Twelve-year-old Blue Ivy is no stranger to working alongside her mum, Beyoncé. Last year, the duo performed together on stage during the Renaissance world tour. This time, she’s teaming up with her mum again for her film debut in “Mufasa: The Lion King,” Disney’s forthcoming prequel to the 2019 Lion King reboot.

Her casting was revealed in the film’s first trailer, released today, Monday, April 29th. Blue Ivy will voice “Kiara,” the lion cub daughter of King Simba and Queen Nala, while Beyoncé will return as Nala.

Speaking about Blue Ivy’s casting, the director of “Mufasa: The Lion King,” Barry Jenkins said: “A buddy of mine, Matthew Cherry, made the short film called “Hair Love” that Blue Ivy did the audiobook of. Starting this project and just having that in the ether, I was like, ‘Is it worth a shot? Would Blue Ivy want to do it? Would Beyoncé want to act opposite her daughter? Is it too close to home?’ But once we put the question to them, they both responded with enthusiasm.”

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting emerging talents in Nollywood, Anee Icha talks about her role in the recent movie “Casa De Novia,”  her advocacy for mental health, and her dream directors and actors she’ll love to work with.

In our previous feature, we caught up with Paul Nnadiekwe, who talked to us about his career in the film industry, from his roles in the AMVCA-nominated movie “Afamefuna,” and the upcoming “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” and the unique experience of being born on a leap day. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Anee Icha is an actress, writer, and producer, and is popularly known for her role in the drama series “Before 30.” For Anee, acting wasn’t a preordained path for her; rather, she embraced it and poured her heart into every opportunity. Her approach to characters? Love.

In “Casa De Novia,” Anee is Yoyo, a spirited young woman starting a journalism career in the bustling city of Lagos. In reality, Anee is Anee – passionate, emotional, fiery and a lover of people, yet, she also identifies as the founding mother of The Hermit Haven Society, the president of The Quietude Quorum and the convener of The Reclusive Introvert Alliance. You can tell Anee is introverted.

Beyond acting, Anee champions mental health awareness. She compares the brain to a car engine, emphasising its central role in shaping our experiences. highlights the importance of self-care for this vital organ. It’s no surprise neuroscience would have been her chosen field if she wasn’t on our screens either as Yoyo or Dami.

We bet you’ll enjoy reading this interesting conversation we had with Anee just as much as we did. You might even want to get a chilled glass of your favourite drink to read along with.

Hey Anee! How’s your day going?

Hey BellaNaija, thank you for having me. My day’s going pretty well actually; I’m a sucker for rainy mornings (not nights, just mornings lol), so whenever it rains in the morning, my mood for that day is pretty much sorted.

Let’s jump into your latest film, “Casa De Novia.” What initially drew you to the character of Yoyo?

Hmmm, well I’m going to be honest and say nothing drew me to Yoyo at first. Truthfully, I was rather afraid to play her because there were such specific expectations her creators had of her, and I didn’t want to let them down. She had a grasp of things that I had never experienced, things I didn’t know how to do; like being able to speak pidgin English properly for example. When you hear pidgin English spoken the right way, it’s like music, it’s beautiful and carries weight in a way that regular English sometimes cannot. So it was the little details of her that scared me and made me hesitant to get to know her.

However, there is a special kind of magic that enters us when we have people who believe in us and see the potential that we maybe cannot see in ourselves yet, which is where I must give major props to Mr Akinmolayan. He believed more than anyone that I could bring Yoyo to life in the way she needed to be seen, and that helped me approach her with less fear. So I did, and let me tell you that she’s a great gal! Lol. If you know what goes on in Yoyo’s head, you’d love her. You’d give her a couple of knocks now and again, but you’d love her. Her foolishness is innocent, her antics are without any malicious intent and her heart seems to be in the right place. I think these were the things that drew me to her at the end of the day.

Taking a step back, how did your acting journey begin? Was there a specific moment you knew this was your calling?

When it comes to callings, I am cautious because there are so many moving parts that come together to create success, and we conflate being successful at something with being called to do it, and that’s not necessarily always true. To be honest, if we were to go by the reach of my “celebrity” and “success” in the industry, I shouldn’t dream of saying acting is my calling because I’ve done maybe 10 projects in the span of my career so far, and that’s not a lot, but with each of these projects, the characters I have been charged with playing have gotten their time in the sun and they come across to the audience as real and that is a whole lot. That’s what means the most to me, but it’s relative. So callings are a little tricky (unless you’re the legendary Micheal Jackson), but doing the work wherever it is you find yourself is less tricky and a little easier to manage.

So whenever I get the opportunity to do the work in this field, I am grateful and I throw all I can into it, and I pray I get to keep doing it (maybe when I blow I will get back to you on the calling part, hahaha). How my acting career began is a lovely story, but it will take another 10 or so minutes to tell it with all the nuance and sweet-sweet gist that makes it such a good story lol! Let me say that I was blessed to begin my career with people who approached the art of filmmaking from a very high standard, and that showed me what is possible for Nollywood and those of us who are a part of her. Shout out to the fantastic folks at Nemsia for giving me that gift.

From your first role to Yoyo in Casa De Novia, how has your approach to acting evolved? What has changed?

Ama from “Before 30” was the first person that was given to me and she was just a happy bunny! (Do you know my big sister calls me that?) Now that I think of it, the people in the projects I’ve worked on who have given me the most of themselves are the happy-go-lucky, quirky, innocent ones (hmm, I have some thoughts, but I shall keep them to myself lol). Yoyo is – you know what I think it is? And this is hopefully going to answer the question about how my approach to becoming these people has evolved (if it has… hopefully it has) I think it’s love- don’t barf yet, just stay with me and we’ll land this plane safely I promise! Love is one of, if not the most universal language that everything responds to. Think about it, from Ama from in Before 30, to Ejiro in Babysitting Ejiro, to Stella in C&C, to Yoyo in Case De Novia; all of them are unapologetically themselves in all their mess and madness and whatever else in between; that’s love.

And I might be talking nonsense, but I think that’s what it is for me; I think that’s the place that me and these people meet. We’re not perfect, not by any means, but we’re okay with who we are. So the answer I think is I evolve and allow these people to do whatever they need to do, however foolish, embarrassing or serious because love makes it okay for me to put myself away for a while so that someone else can be seen as they are. This isn’t part of the question, but I have to say that I think the greatest gift any parent can give their child is this; the unshakeable knowing that they are whole and they are enough. It’s a blessing I wouldn’t trade for anything else.

In one word, how would you describe your acting career so far?

Can we skip this question? Lol! Ummm, oh there are so many words, some of which I’m not sure can be said out loud. I want to say fulfilling and prolific and rewarding and all that good stuff, but mhaaan that just wouldn’t be the whole truth. It’s been those things sometimes and other times, it’s been difficult and slow and confusing. I would love to do more definitely, but I want the more to mean something more than a paycheque, and that’s where we run into some murky waters. There are people that I would love to bring to life, but it’s not just about me and what I want.

As I said there are many moving parts, and wanting is one thing, but there’s also the fact that what you want must also want you in return, and when that happens I am stoked, but it doesn’t always happen. So I would describe my career as this, there are times when it’s felt like “Everything Everywhere All At Once” (the most incredible film I’ve seen in a long time by the way) and there are times when it felt like nothing nowhere and this is the end. I am grateful that God has kept me when it has been good and held me when it has been otherwise. That wasn’t one word, I know, forgive me.

Just curious, if acting wasn’t in the cards, what path might you have pursued?

Neuroscience. There you have your one word, lol.

A documentary on the Chibok girls’ abduction titled “The Harvest” by documentary filmmaker, Joel Kachi Benson is in the works. Joel is known for his work as co-director of the Disney Original “Madu and producer of “Daughter of Chibok,” a VR experience he wrote and produced which won the Lion for Best Immersive Story at the 76th Venice Film Festival.

“The Harvest” follows the lives of four Nigerian mothers from the Chibok community in Borno State and their struggles to educate their children. It marks the 10th anniversary of the terrorist organisation Boko Haram’s attack and abduction of two hundred and seventy-six young girls from a school in the village of Chibok.

In a conversation with Deadline, Joel said “I have spent the last five years with the mothers and survivors of the Chibok kidnappings. I’ve listened to their stories, and what I’ve learnt is that these women are more than the tragedy that is mostly used to describe them. My aim with “The Harvest” is to give them a platform to tell their own story and show a side to these heroines that the world hardly sees: a community of mothers who have stood, and continue to stand as pillars, working together to make tomorrow better for their children. That is the ultimate bravery.”

Presented by Impact Partners in association with Shark Island Productions and JB Multimedia Studios, “The Harvest” is produced by Adeyinka Oduniyi, Jamie Patricof, Katie McNeill, Rachel Halilej, and Samira Mohammed.

With two extraordinary seasons delivered to our screens, The Real Housewives Of Lagos (RHOLagos), has become synonymous with high fashion, because its casts always come correct.

They did not disappoint on the recently released S2 reunion episode which is now airing on Showmax, keeping the energy as vibrant as ever they donned first-class pieces from some of Nigeria’s leading Designers. Let’s take a look at their breathtaking outfits below:

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer in Anjy Luminee Couture

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer was on a mission to serve us an ethereal goddess vibe in her white + tan classic gown with nude illusion details by Anjy Luminee Couture, highlighting her softer side.

The fierce Melanin Magic RHOLagos cast was adorned in an elegant mermaid dress with pearls and feathers embellishments and some drapings. Mariam complemented her look with a statement feather headpiece by Urez Kulture, a stylish low bun and dangling diamond earrings.

Faith Morey in Amy Aghomi

Just as she had said on the show, you’ll either see Faith Morey with a crown or a train. The six-foot Amazon goddess attended the reunion in a red 3D floral dress with golden-brown infusions, quite like her beautiful skin.

Designed by Amy Aghomi, a Lagos-Warri-based fashion designer, the dress had an exaggerated floral collar which extended above her head into a remarkable bouquet of red flower stalks and featured Faith’s signature flowing train.

She complemented her look with a diamond-studded neckpiece and accompanying diamond studs from Boz Jewelry. Her feet were strapped in complementary red-heeled sandals, her hair was sleeked back from her face though with a pretty centre part and she rocked a soft sultry glam with the exceptional look.

Laura Ikeji in Medlin Couture

Laura Ikeji showed up looking stunning in a high-slit beaded ivory dress by Medlin Couture paired with gloves and a rosette-embellished cape.

Styled by Medlin Boss and Gabriel Anthony, the bubbly RHOLagos cast complimented her look with side bangs, diamond accessories from Saint Tracys and feathery heels.

Dr. Rommel in Sevon Dejana

Dr Rommel stepped out in his distinct flamboyant style sporting a custom crystal-beaded yellow ensemble by Sevon Dejana featuring Naija’s traditional top layered with a cape.

The outfit was accompanied by a custom cap, coral beads and a gold-detailed walking stick to complete the look

Bellastylistas: @mariamadeyemitimmer, @moreyfaith, @lauraikeji & @iamdrrommel

British Nigerian actor, Damson Idris shines as the star of Essence Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Of The Moment’ issue. Described as “confident, with a charisma that reminds you of the Old Hollywood greats he speaks of with admiration,” Damson graces the cover with his aura.

The American monthly lifestyle magazine goes on to paint a picture of Damson’s’ undeniable presence: “The Foundation of a man. He stands 6’1, with deep auburn skin and a 4K pearly smile that glistens like ultraviolet rays off charcoal mines in the deepest sands off the coast of Nigeria. Yes, it’s that deep. His charm is tangible. His infectiousness is palatable. His future is limitless.”

For the Essence ‘Sexiest Man Of The Moment’ May/June issue, the London-born and bred actor opens up about fatherhood, his love for his mother, Black women, staying humble, and the exciting top-secret project he’s working on after “Snowball.”

He also discusses his views on beauty, fashion, and the lessons he’s learned about protecting his privacy.

See excerpts from the interview:

On the relationship with his mother and his love for black women

“My mother’s name is Silifat Abike Idris,” the actor says. “She is my hero, my best friend, my guru. Something she always reminds me about is to be humble, however high I climb.”

“My mother is a Black woman, and that love stays with me. I feel protected by Black women. I feel loved by Black women. I feel at home.”

On his future fatherhood ambitions

“Oh, man, I’ll be the best dad. It doesn’t matter what age I’ll be, I’ll still be the cool dad. Like, yeah, My dad’s coming to pick me up from school. I’ll just love it, you know? I love kids. Being an uncle is amazing, because I get to take the baby and then give it back—but I can’t wait to be a father and have a big family.”

On how he feels like he is one of Essence’s sexist men of the moment

“I have no idea! [laughs] But I’m beautiful. I didn’t mean that.

“If I wasn’t me, I’d be like, Oh, that guy cares. That guy cares about what he’s doing, aside from aesthetics or whatever. I think if you care about what you do, that’s sexy—and that’s inspiring. So, yeah, maybe that’s why I’m sitting here in this chair.”

Nollywood filmmaker, Ini Usendiah, is set to captivate African audiences with the international release of his directing debut, “Trepidation” across ten countries and nineteen cinemas this Easter.

Inspired by a desire to reshape the African horror genre and explore the intricate connection between the spiritual and physical realms, “Trepidation” promises to deliver a spine-tingling experience like no other. It tells the chilling tale of a young mother played by Theresa Edem (Ayamma, My Village People, The Olive) haunted by inexplicable nightmares after visiting an abandoned family property. Her journey uncovers a terrifying family secret that has been concealed for decades.

Supported by Nollywood actors, Preach Bassey (Africa Magic ‘s ‘The Covenant’) and Tersy Akpata (Showmax’s ‘Wura’) through eerie atmospheres, haunting visuals, and chilling encounters, “Trepidation” invites viewers to confront the mysterious unseen forces that shape our reality. With its unique blend of supernatural intrigue and psychological depth, “Trepidation” stands out as a testament to African storytelling.

Commenting on the film, Usendiah said, “Trepidation” represents a journey into the unknown, where the lines between the physical and spiritual blur. It is my hope that audiences will be both thrilled and enlightened by the revelations contained within.”

“Trepidation” is slated for release on March 29, just in time for Good Friday across Francophone West Africa. Audiences can expect an unforgettable cinematic experience that will leave them questioning the nature of reality and the existence of unseen forces.

In this edition of “Meet the Star,” a segment dedicated to spotlighting emerging talents in Nollywood, Paul Nnadiekwe talks about his role in “Afamefuna,” “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” and the most interesting thing about being born on a leap day.

For our previous feature, we had a chat with Teniola Aladese who talked with us about her career in the film industry, her roles in Nollywood titles like “Lara of Lagos,” “Love in a Pandemic,” “Little Black Book,” and shared how she manages her mental health. You can read it here, in case you missed it.

Paul Nnadiekwe is a Nigerian actor, filmmaker and entertainer. He made his debut film series release as lead actor in the teen series “Schooled” on Ndani TV, and his debut feature film release in “I Do Not Come To You By Chance.” In “Afamefuna – An Nwa-Boi story,” he plays the lead role of the teen Afamefuna, who is placed under the tutelage of Odogwu by his mother to learn the intricacies of the business.

For Paul, stories are a reflection of his mind and that is why he is selective with the roles he plays. “I want to touch people’s lives and evoke emotions through my films. I want people to feel a certain type of way when they watch my films.” He says.

***

Please share your journey in acting and what inspired you to pursue it.

Acting wasn’t always my path. In school, I was more focused on science. However, I did enjoy watching stage plays during social nights. One turning point came when I filled in for a missing student in a school play. Even though acting sparked an interest, it wasn’t yet a calling.

As a child, I was known in my area as the “little boy who talks.”I also had some acting experience. I remember filming alongside Desmond Eliot and Rita Dominic. They played a couple and I played their kid. My parents, however, didn’t see acting in my future. Years later, after secondary school, and while waiting for admission, I found myself creating comedy skits. Briefly, I considered becoming a comedian.

Around 2017/18, I collaborated with friends on comedy skits near Unilag. I discovered my passion for creating content that I enjoyed watching. This passion led me to filmmaking, with acting as one aspect. To hone my skills, I attended the AFRIFF training program and met Hilda Dokubo, who became my acting coach. I also enrolled in film schools. Now, after many auditions, my acting career is just beginning.

You’ve been acting for a while now. What’s a standout memory from your career that makes you smile when you look back?

There are many moments from my early days that make me wonder how desperate I was. One that sticks out is from when I was 17 or 18. A friend told me about a web series opportunity, and I sent in an audition tape for a bit part as a client in a barber shop. It wasn’t much, but for #5000, I was there at 6:30 am ready to go, even though filming was in Magodo Shangisha, far from my home in Apapa.

Filming dragged on for hours, and I was battling a fever, but I was determined to see it through. It was my first shot after all. Plus, I got to meet Okey Uzoeshi, who’s become a big brother to me in the industry. We finally wrapped around 10 pm. I was worried about facing my parents, but that whole experience shaped me. It showed me the demanding nature of filmmaking, but more importantly, it didn’t discourage me. I enjoyed the experience. That, and the 5000 naira and contract I got, are what I remember most. It was a tough but unforgettable experience that prepared me for the industry.

It also prepared me for more stressful jobs. Surprisingly, that was the first and last time I played an extra. Ever since I’ve focused on leading roles. Although I’m selective with the roles I play, it’s because I believe stories are a reflection of my mind. I want to touch people’s lives and evoke emotions through my films.

How did you prepare for your role in Afamefuna?

Before Afamefuna, my most Igbo-heavy film was “I Do Not Come to You by Chance.” It was my second Igbo role but with way more dialogue than my first. These two projects prepared me perfectly for Afamefuna in two ways: 1. Leading role experience, and 2. Sharpened Igbo language skills. By the time I got the Afamefuna script, it felt natural, thanks to those experiences. That’s the beauty of film – each project builds on the last.

Afamefuna was also lucky because of the cast. Actors like Chuks Joseph and Kanayo O. Kanayo were fantastic teammates. We’d discuss scenes beforehand, with Kanayo even explaining the backstory leading up to them. We talked about the “nwa boys” and the Igbo apprenticeship system. The talented cast and director, Kayode Kasum, who was open to questions and helped me understand my lines, scenes, and role, all made a big difference.

A post shared by Paul Nnadiekwe (@paulnnadiekwe)

Is there a specific actor who has influenced your approach to acting?

Absolutely. Christian Bale inspires me. He completely transforms for each role, becoming a different person every time. That’s something I admire because some actors just play themselves onscreen. I, like Bale, believe in changing my appearance to embody the character. It helps me truly step into their skin.

Discipline is another key for me, and Bale exemplifies that. He’ll gain or lose weight to fit the role. It reflects my belief that challenges lead to better art. Bale embodies this dedication, and that’s what I strive for in my career – to constantly push boundaries and avoid stereotypes. Variety and fresh storytelling bring me the most satisfaction.

For confidence and character ownership, Denzel Washington is my idol. He commands the screen with an unmatched aura. He’s like the Beyonce of acting. I study how he inhabits his characters and try to bring that same level of ownership to my roles.

A concrete example of how I draw inspiration is from my work on “Everything Scatter.” It was my first lead role and a demanding one at that. To prepare, I watched films like “Grown-ish” and “Equalizer” which had similar scenes. This is how I tap into inspiration to grow as an actor.

“I Do Not Come To You By Chance” was a big hit. What was it like working alongside actors like Genevieve Nnaji and Blossom Chukwjekwu? How did you prepare for your role?

Landing the role for “I Do Not Come To You By Chance” was a funny story. The audition script had Igbo lines, and I sent it to a friend for pronunciation help. Her brother surprisingly recognised them from the book. I immediately paused the audition process to read the novel. Understanding the story beforehand proved invaluable during the second audition with a new scene.

Meeting the A-list cast at the table read was nerve-wracking, especially when Genevieve Nnaji entered the room. But during my screen test, she offered incredible advice. She pointed out that while I delivered my lines well, I wasn’t truly reacting to my fellow actors. This was a major acting breakthrough for me. The entire cast was inspiring, especially Blossom Chukwjekwu and Jennifer Eliogu. I fed off their energy. Whatever emotion they needed to show, they did not hold it back. I gained experience from that set of different people. It was like a training ground for me more than anything.

Apart from “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” what upcoming roles are you excited about?

I’m particularly excited about “Everything Scatter.” This film by Jade Osiberu, is coming out at a perfect time considering the current economic hardship in the country. It will be a powerful voice for the people, expressing what’s in our hearts.

Beyond its social message, it’s a fantastic film and my first major project. Jade jokingly told me this year that people might think “I Do Not Come To You By Chance” was my breakthrough, but she “found me first.” During the audition, I knew I was up against established actors, but she chose me based on my previous tape and the audition itself. It felt like fate. This project aligns perfectly with the kind of stories I want to tell, so it’s a dream come true.

What’s the most interesting thing about being born on a leap day?

There are two things I find most interesting. First, it’s a special date, like a birthday with extra attention. Second, people’s reactions are priceless. They try to do the math and figure out your actual age.

What has been consistent for you throughout your film career?

Growth. Every project brings growth in experience, knowledge, and craft, which builds confidence and extends to other areas of my life.

What projects are you working on next?

As an actor, there are things in the works, but details are under wraps. In the meantime, I’m focusing on self-improvement, taking courses on filmmaking and the business of film.

Nwakaego Ihenacho Ogbaro professionally known as Ego is not new to the entertainment scene. For millennials who grew up jamming to Lagbaja’s music in the late 90s and early 00s, Ego’s vocals are unforgettable, especially on hits like “Konko Below,” “Nothing For You,” and the soulful “Never Far Away” amongst many other songs.

The singer-turned-actress now stars in “Wura,” a Showmax Nigeria Original drama series, that tells the story of an ambitious and ruthless CEO of a gold mining industry who would stop at nothing to protect her company and those she loves.

She stars alongside Scarlet Gomez, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Martha EhinomeCarol King, Ray Adeka, Iremide Adeoye and Lanre Adediwura.

For International Women’s Month, we caught up with Ego, and she shares about her journey into acting so far, her character Iyabo Kuti, and what International Women’s Month means to her.

***

Many millennials and Gen Z grew up watching you sing, now you’re acting. How has the journey been so far?

The journey has been awesome. I have been acting for a while, in a few stage plays, and done TV. I have learnt a lot, and I’m still learning. I love singing and I still sing but I just wanted to explore acting, which I am equally passionate about, a bit more.

You play the role of Iyabo Kuti, a mother, a wife, a loyal friend and a woman of faith. Let’s talk about her. What are the qualities you admire about her?

What I admire about Iyabo Kuti is how protective she is of her family and being able to deal with them when they mess up. She sees the good in people and is ready to give them a second chance.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

Women are intelligent, resourceful, strong, sensitive etc…but are often pushed to the background. I believe that investing in women should start from the girl child, building a strong foundation, teaching valuable lessons, harnessing the good qualities, and as they grow up, putting them in positions where these qualities work best irrespective of their gender.

Who are some strong women (famous or not) who inspire you daily? Give them a loving shoutout in case they read this.

There are many women I look up to (famous or not). Strong hardworking women inspire me. She could be a business mogul or a woman selling on the street. The tenacity to keep going against all odds is something I truly admire. I salute every one of you! One woman I will mention though is my mum. She is fierce!

Any advice for other women out there, especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the film industry?

My advice would be to make sure you are good at your craft. Keep improving, keep practising and it is never too late to start.

If you could give a real-life Iyabo Kuti advice, what piece of advice would you give her?

I would advise her to take a step back to study people and take their words with a pinch of salt. Don’t be so gullible.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

Not just in Nollywood, but in general. Women should be treated with respect and be chosen for positions because they are actually qualified and should be paid accordingly. To stop being overlooked because “she is a woman and can’t do it as well as a man.” To have round table discussions for better understanding.

From singing on MTN Project Fame West Africa to entertaining audiences in the Big Brother house and now a Nollywood star, Bisola Aiyeola‘s journey is nothing short of impressive. Her versatility and talent shine through in every role she takes on.

In Flawsome,” a Showmax Nigeria Original series that explores the lives of four friends, Bisola plays Ifeyinwa, a hard-working heiress who spent all her life preparing to become the CEO of her father’s company after his demise, only to find out she isn’t her father’s chosen successor.

In the series, she acts alongside other friends: Ramat (Ini Dima-Okojie), Ivie (Sharon Ooja), and Dolapo (Enado Odigie). Together, they navigate their personal and professional lives while bound by the flawed yet unbreakable ties they share.

For International Women’s Month, Bisola shares more about her character Ifeyinwa, her real-life friendships with Sharon Ooja and Bimbo Ademoye, what she thinks of Women’s Month, and the songs that make her beautiful.

***

Hi Bisola! What were you up to on International Women’s Day?

Nothing, I was working.

In ‘Flawsome,’ you play Ifeyinwa, a woman who faces challenges in her career. For women who find themselves in similar situations in their career journey, what piece of advice would you have for them?

A good support system is important. Thankfully, she has that support from her friends and sisters in Flawsome. Seeking advice on how to deal with issues like this, if it’s possible, talk to HR especially if you’re timid in the office.

But if you’re a boss, it requires a lot of inward thinking, and having a good community and support system. No journey to the top is easy so that might just be one of those things that help you stay steadfast, to keep pushing and not let anyone stop your dream of attaining greatness.

Female friendships are a big theme in ‘Flawsome.’ What do you value most about your friendships with women?

My best friend is Sharon Ooja in real life. She’s a ray of sunshine. She brings so much into my life. She’s one of those people who no matter how down, and sad I am when I talk to her, illuminates me. Seeing her anytime always leaves me feeling better. Female friendships, especially like the one I share with her, are a joy to my life. It gives me joy. It gives me peace of mind knowing that I just have that person you can pour everything into.

She’s not the only person that’s close to me, I have other popular and not-so-popular friends who are my guys. There’s Bimbo Ademoye. I call her “aburo mi,” my younger sister. She’s also another person that I can go on and talk to without feeling like I have to guide or watch the things I say. Sometimes, with certain friendships, you’re afraid to express yourself to them because you don’t know how they’re going to receive it. But, with these women in my life, I’m an open book and they’re also open books with me. There’s this freedom I feel just sharing things with them. And it’s very important to have this. Again, it goes back to having a good supper system. No man is an island and I’m grateful for the support system that I have.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

I think it goes beyond commenting on social media, ‘yas queen’ ‘you go girl’ It goes beyond that. It starts as little as supporting the woman selling pepper down the road. You’re empowering that woman, you don’t know the journey that she’s on but just by your patronage with her, it’s helping her.

Your friends in business, you’re purchasing from them, you’re randomly posting about their businesses. You don’t have to wait until they tell you or beg you to share their businesses. Most times, you find out that your close friends rarely support you, your business or your journey or job. Strangers will do that more for you.

Now, we have to look inward and start with our little community. From your community of friends, be deliberate about ensuring that they’re growing, accelerating their progress and supporting them in any way you can.

Even if it’s something you don’t use, you can just share. Tell your friends to another friend that this person does this. Mention their names in rooms where they’re not even there. It’s those little drops of water that make a mighty ocean. The ripple effects can come from things like this. Those are the tiny ways that I think you can help women.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

Even better than what we have now! I’m very proud of the women in film. Women are dominating so many spaces in the film industry right now, this era that I’m in. I feel like there’s so much more we can do.

Now, let’s embrace more collaboration. It’s not a competition between women and men. We need more collaborations and healthy competition and seeing that as a whole, we’re doing it for Nollywood, not for our individual and personal gains.

When the world gets to experience Nollywood, they don’t differentiate between a “woman’s Nollywood” or a “man’s Nollywood”, it is Nollywood they experience. So a lot of collaborations and giving women more chances than what we’re getting now. With more collaborations and healthy competition, Nollywood will keep better.

Three songs you’d add to a “Beautiful Women” playlist for International Women’s Month?

Eledumare” by Teledalase, “I am Woman” by Emmy Meli, and “This Girl Is On Fire” by Alicia Keys.

Ayoola Ayolola  is a highly regarded actor of his generation, with a string of successful projects including “Skinny Girl in Transit,” “The Men’s Club,” “WAR,” and “If I Am President.” But behind the talent lies a remarkable story: an escape from Kano with his family, countless reality show auditions, and moments of hunger that led him to embrace acting when music wasn’t working.

On this episode of “With Chude,” Ayolola gets candid with host Chude Jideonwo about fatherhood, his Project Fame journey, and his remarkable shift from music to acting.

See excerpts below:

“I felt to myself, what if I just end it right now? You know, nobody is going to miss me. I was actually in the middle of the road, and when you’re calculating when to cross, I deliberately miscalculated so that I would be hit. Maybe this is a good idea, but then I think the fear of ‘if you do it, you go to hell, is it true?’ I don’t want to go to hell. Maybe it’s a bad idea, and then something happened that maybe picked up the pace or slowed down a little more, and the car just brushed me. I still fell off the road, and some people came to help me up, not knowing I tried to, you know. And I think in my case, the resolve to never try it again was the fear of it happening, so after that, my orientation about suicide and depression changed because I used to say, ‘Why would you want to do that? Are you crazy?’

After that time, I started to understand how that thing is more medical and more spiritual than we think. It takes over you, you don’t know. It’s not the decision you’re rightfully making at that time.
Anyway, all of that happened, and I look back now. I look at the very handsome young man, and I’m like, really? This is what I was about to miss. This is whose life I was about to destroy by my actions. By the action I was about to take, that I was going to take blindly, this little boy would have been made fatherless.”

Oluchi Amajuoyi

Adanna takes centre stage in the Showmax Nigeria original series, Cheta’M. As the eldest daughter of a council member and second in command among the Umuade women, she is depicted as the courageous protagonist. Oluchi Amajuoyi embodies the role of Adanna so well, capturing the innocence and naivety expected of a maiden of her age and time.

“Wearing the shoes of Adanna was indeed empowering, I felt stretched mentally and physically. Portraying her ability to fight for something so abstract sheds more light on how resilient the mind of a focused woman can be,” Oluchi says in an exclusive interview with BellaNaija.

In the series, she stars alongside an impressive mix of upcoming acts and Nollywood OGs, including Ruby Okezie, Kalu Ikeagwu, and Nonso Odogwu.

For International Women’s Month, we caught up with Oluchi to discuss her role in “Cheta’M,” a series that revolves around Adanna and Nnanna, who share a once-in-a-lifetime kind of love and fight against all odds to stay together. In this interview, she talks about the women who inspire her and her perspective on the significance of International Women’s Month. Plus, she reveals the first song that’ll make her “Strong Women” playlist for this month.

***

Hi Oluchi, What were you up to on International Women’s Day?

Nothing too busy. I was just creating memories with the wonderful women God put in my life.

You play the role of Adanna in Cheta M. It is admirable how she embodies empowered female characters, especially as the courageous protagonist and second in command among the Umuada women. What was it like to step into her shoes?

Adanna is courageous indeed. However, I believe her courage stems from watching her mother who is the second in command among the Umuada and other brave women in Mgberi, and also picking subtle lessons on how to stand for what she believes to be right. Wearing the shoes of Adanna was indeed empowering, I felt stretched mentally and physically. Portraying her ability to fight for something so abstract sheds more light on how resilient the mind of a focused woman can be.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

This is rejuvenating. In a nutshell, I call it “Hope.” Finally, the true essence and influence of a woman is that she has the hope to reach her full potential. Women are unique and special by design. Projecting their uniqueness in its full strength without comparison is likened to the parable that says “A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” Women are a huge light to the world and I anticipate more women taking off their shades that represent various limiting factors and allowing their light to shine for the benefit of all.

Who are some strong women (famous or not) who inspire you in your everyday life? Give them a loving shoutout in case they read this.

I consider myself highly blessed in this regard. I have got both physically and mentally strong women in my corner. I want to appreciate my mother Stella Amajuoyi, my sister Cynthia Amajuoyi, and my beautiful friends: Kemi Adeshakin, Ruth Ndupu, Lulu Okonkwo, and Jasmine Ekumah. You guys are my rock and my blessing, be sure that I remind myself of this fact every single day! I love you!

Any advice for other women out there? Especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the film industry.

Do it afraid. You will be afraid for most of the journey. I look to Jesus for strength and I don’t forget to do it afraid. That’s what I tell myself every day and it has brought me thus far and by God’s grace, it’ll take me even farther.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

Honestly, I want us to tell stories of the incomparable strength of women. I want women to be appreciated for their intense and unique strength without bias. That’s the kind of Nollywood I want to be a part of – one where women are given roles and recognition based on their hard work, without hesitation. Above all, I want women to be proud of themselves, we’re awesome! Soon enough, the world will know.

Imagine you’re making a “Strong Women” playlist for International Women’s Month. What’s the first song you’d add, and why?

Girl on fire” by Alicia keys. The song says all I’ve been trying to say. It’s in the lyrics. “Bright shiny, fire-burning design called women!” Lol.

In “Wura,” a Showmax Nigeria original drama series, Martha Ehinome plays Tumininu “Tumi” Kuti, a defiant daughter who stands against all odds in the face of adversity. She stars alongside Yomi Fash Lanso, Carol King, Scalert Gomez, Ego Iheancho, and Ropo Ewenla.

Martha Ehinome wears many creative hats. She is a trained actor from the Department of Theatre Arts, at the University of Ibadan, majoring in acting and speech. Aside from acting, she enjoys photography, singing and exploring new places. She was also in Africa Magic’s telenovela “Riona” as ‘Esanjumi’ and in “Dear Bayo” for which she received two BON (Best of Nollywood) award nominations.

For International Women’s Month, she talks about her role in “Wura” – a series about the secret lives of Wura Amoo-Adeleke, a ruthless iron lady – in an exclusive interview with BellaNaija. She also talks about the women who inspire her and her perspective on the significance of International Women’s Month.

***

Hi Martha! What were you up to on International Women’s Day?

This may probably be a disappointing reply, but I was indoors all day.

It was very nice seeing the celebration of women on my timeline though; women lifting each other and putting out a lot of positivity.

You play the role of Tumi in “Wura.” Let’s talk about her. What are the qualities you admire about her?

From the start of the series, we see her in a situation where she inherits so much responsibility. She has a very determined mind. She works hard and holds her head high wherever she is, irrespective of her social status. She exudes strength and integrity and that’s very admirable.

The theme of International Women’s Day is Investing in Women: Accelerate Progress. It’s about supporting women to reach their full potential. What does that mean to you?

Thankfully, some women are achieving great things despite the limitations placed on women. Unfortunately, not all women are fortunate enough to have those stories. There are stereotypes and narratives that have put too many women in boxes, limiting them.

The theme of this year ‘Investing in Women’ is basically removing roadblocks, pouring into them, supporting them to reach their full potential, and giving them room to bloom.

Who are some strong women (famous or not) who inspire you in your everyday life? Give them a loving shoutout in case they read this

I’ll start with women who every day, are fighting whatever system it is that’s trying to hold them down; whether it is in their workplaces, their families or out on the streets. Those women are my heroes.

More pointedly, Jade Osiberu is a woman I absolutely respect for the quality of her work and all that she has put in in the course of her journey. I have also come to deeply admire Issa Rae for her courage in doing things for herself whether or not the world was ready to give her a platform.

Any advice for other women out there? Especially those aspiring to pursue a career in the film industry

My advice would be to come prepared. Not necessarily because they’re female but because it takes hard work, perseverance, consistency, and great love for the craft to really hang around. It’s not all glitz and glam.

That being said, I will also enthusiastically urge them to come. There is always space for creativity and newness in any industry.

Did anything special happen while filming “Wura” that made you feel even more powerful as an actress, especially when bringing Tumi’s journey to life?

Tumi went through a very wide range of emotions as so many things happened to her through her journey in the series. It’s the widest scope of emotions I have ever had to play with a singular character, so that was fun.

I’m happy I was able to pour so much into her and be true to who she was as much as I could. So, yes, I believe it further sharpened my skills and enriched me more as an actor.

What progress would you like to see Nollywood make towards gender equality in the coming years?

I would like to see more stories correcting biases around women’s realities. We have that power as artists, and it must be aggressively used to shift people’s mindsets and better society.
