family.”

On how he feels like he is one of Essence’s sexist men of the moment

“I have no idea! [laughs] But I’m beautiful. I didn’t mean that.

“If I wasn’t me, I’d be like, Oh, that guy cares. That guy cares about what he’s doing, aside from aesthetics or whatever. I think if you care about what you do, that’s sexy—and that’s inspiring. So, yeah, maybe that’s why I’m sitting here in this chair.”

When it comes to April 1st, what comes to your mind? Pranks, right? This annual tradition, observed on April 1st, is about playful deception. Often, the jokesters unleash their creativity with practical jokes, momentarily fooling their audience before revealing the truth and shouting ‘April Fools!

All around the world, the day is being celebrated as a day for playing harmless pranks on your neighbour or family members and it is associated with laughter.

A good April Fools’ trick requires some imagination and lots of creativity too. Check out some well-executed ones that had us laughing, along with the responses to them:

Comedian Ali Baba fooled many with a post claiming he and his wife, Mary, welcomed a set of triplets two months ago. “Mary and I are happy and overjoyed to welcome our 3 sons, Aaron, Alexander, and Andrew, into the Akpobome family. It’s been 2 months since they arrived, and as the days go by, we thank God Almighty for these 3 beautiful blessings. We also want to thank our sisters, brothers, friends, uncles, and aunties for all the support so far.”

Many comments showed people congratulating him and Mary, and even wishing the triplets well, with replies from him affirming their wishes and prayers. But Alex Ekubo was quick to decode that it was an April Fools prank.

The chess master, Tunde Onakoya, sent many people on X (Twitter) into a frenzy when he declared receiving a million-dollar donation from Wall Street. He is currently in New York, so it didn’t come as a surprise when he made the joke.

But then he had to pull a “Dele Momodu” as requests for donations started flooding his DMs.

Comedian Woli Arole had fans congratulating him on his newly purchased G-Wagon and some even “tapping” into his blessings

If you thought that the ‘UG‘ in JustinUg’s name indicates that he’s from Uganda, we are sorry to inform you that he just pulled one over on you. While UG is certainly part of his name, there’s no Ugandan connection. The multi-talented artist, content creator, actor, and aspiring DJ is named Justin Chukwudi Ugonna and hails from the eastern part of Nigeria.

There’s a saying that when someone does exceedingly well, they deserve their praise. Tobi Amusan has a heart full of champion’s spirit and has done exceedingly well. Over and over again, she has proved that she is not just a runner who runs swiftly, but who breaks records – even her own – and scoops medals. We call her the golden girl of 100m hurdles.

Here’s a rundown of her world championships so far:

At just 18, Tobi Amusan announced her arrival on the athletics scene with a double gold medal performance in 2015. She dominated the 100m hurdles at both the African Junior Athletics Championships in Ethiopia and the African Games in the Republic of Congo.

In 2018, Tobi made history as the first Nigerian to win gold in the Commonwealth Games in 100m hurdles at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. She also won a bronze model in the 4x 100m relay with her teammates, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Blessing Okagbare and Rosemary Chukwuma.

Later in the same year, she won her first African Championship at the 2018 Asaba African Championship and a gold medal in the 4 × 100m relay.

In 2019, at her second African Games in Rabat, Morocco, Tobi blazed over the hurdles to win a gold medal in a record of 12.68 seconds.

In the same year, at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, Qatar, Tobi set a personal best in the 100m hurdles heats and semis but finished fourth in the final.

In 2021, she broke a 23-year-old African record by Glory Alozie, clocking 12.42 seconds to become the first Nigerian Diamond League champion at the Zurich Diamond League. This historic feat earned her the coveted diamond trophy and $30,000.00.

In June 2022, Tobi Amusan solidified her reign as the African 100m hurdles champion, retaining her title at the 22nd African Championships in Mauritius with a time of 12.57 seconds. She didn’t stop there, she added another gold in a victorious 4 × 100m relay.

In the same month, she proved her dominance with an amazing top-tier finish, clocking 12.41 seconds at the 2022 Wanda Diamond League in Paris.

The same year in July, in Oregon, Tobi broke the 100m hurdles world record in the World Championships semifinals, becoming Nigeria’s first world record holder in athletics. Though she didn’t claim the legal record in the final, she secured her first World Championship title.

Still, in July, she won the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Stockholm Diamond League, with an impressive time of 12.52 seconds.

In August, Tobi dominated the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, defending her 100m hurdles title and setting a new record of 12.30 seconds. She also helped the Nigeria team win gold at the women’s 4 × 100 m relay.

In September, she set a new record as the first Nigerian to win the Diamond League title in 12.29 seconds at the Zürich Diamond League final event. What a perfect way to wrap up the year.

2023 was the year that tested Tobi. She started the season strong with 12.34 seconds in the 100m Hurdles at the Silesia Diamond League Meet on July 12. However, she faced a hurdle with a temporary anti-doping suspension, later cleared by the Disciplinary Tribunal.

2024 so far…

On January 5th, Tobi broke the African women’s indoor record in the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston and in February, she won the women’s 60mH at the Meeting Lievin in France clocking in at 7.77 seconds.

At the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana, Tobi won a gold medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles finals. This is Tobi’s third consecutive 100m hurdles gold medal at the African Games. She also won gold in the women’s 4 ×100m relays final.

Nigerian chess master, coach, and founder of “Chess in Slums” Tunde Onakoya has announced that the organisation has signed a three-year grant deal with global airline company Lufthansa.

The deal, according to Tunde Onakoya, will facilitate the development of a chess academy and STEM innovation lab in Lagos, Nigeria, that will be open and free to street children without access to education.

Tunde made the reveal on his official Instagram page. He said;

“Happy to announce that we @chessinslums just signed a three-year grant deal with @lufthansa airlines Global help alliance to build a Chess academy and STEM innovation Lab in Lagos Nigeria.

This learning hub will be open and free to street children without access to education.

This is a dream come true for all of us❤. 5th slide, I remember tweeting almost on this exact day two years ago that my dream was to build the biggest chess academy in the world that could become a safe learning haven for children from poverty without access to education to learn relevant skills for the future of work. A place where we could nurture our best minds and set them on a path to changing the world with their ideas. I didn’t know how it was going to come to fruition then, but I believe this partnership is the beginning of something beautiful. This is a project for all of us, so please send me an email here: tunde@chessinslumsafrica.com if you’d like to support or fund this dream.”

Women continue to make giant strides in football with their inclusion in decision-making in Africa and around the world. Women are being seen regularly not only in boardrooms and dressing rooms but also on the pitch. Six women referees taking to pitches at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast will be building on a growing legacy for young women around the world.

With the introduction of the first African woman referee at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2021 and three more women referees at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the expansion of women into football decision-making continues in Ivory Coast where a total of six women are officiating at the 2023 AFCON tournament.

The six are among 68 match officials appointed for the delayed 2023 tournament, each of whom brings a wealth of experience. This marks a significant milestone almost unthinkable just five years ago.

So, who are the six female referees officiating at the AFCON 2023?

Salima Mukansanga

Rwanda’s Salima Mukansanga broke the glass ceiling when she made history by becoming the first female referee to officiate an AFCON men’s game, at the 2021 AFCON tournament in Cameroon.

Her impressive performance would see her make history again when she was selected among three women officiating at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, a first for the global tournament.

A trained nurse, the 35-year-old will return to AFCON armed with more skills, having also officiated at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia, which was her second straight assignment at that event, following her debut in France in 2019.

“It means you have a lot you are carrying on your shoulders. The rest will say ‘oh wow! Now the door is open, we can go through.’ It means you are opening the door to other women,” she told the BBC after her selection.

Mukansanga, who has also officiated at the Olympics and the CAF Women’s Champions League, is highly respected among fans, who cannot wait to see her in the Ivory Coast.

“We watched her performance in Cameroon two years ago and she was impressive. She is a no-nonsense referee and that is the character you want from match officials,” said Ahmed Diakite, a Mali fan.

Akhona Makalima

South African Akhona Makalima has seen her star continue to rise in the last two years and is set to make her debut at the AFCON.

Makalima was thrust into the global spotlight when she made her maiden Women’s World Cup appearance last July 22, serving as the Fourth Official when Denmark took on China at the Perth Stadium in Australia.

The 36-year-old has been officiating since 2014 with her international assignments including the CAF Champions League and the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Makalima is highly respected in South Africa where is known for her no-nonsense approach to her work in the Premier Soccer League.

“We are happy that we have one of our own at the tournament,” Bongani Zulu, a South Africa fan shares. “We will not just be watching Bafana Bafana but also monitor her performance and we are sure she will perform well. At the World Cup last year, she did well which is great marketing for Africa and women’s football.”

Bouchra Karboubi

Morocco’s Bouchra Karboubi is another debutant at the 2023 AFCON and the only woman selected to officiate in the final rounds of the competition. Karboubi is a trailblazer whose career is filled with ‘firsts.’

She became the first Arab referee to officiate at the Women’s World Cup last year when she took charge of the match between defending champions, the United States of America and Vietnam at Eden Park in Auckland, New Zealand.

In 2022, the police inspector became the first female referee to officiate the final match of Morocco’s Throne Cup, having set a personal milestone two years earlier, when she became the first female referee to oversee a match in Morocco’s top-tier professional football league, the Botola Pro 1.

Diana Chikotesha

Zambian Diana Chikotesha is taking over her first assignment in a men’s game but she has also enjoyed a meteoric rise.

‘Super Diana’ as she is commonly known in Zambia, served as an assistant referee at the 2023 Women’s World Cup and she will be at the centre of attention in the Ivory Coast again.

Chikotesha, who started her career as a match official in 2014, saw her star shine bright in 2022 when she took charge of the CAF Women’s Champions League, FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup and Africa Women’s Nations Cup.

Rivet Maria Pakuita Cinquela

Video Assistant Referees (VAR) have become the subject of discussion ever since the technology was introduced due to their somewhat controversial decisions and in the Ivory Coast, Rivet Maria Pakuita Cinquela from Mauritius is one of them.

This is not her first assignment in the men’s game after being in charge of VAR in CAF Champions League matches such as the tie between Morocco’s Wyad Casablanca and Enyimba of Nigeria.

She brings a wealth of experience after also serving as the Fourth Official at the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and VAR at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Carine Atezambong

Cameroon’s Carine Atezambong will also work as an assistant referee in what will be her debut AFCON tournament.

She had her big break last year when she worked on the 2022/23 CAF Champions League final between Morocco’s Wydad AC and Al Ahly of Egypt. She also worked as a video assistant referee (VAR) during the 2023 U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Algeria, including the final.

She was also picked to officiate at the 2023 U17 World Cup in Indonesia.

It is quite uncommon in our world to combine the corporate world with a pop-culture lifestyle. For instance, it is quite hard to witness a bank manager who doubles as an artist. Most people quit one to pursue the other. But the case is different for Georgia Akuwudike.

Georgia is the Director of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Operations for Amazon UK and also an ‘Executive DJ’, as she dubs herself. Georgia, during the day, would be found in the corporate world mode, making calls and aligning business files, and at night, she would take over the controls and gears to mix music at parties. They often say you can’t be a professional and be an “outsider,” but that’s not for Georgia. She is a professional outsider who has won many awards, including the Best Female Chartered Accountant award from ICAN in 2013, the UK Everywoman in Logistics ‘Above and Beyond’ Award in 2019, and the African Achievers Diaspora Impact Award in 2022.

In this exclusive interview, Georgia Akuwudike shares how she combines the two worlds. Enjoy.

How are you doing today?

I am doing well, thank you. I feel even better today for having this conversation with you. Thank you for the spotlight.

Happy to have you. How was 2023 for you?

2023 was an incredible year for me because I achieved numerous significant milestones. Firstly, I was promoted to Director of Operations at Amazon, marking a moment of validation and appreciation for my hard work, commitment, and dedication to the business. I also ventured into the world of DJing, officially launching my career as a DJ in January 2023. This allowed me to share my passion for music with the world and create unforgettable experiences for audiences. Testing my physical and mental limits, I dedicated myself to intense training and participation in a live boxing competition in support of cancer research, as I had lost a loved one to cancer. That gruelling journey taught me valuable lessons on resilience and discipline. I launched Raising Giants, a community focused on nurturing the next generation of African female giants, following the values of Proverbs 31. As I continued to grow deeper spiritually, I also explored new skills and became a sound engineer apprentice in my church. I had my first external public speaking gig with over 1500 in-person participants, and I became a career coach. Lastly, I started writing my memoir, titled “Battle Scars, Bragging Rights.” This reflective process allows me to capture the transformative moments of my life and share my journey with others.

However, it is important to acknowledge that 2023 was not without its challenges. I experienced intense stress throughout the year, and I also went through the emotional rollercoaster of falling in and out of love. Despite these ups and downs, the year was ultimately fulfilling, and I attribute my successes and blessings to God. I give Him all the glory for the incredible opportunities that came my way and for the strength to balance them all.

What a wonderful year you had. What is 2024 looking like for you?

2024 holds immense excitement as I prepare to leave behind my eight-year stay in the UK and return to my motherland, Africa. This upcoming journey is set to make history as I take on the role of Director of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Operations for Amazon, spearheading their e-commerce operations in the region, starting with South Africa. It signifies a whole new chapter in my life, and I am thrilled by the endless possibilities it holds. Working alongside an incredible team, I eagerly anticipate the challenges that come with conducting large-scale business in SSA. Together, we will navigate uncharted territories and overcome obstacles, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s growth and development. Immersing myself in the rich South African culture is another aspect that fills me with anticipation. Furthermore, I have plans to visit a minimum of 6 to 10 African countries each year, and this will not only provide leisure and adventure but also grant me a deep understanding of the varying nations and their unique identities.

For DJ PIP, South Africa’s vibrant music scene offers an exciting platform for me to continue to pursue this interest, and I’m anxious to see if I can break into the market and succeed in it. As I embark on this new chapter in 2024, I’ll eagerly embrace the challenges, seize every opportunity, and follow my passions. The journey promises growth, adventure, and perhaps fulfilment.

You’ve crushed it at KPMG, PWC, and now Amazon. What are the key ingredients to your professional success?

My career journey started as an assistant accountant at a tech start-up called Seamfix in 2011. I had to balance my work and writing my professional ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) exams, which was a tough challenge. So, to be honest, one of my top ingredients to success is the fierce work ethic I picked up in the early days out of necessity, and in the words of a colleague, I have ‘‘ridiculously high standards’’ that ensure I consistently add value and accomplish whatever task is assigned to me to the best quality. Grit and resilience are traits that have also helped me bounce back from failures, ensuring that I swiftly apply my learnings and move on. Knowing my purpose is another driver that keeps me motivated in tough times. Effective stakeholder management is also a skill that is crucial for success. Preparation should never be underestimated, as regardless of my expertise, I always ensure to learn, get better, and test myself in preparation for the next level. I also recently learned about the 5Cs (competence, confidence, communication skills, consistency, and compass) model from Indra Nooyi, and I agree that they are indeed key ingredients to success.

In all, I attribute my journey to the grace of God, as His favour has played an integral role in my story.

Did you face any challenges navigating different cultures and workplaces as a Nigerian in the diaspora? How did you overcome them?

One of the biggest obstacles I faced was the intersectionality of being a minority within a minority. Working in a male-dominated industry and being a woman of colour presented its own set of unique challenges. When I first relocated in 2016, I experienced a culture shock and struggled to adapt to the new environment and cultural dynamics at play. I felt like I didn’t quite fit in and couldn’t find anyone who looked like me in my field. This led to imposter syndrome, where I doubted my capabilities and felt like I didn’t deserve to be where I was. To combat these feelings, I felt compelled to work three times as hard to prove myself, which only resulted in burnout. I also faced instances of racism, encountered failures, and felt isolated without anyone to confide in who truly understood my experiences.

To overcome these challenges, I had to learn how to adapt my communication style and expectations to align with the norms and values of the new culture. I embraced cultural diversity by making a conscious effort to learn about the culture and traditions, and this helped me gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the differences, allowing me to navigate the workplace more effectively. I also had to step out of my comfort zone to build relationships and connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to establish a supportive network. Lastly, and very importantly, I had to seek mentorship, as learning from someone who had experience navigating similar challenges was invaluable.

Based on my experiences, my advice to others on similar journeys is: Be patient and give yourself time to adjust. Seek support from fellow expatriates or locals who can provide guidance and advice based on their own experiences. Actively engage in cultural exchange. Be curious, get better, ask questions, and show a genuine interest in learning. Most importantly, stay true to your values and maintain a strong sense of self.

You’re a DJ and also work in the corporate world. How did you find the balance between such seemingly different passions?

In the words of Omawunmi, ‘‘Music heals your body, heals your spirit, and makes you whole, so get in the music.’’ In my happy or sad moments, music has always been my safe space. Ironically, I can’t sing to save my life, but I do love listening to music, and I’m a fire dancer. It pains me when I attend events and witness DJs with poor transitions that kill the vibe. I often thought to myself that I could do a better job. However, with my busy schedule, I just never had the time to explore that thought deeper. But in 2022, I switched roles, had a bit of a breather on my schedule, and seized the opportunity to enrol in a DJ school, and I fell in love with the craft. After graduating from beginner to professional courses within three months, I made the bold decision to move from the practice studio to the dance floor. I reached out to club managers on Instagram, offering my services initially for free. Through perseverance and learning from my initial failures, I gained confidence and landed my first two gigs in December 2022. The journey was not without its challenges, but with each practice and performance, I grew and improved. Creating a viral launch video from my third gig propelled me into a career that has exceeded my wildest dreams. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of performing at over 50 events, including weddings, festivals, carnivals, corporate events, and private parties, and every Saturday night, I am honoured to DJ at one of Manchester’s most popular Afrobeats clubs, Roots.

Honestly, balancing my DJ residency with my demanding Amazon job is a challenge. To prevent burnout or compromised performance in either world, I limit the number of DJ gigs during busy Amazon peak seasons. Despite the professional challenges, stepping onto the stage on Saturdays and bringing joy to people fuels a fire within me that I treasure. It doesn’t hurt that I get to have multiple streams of income while doing something I love, and we all know that in our world today, multiple income streams are necessary.

“Executive DJ-PIP”— I love the name! How did you land on it, and how does it represent your unique blend of corporate and creative pursuits?

My DJ journey began when I became an executive at Amazon, and while I’ve started this journey playing at clubs and parties, my ultimate goal is to become a corporate DJ with a touch of weddings. To reflect this, I carefully chose the name “The Executive DJ” for my brand. It was a deliberate decision to wear a suit for my first gig, and it quickly became a defining element of my brand. For PIP, the phrase “Primus Inter Pares” (PIP), which translates to “first among equals” in Latin, has always resonated with my life. I consistently ranked among the top three students throughout my primary and secondary education. I graduated as the Best Graduating Student in both my B.Sc. (Accounting) and M.Sc. (Finance). I was also the highest-performing female in my ICAN exams. Even after relocating to the UK, I continued to receive awards in my industry that recognised my excellence. So, when it came time to choose a DJ name, PIP was an obvious choice for me. However, some people jokingly tease me and suggest that it stands for “Performance Improvement Plan.” While I can laugh along with them, I am proud of what PIP truly represents in my life—a symbol of being the best among equals.

Woah, you’re indeed an executive in DJing. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about being a DJ?

I was surprised by the high cost of DJ equipment, which exceeded my budget. My friend jokingly termed it for me an ‘expensive hobby’. Moving forward, I urge whoever it may concern to stop underpaying DJs, especially when they have to bring their equipment.

You came to Nigeria in December. Did you get to do anything fun?

Oh yes! It was a fun month indeed, as it has been a while since I spent an extended period in the country. Apart from spending quality time with friends and family, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the DJ scene, and what I can say is that there are some extremely talented DJs in the country; we have an abundance of skills. Through the help of my promo video and network, I secured 10 DJ gigs across various events, including corporate functions, private birthday parties, festivals, renowned clubs such as The Library, 345, Silk, and even a beach event, all within Port-Harcourt, Abuja, and Lagos. It was a challenging and tiring experience, but it pushed my limits and provided premium enjoyment. LOL!

Can you tell us about “Raising Giants” and how it empowers young girls? What motivates you to give back to the community?

As someone who has been blessed with undeserved favour, I have always found it easy to give back and be generous. In 2020, I had a revelation from God about my purpose on earth, which led me to create my brand statement: “I want to be known for my drive, passion, faith, and excellence, and use that to inspire the next generation of women.” This revelation gave birth to Raising Giants, a cause that is very close to my heart and aims at empowering and inspiring young women to fulfil their potential. In our society, there is a misconception that women cannot be successful without compromising their morals or using their bodies for favours. However, that is not how it should be, and it certainly wasn’t the example set by the Proverbs 31 woman. She was industrious, charitable, spiritually alert, physically fit, mentally sound, financially competent, fashionable, and a good homemaker. She was exceptional and more. With Raising Giants, I mentor young girls aged 16–21, teaching them how to embody these characteristics so they can achieve success in life without compromising their values. Currently, I mentor 10 girls per year, but my goal is to expand the programme over time and impact hundreds of females annually.

You put your DJ skills to work at Amazon’s 20th anniversary. DJing for thousands of employees sounds epic! What was that experience like?

It was a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience as my two worlds collided and my colleagues saw a whole new side of me. My usual music taste revolves around Afrobeats, Amapiano, and a touch of Hip Hop. However, for the anniversary event in Luxembourg, I had to switch it up and include some house and pop music to cater to the European audience. I dedicated time to curating the perfect playlist, and taking the stage, I performed my very first open format gig, blending genres like House, Pop, Amapiano, Hip Hop, and a touch of Afrobeats. The crowd loved it, and now I’m gearing up to DJ at our global bi-annual executive conference in the US, moving from our European audience to a global one and DJ’ing for executives. It’s incredible how speaking your goals into existence can become a reality!

Looking ahead, what are your biggest dreams and aspirations for the future, both as Georgia Akuwudike – the executive, and DJ-PIP – the DJ?

As Georgia, an executive, I am thrilled about the opportunity to launch Amazon in Africa. I am eager to expand our presence further into the continent and revolutionise the customer experience. Succeeding here will help create jobs, support small and medium-scale businesses, and make a lasting impact on the continent. When I was offered the role, I told my boss that I think I was “born for this” to make such an impact on the continent. Although I currently specialise in supply chain, logistics, and operations management, I have recently developed an interest in tech which I am now exploring. I believe that adding tech skills to my portfolio will open up endless possibilities for my career.

Regarding DJ-PIP, I have realised the need to enhance my DJ skills. After witnessing the talent and expertise of multiple DJs in the past month, I am motivated to step up my game. Although I have only been in the industry for a year, I refuse to settle for mediocrity. I understand the importance of dedicating time to improving my craft if I want to become the best corporate DJ in the industry.

Beyond my professional aspirations, personally, there is an inner part of me that desires to start a family. It might seem like TMI (too much information), but I also like to keep it real and be transparent and vulnerable. While I am driven to achieve my goals and make a difference, I have come to realise that there is more to life than just accomplishments. I recently shared with my friends that, in 2024, I just want to be babied and have a baby. Haha.

In a nutshell, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead as both Georgia the Executive and DJ-PIP. I am determined to make a positive impact in Africa, elevate my DJ skills, and embrace the joys of starting a family, God willing.

The 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) is just a few days away, and the excitement is already building up. The tournament is the men’s main international football competition on the continent.

24 teams across the regions of the continent will be slugging it out from January 13, 2024, to February 11, 2024, in Côte d’Ivoire. From the most successful team (Egypt, 7 times) to the defending champions, Senegal, we will be highlighting the 8 top teams that we think stand a chance to go all the way.

Nigeria

Starting from the home base, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are aiming to grab their first Nations Cup win since the late Stephen Keshi led the team to the final win against Burkina Faso in 2013. Jose Peseiro will be looking to count on the reigning African best player of the year, Napoli’s goalscoring star Victor Osimhen, for goals in the tournament. Bayern Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface would have added more firepower to the star-studded attack of the Super Eagles but he’s pronounced injured. He’s been replaced in the squad by OGC Nice’s Terem Moffi.

Notable mentions are AC Milan’s Samuel Chukwueze, Atalanta’s explosive forward Ademola Lookman, and Fulham’s duo Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

Ivory Coast

The Elephants of Ivory Coast are a footballing superpower, and it would be a great mistake to underestimate them even as they are the host nation. The two-time winners will be counting on the trickery and goalscoring abilities of their star striker, Wilfred Zaha. The former Crystal Palace man reminded the world of his ability in the UEFA Champions League in his performances for Galatasaray. The Ivorians will also be looking to Manchester United’s 21-year-old rising star, Amad Diallo, for inspiration.

Sébastien Haller, Simon Adingra, Jérémie Boga, Serge Aurier, Seko Fofana, Franck Kessié, Ibrahim Sangaré, Jonathan Bamba, Evan Nicka, and Max-Alain Gradel will look to lift the Jean-Louis Gasset-led side to glory.

Egypt

The Pharaohs of Egypt are the tournament’s most successful team. They have won the competition seven times. A mainstay in the competition, they have also featured in 26 of the 34 editions of the competition’s history. Arguably one of the tournament favourites, the Pharaohs will be looking to win the tournament they last won in 2010 and will be heavily banking on the goalscoring and creative ability of their superstar forward Mohamed Salah.

The Liverpool man will be looking to mend the wounds of the country’s penalty shootout defeat to Senegal in the last edition and push them to glory. The 27-man list released by Rui Vitoria also includes Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt, Germany), MahmoudTrezeguetHassan (Trabzonspor, Turkey), Mostafa Mohamed (FC Nantes, France), and Mohamed Elneny (Arsenal, England).

Algeria

The Desert Foxes of Algeria are one of the teams to also keep an eye on for the upcoming tournament. While their coach, Djamel Belmadi, has been keen to play down their chances of going all the way, it will be difficult to underestimate their chances of winning the tournament.

The 2019 edition winners failed to make it to the knockout stages of the 2021 TotalEnergies AFCON in Cameroon and have experienced a recent dip in form, but with their list of stars for this tournament and the difficult-to-predict nature of the tournament, it’s hard to imagine them not being in the running. Former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez will lead the Algerian contingent alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Rayan Ait Nouri, AS Roma midfielder Houssem Aouar, AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer, and Islam Slimani of Coritiba.

Ghana

In African football, the Ghanaian football team has always been one of the most respected. The Black Stars qualified for the World Cup tournament in Qatar, although they were knocked out of the group stage. Their star-studded team remains one of the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations, a tournament they’ve won four times in the past.

They have stars like Westham United star Muhammed Kudus, Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew, and Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth.

Senegal

Senegal are the defending champions of the African Cup of Nations, and they have stars like Sadio Mane, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Edouard Mendy from the Saudi Pro League and Moussa Niakhate, Cheikhou Kouyate, Fode Ballo-Toure, Nicolas Jackson, Idrissa Gana Gueye, and Pepe Matar Sarr from the Premier League to defend the trophy.

During the last World Cup, the team put up an impressive performance by beating Qatar and Ecuador in the group stage but losing to England in the first knockout stage. Nevertheless, the team is expected to be in the running for the coveted trophy.

Morocco

Morocco made history during the last World Cup by being the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the tournament after beating the incredible Portugal team in the quarter-finals, but they were knocked out by France in the semis. Morocco has only won the AFCON once, and that was in 1976, but their impressive performance during the World Cup puts them at the top of the favourites ranking.

They have stars like Hakim Ziyech, Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat, Nayef Aquero, and Yassine Bounno.

Cameroon

Cameroon has a history of African football. Take away that the football legend, Samuel Eto’o, is from the country, and the team is the second most successful team with five AFCON trophies. Even though it’s been years since they made a huge surprise in the tournament, fans always root for them to put out an outstanding performance.

Cameroon will be hoping for inspired performances from their ball-playing goalkeeper Andre Onana, who plays for Manchester United, and their fiery striker Vincent Aboubakar from Besiktas.

Stan and Blessing Nze have finally given their fans what they’ve been waiting for – a close-up look at their adorable son, Jayden!

Stan Nze took to his Instagram page to share a collection of photos of their precious baby boy, and let’s just say, he’s absolutely melting hearts everywhere.

The photos show Jayden looking adorable in a blue crotchety shawl. It’s clear that his parents, Stan and Blessing, are completely smitten with their little one, and their love for him shines through in every photo.

“Have you met my heartbeat?” Stan captioned one of the photos. “People say he looks so much like his father. Jay Bobo aka Mazi Jnr.”

It’s not hard to see the resemblance between Jayden and his father, Stan. And of course, Jayden has already inherited his mother’s good looks as well.

Just a day before sharing the photos of Jayden, Stan Nze opened up about his experience as a first-time dad in a vlog on their joint YouTube channel. He gave his fans and subscribers a glimpse of a day in his life as a “Daddy Nanny.” Stan is loving fatherhood.

Stan and Blessing welcomed Jayden into the world in October, and they’ve been sharing snippets of their lives as new parents ever since.

Hollywood’s brightest stars sparkled on the purple carpet last Wednesday night in Beverly Hills for the premiere of the highly anticipated musical film, “The Color Purple.” Among the A-list attendees were Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Fantasia, and H.E.R., who turned heads with their glamorous looks.

Taraji P. Henson stunned in a black avant-garde gown with a dramatic 3D collar, accessorizing with a bold BVLGARI necklace and a spiky bun. Her fierce eye makeup added an extra touch of fierceness.

Halle Bailey, who plays Nettie Harris in the film, looked radiant in a vibrant scarlet-red ballgown. The dress featured a ruffled skirt and a criss-cross bodice. She completed the ensemble with a bold red lip and stunning ruby earrings.

Danielle Brooks, who plays Sofia, looked stunning in a purple satin dress with a sexy thigh-high slit.

Ciara chose a one-of-a-kind and dreamy outfit. She revealed her growing baby bump, adorned with golden foil, by leaving her white shirt unbuttoned. Her look was finished off with a long, flowing cloak and baggy pants. Ciara portrays the adult version of Nettie Harris, played by Halle Bailey.

The star-studded event also saw the presence of other notable guests, including Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, who were instrumental in the 1980s film adaptation of “The Color Purple.”

Based on the Tony-winning stage musical, the film is a reimagining of Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and follows the story of Celie, a young Black woman who overcomes years of abuse and discovers her strength and voice. Directed by Blitz Bazawule, the film stars a talented cast, including Fantasia Barrino as Celie, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, and Colman Domingo as Harpo.

“The Color Purple” hits theatres on Christmas Day. See all the looks from the purple carpet:

Nigerian slangs are in a league of their own. We create slangs from everything – music, movies, food – you name it, we slang it. We’re creative like that.

One thing about Nigerians, we’re always catching cruise. Whether we’re throwing banter face-to-face or throwing fire and brimstone on X ( fka Twitter), there’s a slang for every situation. Last year, we had hits like ‘Sope Otilo,’ and the ultimate heartbreak anthem, ‘Las las, na everybody go chop breakfast.’

If you haven’t fully grasped any of these 2023 slangs, no worries, we’ve got you covered with the ultimate slang guide.

Idan

Originally a Yoruba word, “Idan” is now the go-to slang for someone influential, a bit ‘stubborn,’ or someone who has done something outstanding. You might hear something like, “Idan doesn’t chase money; money chases idan.”

Dey Play

This phrase is a playful way of telling someone to stop being foolish or wasting their time. It’s like saying, “Get real, man.” An example is when someone says “By next year, a bag of rice will come down to 10,000 Naira” and another replies, “Dey play”.

On Colos

This is used to ask if someone is in their right mind. An example is, “My guy, you dey alright so, abi you dey on colos?”

You Go Explain Tire; No Evidence

Last year, Burna Boy took the slang “breakfast” global with his hit song “Last, Last” which he calls a heartbreak song. “Breakfast” is a Nigerian slang term for heartbreak. It became prominent when a clip from a Nollywood movie starring Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) went viral. In the clip, he says “Gbo gbo wa la ma je breakfast” meaning, “we’ll all eat breakfast”, and soon enough, Nigerians started using it to mean “heartbreak will go round”. Back to Burna; after last year’s “breakfast”, and this year, he’s asking for proof with “No evidence.” Essentially, your talk is cheap if you can’t back it up. Burna, what slang do you have for us next year?

Let the singles breathe

This one was derived from President Bola Tinubu‘s pre-inauguration speech where he said “Let the poor breathe; don’t suffocate them; we have that responsibility” as he spoke about his then-incoming administration. Now Nigerians use it when they come across something considered luxurious and extravagant (which is basic things right now, by the way). It’s like saying, “Don’t forget about us common folks who are just trying to survive (breathe)” or when they want to let couples flaunt their love online know that single people exist and they should not push us out of the internet with their love.

Must be ment

When someone is clearly out of touch with reality or making bizarre decisions, Nigerians have a quick and brief way to express their concern: “Must be ment.”

Groceries and floating berries

Elevate the classic ‘sapa’ experience with Garri and groundnut by describing it as “groceries and floating berries.” Because why settle for regular suffering when you can make it sound tush?

You go dey trust Adam?

Whoever started this one must’ve had their fair share of disappointments from the Adams of the world. It’s the eternal question: Can you trust Adam? Spoiler alert: probably not.

Sora fun obinrin

For a balanced cautionary note, “Sora fun obinrin” advises you to be wary of women. Yep, watch out for those unexpected moves.

***

Honorary mention is the word “Rizz”. While it’s not a Nigerian slang, Nigerians used it a whole lot this year, together with its cousin “Steeze” which is used to describe an effortlessly fashionable person. Rizz however, is straight-up charisma and attractiveness, especially when it comes to flirting or dating. If you want to hype up someone’s ability to attract or charm others, just say, “They’ve got that rizz.” No wonder it snagged the title of Oxford University Press‘ Word of the Year for 2023. Also, combine “delulu” (delusional) with “solulu” (solutions), and you get the perfect phrase to say someone’s living in fantasyland. When things are getting a bit too dreamy, just drop a casual “Delulu is the solulu.” It means sometimes, delusion can get you there. It might be true.

Love, resilience, and lots of adventures define the incredible 40-year journey of Betty and Soni Irabor. The sweethearts met in 1982 at an album launch, and one year later they said their “I dos.” They’ve spent every passing day growing in love and building a legacy.

The power couple have been sharing their love story on the show, “The Irabors Forever After,” giving viewers an intimate look into their marriage, life, and relationship with friends and family.

Beyond the magical love they share, Betty and Soni, blessed with two beautiful children, are a dynamic force. Betty Irabor, known for her playful spirit, wears multiple hats as a keynote speaker, author, media personality, philanthropist, publisher, entrepreneur, and a fun-loving enthusiast of all things pink. On the other hand, Soni loves life and is a happy-go-lucky person who dabbles in various fields.

In this interview, Betty and Soni Irabor share their secrets to keeping romance alive, navigating challenges, and the wisdom they’ve gathered from their love journey. As they reflect on the past 40 years and envision the chapters yet to unfold, their story becomes a source of inspiration for anyone seeking the keys to a successful and lasting marriage.

You can catch the show “The Irabors Forever After” every Sunday on Africa Magic Urban at 8 p.m., with repeats on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m.

Can you share a little about how you first met and what attracted you to each other?

Betty Irabor: Soni and I met in 1982 at an album launch where I was working as a Public Relations Officer in Surulere and got married a year later, on July 29, 1983, at the Ikoyi registry with a few of our friends as guests. The attraction was his kindness and charm.

Soni Irabor: I met her in 1982. She invited media practitioners to an album launch sponsored by the PR company where she worked, VOO Ltd. I was attracted to her beauty and dashing smile.

Over the past 40 years, what are some of the most memorable moments you’ve shared as a couple?

Betty Irabor: As you would imagine, there have been so many happy memories, like the first time I held my first child in my arms, followed by when my pregnancy test was positive after a long wait for my second child. Those are unforgettable memories most mothers can relate to. There have been other precious memories of parenthood, building dreams, and charting courses together.

Soni Irabor: Travelling together, socialising together, and those precious moments when the children were born.

Marriage comes with its share of challenges. How have you navigated through tough times, and what have you learned from those experiences?

Betty Irabor: Navigating life together is like navigating land mines; we try not to step on the explosives of unguarded emotions, especially in difficult times. “Be angry, but do not sin” is a Bible passage that comes to mind, especially in difficult times. Communication is a vital aspect of marriage, so we try to communicate and talk things through without resorting to any form of verbal violence. Over the years, we have upped our skills in conflict resolution, so we don’t have as many roforofo squabbles as we used to. Communication is a major key to a sane marriage. We also try to manage our expectations of each other. What I have learned is that when you put too much pressure on each other, resentment easily sets in. In tough times, we have found solace in each other.

Soni Irabor: Forgiveness, friendship, love, no malice, trust and understanding, compassion, and respect. We have never fought, I’m happy to reveal.

How do you keep the romance and connection alive after 40 years?

Betty Irabor: To be very honest, it’s very difficult to kindle and rekindle the romance in any marriage, especially going into decades like ours, but we keep doing those things that we love and enjoy.

Soni Irabor: Same answer as 3 above, coupled with the fact that no external influences (even though many have tried!) have been allowed to affect our relationship.

What inspired you to decide on a vow renewal for your 40th anniversary?

Betty Irabor: Looking back at all we have been through, we survived depression, a stroke, and other things we’d rather not talk about, so I thought, Hey, let’s do something fun like a vow renewal for our 40th anniversary! And Soni was game. Sometimes, men just go ahead with their wives’ plans to avoid trouble! But I think he enjoyed every moment of the celebration.

Soni Irabor: It was a refreshing and reassuring thought, and both agreed.

How did you feel about reaffirming your love and commitment in front of your friends and family?

Betty Irabor: It was beautiful. I loved the solemnity of it all. It was good to be reminded of those vows again.

Soni Irabor: It was a happy moment, especially seeing some of our old friends who were with us for the first time.

Tell us about the Docu-series “The Irabors, Forever After” and what inspired you to share your journey with the world

Betty Irabor: “The Irabors Forever After” on Africa Magic captures precious moments and major milestones in our marriage. It is unscripted and unfiltered in its authenticity. It is Soni and I opening our world to our viewers without attempting to change any narrative on marriage. The series is captivating because we are very open about our most vulnerable moments. Every marriage has ups and downs, and ours is no exception. Viewers who have experienced these types of challenges or any other can relate. It’s a celebration of friendship, love, family, and marriage. The high point of the series is the 40th anniversary/renewal of vows ceremony, where family and friends turned up to honour one of theirs. Its relatability and originality are the strongest points of “The Irabors forever after.”

Soni Irabor: Betty convinced me. We felt it would be inspiring for others to share in our adventure. Seeing how two regular souls can make things work through thick and thin.

How do you envision the next chapter of your life together?

Betty Irabor: God willing, we pray for good health of mind and body. We hope to reap more of our labour. We look forward to years of even better friendships and perhaps more adventures exploring some places we said we would but didn’t quite get around to. I am toasting to forever after.

Soni Irabor: Growing old together. Share our moments and memories through our journey together with younger people who may be challenged by the changing fortunes of time. The world is indeed changing!

If there’s something you’ve had to re-do in your marriage in the last 40 years, what would it be?

Betty Irabor: Believe more in his dreams, just as he did mine. Be more intentional about living a healthy and joyful life. I wish I lived more in the moment rather than in the past and future.

Soni Irabor: Maybe how better to make my family (wife and children) even happier.

What’s something you would love to share with the audience and followers that wasn’t aired on the docu-series or that we do not know about?

Betty Irabor: I am a bad cook.

Soni Irabor: I no know o! Love rekindled? Fun and laughter? We always had those, but we became more engrossed in our quest to exhale.

How have your priorities and goals as a couple changed over the years, and how have you supported your individual growth and aspirations?

Soni Irabor: Cherishing our talents and allowing each other to breathe. We believe in each other.

Share a piece of wisdom that you think is particularly important for a successful and lasting marriage.

Betty Irabor: Build your marriage on truth and trust.

Soni Irabor: ‘If you worry, you die; if you don’t worry, you die. So why worry?’ I got that from an old friend many years ago. Respect yourself, respect your spouse, and give each other the benefit of the doubt. You do not own the monopoly of wisdom. Be truthful, and treat those around you with respect. It will come back to you. If you sing the same song in a shouting match, you won’t know which one is mad! Silence has power, especially when applied appropriately.

The Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF) has announced the winners of the 2023 AWIEF Awards during a glamorous awards ceremony that took place on Friday night in Kigali, Rwanda.

Many inspirational and outstanding African women entrepreneurs excelled this year in creating opportunities and positively impacting lives and communities, driving growth for Africa. Out of the 24 powerful women founders and entrepreneurs selected in September as top finalists by an international and independent panel of judges, 8 winners were announced at the awards ceremony that took place at the Kigali Convention Centre, Kigali. The 24 top finalists represented women founders operating in a diverse range of sectors from 14 African countries: Cameroon, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The AWIEF Awards ceremony and gala dinner were the culmination of a highly successful two-day AWIEF2023 conference that attracted more than 500 delegates from over 50 countries, 41 of them African countries.

Each year, the AWIEF Awards recognise, honour, and celebrate outstanding women entrepreneurs and business owners in Africa and across industry sectors for their economic performance and contribution to Africa’s growth and social development.

This year’s event unveiled the inaugural AWIEF Lifetime Leadership Award. This award was bestowed on Fatma Samoura, FIFA Secretary General, in recognition of her outstanding leadership and contributions to the world of sports. It was also a tribute to her inspiring impact and accomplishments on a global scale, as the first non-European, the first African, and the first-ever female to lead FIFA as Secretary General in its 116-year history.

“What an honour to receive the inaugural AWIEF Lifetime Leadership Award. This award is not just for me, but for all the people who have dedicated their lives to our game and helped us transform women’s football over the last few years. They have created a beautiful legacy—a FIFA that is focused on football and is respected by international organisations, and a sport that captures the hearts and minds of boys and girls around the world and brings them joy and happiness,” said Ms. Fatma Samoura.

“We have given more girls and women the chance to play football, even in countries where it would have been considered almost impossible only a few years ago.”

Going further in her acceptance speech, Ms. Samoura urged women to “invest in African football,” as it offers huge untapped potential.

She said, “Then, of course, you women need to invest in football. I will be retiring peacefully in my beautiful country, Senegal, if at least I get a phone call by the next Women’s World Cup from many of you saying, ‘Madam, because we saw you in Rwanda and decided to invest in football, today we are club owners.’ So, the ball is in your court; make it happen because you have many talents.”

“Remember one thing: football is the future for Africa; football is the future for building peace across the world. Football is a universal message; football is something that transmits love, that gives mind, that also transcends borders and brings people together.”

Irene Ochem, AWIEF Founder and CEO, said in her AWIEF Awards 2023 ceremony and gala dinner opening remarks, “Fatma Samoura has shown exceptional leadership in such a male-dominated sector as sports, and in particular, football. She is an inspirational role model for us other women, and we are truly excited about honouring and celebrating her tonight.”

The winners of the AWIEF Awards 2023 are:

YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR AWARD
Salamba Diene, CEO, Biosene Sarl, Senegal

TECH ENTREPRENEUR AWARD
Kidist Tesfaye, Founder & CEO, YeneHealth, Ethiopia

On life before Big Brother:

“Just before Big Brother, I was in the family stage of my life. I think I shifted my focus from working to building a family. But, you know, I’ve been around for a long time. So, yeah, it’s been quite progressive. I’ve gone from strength to strength in my career.

But, yeah, when I got pregnant with my firstborn, whom I actually did not end up having, I actually ended up losing that child. I took a step back and decided to be more intense and intentional about family planning. I was also quite domesticated before I entered Big Brother. But prior to all of that domestication, I was steadily advancing in my career, to be honest.

My pregnancy was not planned, and I recall feeling uncertain about the potential outcome. When I lost my child, I carried a sense of guilt, believing that my experience was somehow to blame for the loss. It wasn’t until I lost that pregnancy that I realised how much I had hoped for the child. Subsequently, my partner and I made a deliberate decision to conceive again. However, it was not a straightforward journey, and it took some time before our firstborn arrived.”

On her mother’s inspiration

“I hold my mother in high regard. Her ability to balance two jobs while caring for four children is truly admirable. She largely shouldered the responsibility on her own and even managed to provide me with a private education. I was exposed to numerous opportunities and sources of knowledge. For me, she epitomises what it means to be an exceptional mother. I’ve encountered other people’s mothers, each with their own unique stories, but my mom is my aspiration in many aspects. I often tell her that if I could be just half the mother and wife she is, I would be content. Many of these values and qualities begin at home during childhood. So, yes, I wanted to emulate her, but it’s important to note that my journey is not solely based on emulating her. I had to take what I needed from her example and add my own essence to create my unique path.”

Ebele Iyiegbu, popularly known as Lush Eby, the founder of The KIEK Foundation and the wife of popular Nigerian socialite Obi Cubana, is featured on the cover of the latest issue of GO Lifestyle Magazine.

In the exclusive interview, she talks about her journey as a businesswoman, philanthropist, and mother, while also carving out her own unique identity.

Read excerpts from the interview below:

On her entrepreneurial journey:

I am a woman who has always been passionate about making a difference, impacting the lives of children and women, and writing my name in the sands of time by leaving behind a legacy that those who are yet unborn can read about. These have inspired me to pursue numerous ventures. As a 21st-century African woman, I made up my mind to become a trailblazer by leveraging my passion and strength. I am always drawn to businesses that inspire and bring joy to mankind. I established my NGO, the Kiek Foundation, not as a business venture but as an avenue to impact my society, one life at a time. I love entertainment, planning, and parties so that led me to establish my events planning and decorating company, the party managers, and gifts Et’al, a gift shop. I have several other businesses and several others in partnership with people. I have a coaching company, the Ahava Coach which aims to empower women to live and become the best versions of themselves. I am also the vice president of Cubana Group Ltd. I am an author. I recently introduced my first book, WIFILY EVER AFTER, 15 lessons marriage taught me. I have other books in the pipeline. I have other products that I partnered with other brands.

Her tips on effective strategies for managing and growing successful businesses:

Prioritize, Draw a line between home and work, Delegate, Avoid time wasters and irrelevant issues, Make time for your spouse, Make time for yourself, Exercise regularly, Be close to God and Pray regularly.

What has helped her maintain a strong and fulfilling partnership in her marriage:

God, Friendship, Forgiveness, Regular communication, Patience, Trust and honesty, Shared goals and values and Openness

On her charity foundation, Kiek Foundation:

As a child, my parents were my most significant influence and role model, especially for all that they did for the less privileged. I saw how my parents provided for the welfare of the disadvantaged in my community by feeding them, clothing them, and paying the school fees of the children who could not afford to do so. I will not forget how my dad had packages and gifts for several families during Christmas. The excitement on their faces whenever he gives these gifts to them is priceless. Although my dad did all he was doing out of volition, he never knew that the community was watching. It was just a matter of time before his good deeds became rewarded with the title of ‘Onwa- Obosi,’ which he never shared with anyone in the community until his demise

In no time, I found myself taking after him as I soon began to visit orphanages to put smiles on the faces of the children. I started going for outreaches organized by my Church, and by the time I eventually got married, I realized that my husband shared my passion for impacting people’s lives. At this time, he had gifted houses to people while touching their lives in more ways than you can imagine. To him, it felt like the natural thing to do. Some of our close friends who saw how we were touching people’s lives suggested that we make it formal by building a structure around it by registering a Non-Governmental Organisation where we can get more people involved. Two of my friends, Joy Onoh and Ashley Olachi, were helpful during this phase. Even though I initially objected to registering it as an NGO because of my kind of person, they insisted. So, I took my time and prayed about how to start.

One incident that convinced me of the need to start was that which took place on our way from Church sometime around 2017. My first son, Alex, is passionate about helping the needy. He always made it a point for us to stop on our way from Church every Sunday to support some beggars we find on the street with money. So, on this Sunday, we had barely driven 3 kilometres from the Church when we saw some people begging for alms. Alex insisted that we give them money, but on that day, I had nothing on me. I told him there was no way I would be able to assist or support them as I did not have money. Although he insisted, I drove off since I did not have anything to give to the beggars. By the time we got home, I realized Alex had become moody for the rest of that day. Upon inquiry, Alex told me that he was not happy because we did not give money to the beggars, and they would think we did not care. I explained to him that I drove off because there was no money on me. At some point, he insisted that we bring all the beggars to our house; I eventually had to let him know that we could not bring every homeless person home because it was not
sustainable.

At this point, I became convinced that it was time to register the NGO. Even though we may not be able to care for all the homeless people, feed every hungry person, or send every child back to school, I knew we could make a difference, one child at a time. I used KIEK because I needed to delve into children. KIEK came from the first letter of my children’s name. My husband supported me all through and gave me his blessing. He is still doing his humanitarian deeds and is a co-founder of the organization. My love for children and women played a significant role in why the mandate of the NGO revolves around children and women as secondary beneficiaries. All I have done in the past has something to do with children. Children are not only the most vulnerable in times of emergency but also the most vulnerable in times of famine and war. I made up my mind to protect them as best as I could. When people ask me why I am focusing on education, I tell them I love the freedom education affords. Though my parents never attended a formal school, they made it a point to start reading in their old age. My dad was passionate about education. Even up till his death, he insisted that I get a PhD. He even promised to sponsor me, not minding I was already in my husband’s house.

On Thursday, October 12, and Friday, October 13, Spotify brought together celebrities, podcasters, influencers, music executives, media personalities, and music fans at two experiential events dubbed #SpotifyPodcastsLagos and #SpotifyAfrobeats.

The events held at La Madison Place in Lekki, Lagos, showcased and celebrated the rich culture of Afrobeats and the remarkable achievements of the genre through the years.

Speaking at the Afrobeats Celebration, Jocelyne Muhutu-Remy, Spotify’s Managing Director, Sub-Saharan Africa, said, “Spotify’s commitment to connecting people with the music they love is at the heart of everything we do. We’re thrilled to continue celebrating Afrobeats’ milestones and reinforce our commitment to the growth of the music ecosystem in Nigeria and across Africa.”

The two-day celebrations began with a masterclass session featuring Ncebakazi Manzi, the podcast manager for Spotify in Sub-Saharan Africa. The session provided an engaging platform for podcast enthusiasts, diving deep into the craft of storytelling, exploring innovative techniques and insights, and illustrating Spotify’s commitment to empowering podcast creators. Following the session, there was a fireside chat facilitated by Gwenevier Ehimen Lem from the Association of African Podcasters and Voiceover Artists (APVA), featuring a panel of industry experts, including Tony Doe from “Into the Podverse”and “Tony Doe Media”, Ayomide Tayo from “Loose Talk”, Dami Aros from “So Nigerian”, and Fay Fay, the founder of “Naija Podhub.”

Attendees were then later treated to captivating and thought-provoking live podcast recordings featuring highly acclaimed Nigerian content creators Jola Ayeye and Feyikemi Abudu from “I Said What I Said” and Joey Akan from “Afrobeats Intelligence.” In a conversation with Victor Okpala, Spotify’s Artist and Label Partnerships Manager for West Africa, Joey Akan delved into a range of topics, spanning from the success of Afrobeats and playlisting strategies to Spotify’s contributions to the music ecosystem.

The “I Said What I Said” live show guests were artists Nissi and Pheelz, followed by a live Q&A session. The event ended with an exhilarating performance from Pheelz.

On Day 2, the celebration commenced with an electric atmosphere and performances that saw a huge turnout of Afrobeats enthusiasts who were eager to indulge in the night’s festivities. The dance floor was alive with activity, and the room hummed with infectious enthusiasm, thanks to DJ Tohbad, who skillfully set the stage with a continuous flow of chart-topping tracks by Nigerian artists.

The evening transitioned smoothly into the night’s performances, featuring some of the most talented emerging and established artists from Nigeria. Bloody Civilian, who is also a Spotify RADAR Africa artist, had guests singing along to her hit songs, including “I Don’t Like You”, making the event one to remember. Next on stage was FAVE, who has been a Spotify EQUAL artist, and enthralled the crowd with some of her hit songs, including “Baby Riddim”, “Beautifully”, and “Mr. Man”, leaving the guests yearning for more.

Up and coming Nigerian street pop singer Shallipopi set the stage on fire, delivering crowd-pleasing hits including “Sharpiru”, “Ex-Convict”, and “Elon Musk.” Sarz, the DJ, producer, and mixing engineer extraordinaire, had the audience vibing with a set featuring both chill music and party bops, heightening the vibe for the night. Ruger, the Nigerian sensational Afrodancehall singer, closed off the night, starting off with some of his hit songs that lit up the audience, displaying his unique style.

The venue was awash with gentle, warm lighting that accentuated Spotify’s brand image, while the stage featured mesmerising visual projections showcasing details about the Afrobeats genre. The experiential booths were designed to recreate the Afrobeats microsite, offering attendees a chance to be fully immersed in the chronology of the Afrobeats genre.

The music streaming giants recently launched an Afrobeats hub for all lovers of Afrobeats, a one-stop destination to explore all the Afrobeats playlists, and also successfully completed the launch of the Afrobeats: Journey of a Billion streams site that celebrates the milestone of the genre.

PiggyVest, formerly known as piggybank.ng, a leading online savings and investing platform in Nigeria, has published its first ever annual savings report.

According to the savings platform, the survey was carried out between April and May this year, and thousands of Nigerians—of different ages, genders, and income brackets—were surveyed about their saving and spending habits. The respondents were also asked about debt, unplanned expenses, and their financial plans for the future.

In their findings, more than 3 in 10 Nigerians report being in debt, while many are saving towards rent, japan, and education, the PiggyVest Savings Report 2023 reveals.

According to the press release, “emigration from Nigeria—colloquially known as Japan—is the third most common goal among Nigerian income earners. This follows a trend of Nigerians seeking to relocate in search of better economic opportunities and professional growth. Other savings goals in the top 3 are rent/housing and personal education.

The report explores various aspects of financial wellbeing, including income, saving and spending habits, emergency funds, unplanned gifts and expenses, debt, and future financial plans. It is based on insights obtained from a survey of over a thousand Nigerians of different ages, genders, and income brackets.

Another key finding from the report concerns black taxes and debt. Over 4 in 5 Nigerian income earners pay black tax, the report reveals, making it a significant expense category for many Nigerians. Also, more than 3 in 10 Nigerians report being in debt to family and friends, a loan app, a bank, or other sources.

The report isn’t entirely grim, however. From the findings, the culture of saving is still alive and well in Nigeria. 79% of Nigerians report having a savings habit, with 64% saving consistently and 15% saving occasionally.”

Odun Eweniyi, co-founder and chief operating officer of PiggyVest, said, “This report is a testament to PiggyVest’s commitment to financial empowerment and inclusivity. It shows us where we are, what we’ve done, and what we’ve yet to do.

At PiggyVest, we believe in equipping individuals with the tools and knowledge they need to secure their financial future, and this report underscores our dedication to that mission.”

Super Eagles of Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen ranked 8th place at the 2023 Men’s Ballon d’Or Monday night.

Osimhen was in fine form in the 2022–2023 season, as his 25 league goals helped Italian football royalty Napoli to their first Seria A title in 33 years.

He pipped Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan and AC Milan’s Rafael Leao to clinch the Best Striker in Serie A gong.

Osimhen scored five times in six games for Napoli as they reached the quarterfinal stages of the UEFA Champions League. He was instrumental in the Super Eagles sealing a ticket for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His league goals helped him become the first African to top the Serie A scorers’ chart and break George Weah’s record for the most goals scored by an African in the Italian league.

Victor Osimhen is the first Nigerian to be nominated in the male category in 24 years.
Kanu Nwankwo was the last Super Eagles star to earn a nomination. With his 8th-place finish, the goal-scoring machine sets the record as the highest-ranked Nigerian player at the Ballon d’Or and also the highest-ranked African player at the year’s edition.

According to the journalist Giuseppe Pastore, “this is the best result ever for a Napoli player, given that the previous record belonged to Ruud Krol, who ended 15th in 1980.”

Victor Osimhen is joined in the top 10 by Julian Alvarez, Kevin de Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, Luka Modric, Rodri, Bernardo Silva, Vini Jr., and Lionel Messi.

The Lagos-based artist embarked on the journey on October 28, and will be painting until the October 31. Oyinola is attempting to set a new record for the longest painting marathon (72 hours). The current longest painting record is held by Ronald Palmeart, who painted for 60 hours in 2013.

At the start of her attempt, Lola announced that she had been given the go-ahead by Guinness World Records. She said in a tweet, “I’m thrilled to announce that Guinness World Records has given me the green light for the longest painting marathon! On October 28–30, 2023, I’ll embark on an incredible journey of creativity and endurance.”

Tyla, the South African singer songwriter who is the creative behind the song “Water” whose dance challenge has taken over TikTok is the latest guest on The Dotty Show on Apple music and she lets listeners in on how it feels like to have a global hit, her ambitions for world domination, her debut album, and what’s like being a famous. She also talks about being a fangirl to Tems, why it would be cute to have had Rema take her to prom, her biggest ick, and her most surprising DM slide.

“Since I could remember, I always saw myself on the biggest stages, like performing with the biggest people, huge crowds, like pop star vibes. So that’s always been the goal,” Tyla said, while discussing her ambitions for world domination, adding that she hopes to emulate Rihanna. “Like, she’s the perfect example coming from somewhere the outside of America, like killing the music, fashion, beauty, like everything. Like that’s the goal,” she said.

Being famous comes with its price. For Tyla, she can no longer go to a theme park in South Africa that she loves. “It’s called Go Reef City. I can’t go, I can’t. It’s a whole thing. Like in general, I can’t just make decisions like this. I can’t say, let me go here, let go there. Like it has to be a whole thing, which is something I need to get used to,” she said, adding, “I’m the type of person to just go to the shop wearing two different shoes, like two different socks, hoodie messy hair, like I’m that type of person, but I can’t really do that anymore because I mean, any picture, hey, you have to be on point. But I mean, it’s what comes with it.”

About her debut Album, Tyla says she’s “ready to show everyone for real.” “Like ‘Water’ is killing it, and I just want people to have more music out that’s my sound and my vibe so they can get to know me as an artist. I don’t wanna just be a song, you know? So I’m very excited. We have the cover, we have the name, everything is ready for this.” She says fans should expect “a fresh sound. More bangers, like a lot of bangers. Afropiano, pop, piano, Afrobeats. Like it’s Africa to the world for real, but also mixing it with my pop and RnB influence, so yeah I think it’s gonna be amazing. Can’t wait for everyone to hear.

See highlights of the interview below:

Tyla on Being South African
Yo, it’s a flex. Like, I keep saying it like, it’s such a flex to be from South Africa, especially right now. Like South Africa has changed completely since Amapiano sort of booming and it’s doing what it’s doing. Like the vibe in South Africa is completely different. Everyone has the sense of pride for our country and we are always bragging about it. We know that we have the source, the parties in South Africa are crazy and yeah, I’m just happy that I’m able to be one of the artists to push it more.

On the Global Success of “Water”
It’s exciting! Yo, I just love seeing the videos. People tag me, and seeing like Megan Thee stallion use it, Christina Aguilera, Tinashe, like all these crazy people that I look up to using my song, it doesn’t feel real and it’s all happening all at once.

Most Surprising DM slide
Gunna. It wasn’t a slide. I don’t think so. Like, I like when I get DMs from people, I don’t try to think, okay, this guy wants my bums, you know. Like that’s not what I wanna assume off the bat, you know? He just said that the music’s dope, you know, and he wants to work. So I’m like, okay Gunna! I never expected you to like the vibes, but, okay.

Celebrity She would Have Most Liked to Have Taken her to Prom
Ooh, I don’t really have celebrity crushes. Eh, but I think it would be cool if maybe Rema, would be cute.

Dotty: I saw you hanging out with Rema like last year. Like you guys got pictured together…

Tyla: Yeah. That was so dramatic. After that situation I realised Hollywood vibes? You can’t trust everything you see. Because that looked like a scandal. But yeah, just friends.

On Being a Fangirl to Tems
I have to try my best to be composed. I think I was really a fan girl when I saw Tems. Yeah, because I really look up to Tems, like I love her to bits, so when I saw her, and she looks so beautiful, like in person… She’s tall. She looks like from a different world. It was crazy. Like, I just love her and we were speaking and she said she was proud and she was so nice. But I always like, I really don’t like when people have their phones and they’re trying to record the moments. Like, I find it so awkward. Like, Like the interaction was genuine, so that was good.

On Whose Instagram she stalks
I’m really exposing myself on this Dotty show, but I look at… you know, Duke Dennis and Kai Cenat?. That whole AMP house. They do this thing in Atlanta where they do these shows, like their streams. Hey guys. But I only watch because Duke Dennis is fine.

Tyla’s Biggest ick
Um, a lot of girls say this, but like, honestly seeing a guy’s crack is just like no ways. Like no ways. Like why is your crack showing? That’s my biggest, I can’t. It’s just like, why can’t you feel the breeze? Do you not know that your whole crack is out?

Nigerian music star CKay was on Thursday, September 21st, unveiled as the face of Ralph Lauren Polo Oud at an exclusive dinner event in Lagos, Nigeria. The event was a celebration of the fusion of CKay’s distinctive style and Ralph Lauren’s elegance, where the Polo Oud was introduced as a fragrance embodying sophistication and allure.

In an interview with BellaNaija, CKay shed light on the inception of this exciting partnership, emphasising the importance of aligning with a brand that resonates with one’s personality and values. “When partnering with a brand, I feel like it’s very important that both parties have a lot in common and that your vibe and theirs align. I felt an alignment with Ralph Lauren. I am a huge fan of Oud perfumes and everyone that knows me know that I’m a strong perfume enthusiast. I love to smell good and I love my environment to smell good. So, it was just a very ‘meant to be situation’ for me to be here today to tell Nigerians how amazing Polo Oud is and why they should use it.”

The partnership between CKay and Ralph Lauren stems not only from their shared love for fragrances but also from a mutual appreciation for exceptional clothing. CKay remarked, “Ralph Lauren makes amazing clothes as well, one of which I’m wearing right now. The brand has a very distinct style that aligns with mine.”

CKay also expressed his passion for smelling good and highlighted his extensive collection of Oud perfumes. He added, “In very warm climates like the Middle East and Africa, there are certain types of perfumes that just smell better. And Oud is a very good choice for warm climates.”

The event witnessed the unveiling of CKay as the first African face of the Polo Franchise, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the music star and the renowned fashion brand. Guests were treated to a sumptuous 3-course dinner and cocktails inspired by the ingredients of the Polo Oud fragrance, namely Orange Blossom, Rose, and Oud. The atmosphere was an enchanting journey into the world of Polo, mirroring the intrigue and luxury that Polo Oud encapsulates.
