Did you know that globally, only 2 in 10 cybersecurity professionals is a woman? Additionally, in Africa, just 9% of the cybersecurity workforce is female, despite the population being evenly distributed across genders.

The primary barriers to diversity, viewed through the lens of gender, are belief, access, and representation. Addressing these challenges is the CyberGirls Fellowship’s mission—a transformative initiative dedicated to bridging this divide and empowering young girls and women to become leaders in cybersecurity.

The CyberGirls Fellowship stands as one of Africa’s largest free cybersecurity training and mentorship program for young women. Through an intensive 8-month training program, participants receive free cybersecurity training and mentorship opportunities, positioning them to pursue global opportunities in the field. Read more about the CyberGirls Fellowship here.

Christine, a beneficiary of the 2024 cohort of the CyberGirls Fellowship, faced financial constraints in her pursuit of upskilling. She had to save up 10 months of her bursary money to invest in her first cybersecurity certification. For her, this fellowship represents a gateway to achieving her dreams of securing a role in cybersecurity despite her socioeconomic status.

Since its inception in 2021, the CyberGirls Fellowship program has transformed the lives of 1000 individuals across 3 cohorts, opening doors to opportunities that were once beyond reach. Consider the story of Abigail, who was only 18 when she trained with CyberGirls to become a skilled web application penetration tester. Today, Abigail works for a US-based company, breaking barriers and shattering glass ceilings, paving the way for future generations of women in cybersecurity.

Similarly, Kachipa, who once worked as a waitress at a pizza restaurant in South Africa, has, through the program’s support and guidance, mastered the intricacies of cybersecurity and discovered her innate potential as a leader.

Today, she is a cloud security analyst, and her income, which has increased by 450%, enables her to provide a better future for herself and her family. Kachipa serves as an inspiration to countless other young women, proving that with determination and support, anything is possible.

These stories offer just a glimpse of the impact CyberGirls has had on individuals and communities in Africa. However, as remarkable as the CyberGirls Fellowship has been, challenges have arisen in securing the funding required to run our 2024 cohort, which aims to empower 500 women and girls from 27 African counties.

If you had the opportunity to help a young woman pursue her dreams of a career in cybersecurity, would you make it happen with your donation? You can be a catalyst for change by supporting the CyberGirls Fellowship 2024 cohort. Your contribution will enable young girls to access life-changing opportunities and embark on a journey towards a rewarding career in cybersecurity.

Here’s how you can make a difference:

  1. Make a one-time donation of $200 to sponsor a CyberGirl through our 8-month training program.
  2. Set up a recurring payment of $50 per month for 4 months to provide sustained support to our participants.
  3. Donate any amount you can.

Click here to donate now! Your donation through the CyberSafe Foundation is not just an investment in individual lives; it’s an investment in a more inclusive and secure future for us all.

Please note: Your donation is tax-deductible if you live in the United States of America.

There’s much work to be done, and support is needed to transform the potential of 500 young women across Africa into today’s cyber talent and tomorrow’s cybersecurity leaders. Join to #MakeHerCyberDreamComeTrue.

Tyla is not interested in the “I can’t believe I’m here role.” She worked hard to reach here. “I never had an example of how to be an African pop star. So I was literally shooting in the dark. And I know people think it came out of nowhere and we are just industry plants. But it’s been years of work, years of developing, of falling, of messing up, of dreaming, sitting up for hours and hours watching YouTube videos…” she says.

The South African music star came into the limelight with her hit song “Water” released in July 2023 and has not looked back since then. The song took over social media with its water-pouring TikTok dance and amassed a monthly Spotify stream of 29 million. This year, the song won her first Grammy Award in the Best African Music Performance category. Unfazed by comparisons to Rihanna, Tyla considers it a compliment, acknowledging Rihanna’s iconic status while asserting her own identity: “I’m my own artist. I’m Tyla.”

In this cover interview with Cosmopolitan Magazine, Tyla talks about almost everything, from her family background, the immense success of her breakout hit “Water,” representing African Music on the global stage, a recent tour cancellation due to injury, her musical influences and more.

Read excerpts from the interview:

On her hit song “Water” and how she knew it would be big

“I recorded it in a bedroom. I never thought, This song is going to blow up. And then I started performing it and seeing everyone singing every word. And I knew it was something bigger than what we thought. People from everywhere are listening to it and dancing to it, no matter their age. There’s babies, there’s old people. I just love that it’s an African sound that is so universal.”

On how her life has changed since the release of the song

“So many things have changed. I still live in South Africa, but I was able to move my parents, my family. Now they’re in a safer area. My family came to Dubai with me. I was able to bring them to Europe. I’m able to show my parents the world at this age, you know? Years back, I was crying on my parents’ bed, saying, “Can I sing, please? Can I just do this? I don’t want to go to university.” Now they are watching me win and they are seeing plaques and posters. The first time my parents got to be in America, they saw their daughter win a Grammy.”

On her back injury and cancelling the tour

“Yeah, unfortunately, I had to postpone the tour. Obviously, I wanted to do all the shows, but it didn’t really make sense considering the injury and the recommendations from the doctor. I’ll be back on it very soon, and I will be giving my Tygers the best show ever. I just need to slow down a bit more and just be easy on myself. I’m still recovering. At least I have medicine that helps ease the pain. It sucks, but I know God’s going to bring me out of it.”

On how she creates a balance

I have a really good team and I have really good people around me that are from home, so I’m always reminded where I’m from. And my family. I’m very much grounded. I feel like the way we grew up, we are playful and do not take things too seriously. But also, God gives me peace always. No matter what happens, I know that eventually, it’s going to be the way God wants it to be.”

Laced with moments of warmth and humour that will make you laugh and cry along with her, Elsie’s journey is a testament to resilience, love, and the importance of maintaining hope even in the face of adversity.

“Autistic: Leaping over walls while living with autism” is not just another tale; it’s a beacon of knowledge and empowerment. Elsie provides verifiable information and effective tools for anyone dealing with autism, granting them the power to navigate the challenging terrain with confidence.

Particularly relevant for African families navigating the complexities of autism, the book offers Elsie’s personal experiences alongside insights on navigating resources and fostering inclusion within African communities. It provides practical guidance on accessing support services and creating a more inclusive environment for autistic individuals.

The book serves as a comprehensive guide in helping people living with Autism aspire and actualise their dreams regardless of the society they live in. It provides valuable insights on navigating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to build a society that embraces Autism. It highlights scenes of coping with a child living with Autism and still being a normal parent living a happy and balanced life.

With its wealth of information, readers gain a deeper understanding of how to access a society that values and accommodates the diverse needs of individuals living with autism, creating a more harmonious and inclusive world for everyone.

Within the pages of this captivating book, Elsie’s indomitable spirit shines as she recounts her battle and ultimate victory in raising her autistic son, Joshua. The news of his diagnosis at the tender age of five shook Elsie to her core twenty years ago.

Yet, armed with unwavering determination, she fearlessly confronted every challenge that accompanied caring for a child with autism. While doubts initially clouded her mind, Joshua has proven time and again that his potential knows no bounds.

Today, he is a beacon of inspiration, possessing a remarkable knack for self-help skills, an unwavering passion for music, and unmatched talent in the artistic realm. His numerous victories in art competitions and his mesmerizing performance at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall, where he showcased his self-taught piano skills, leave no doubt of his extraordinary abilities.

Joshua’s zest for life extends beyond his achievements; he wholeheartedly embraces his role in assisting with household duties and radiating contagious happiness. From school trips to cherished family vacations, he relishes every moment that life offers.

In the gripping narrative, the book details a pivotal period as Elsie and her family bid farewell to Hamburg, cautiously making their way back to their homeland after a seemingly ill-fated vacation abroad. Little did they know that a moment of chaos awaited them at the airport, when a vigilant security official singled out a stunned Joshua, sparking a whirlwind of tension, later making him become overwhelmed by the unexpected situation.

As fear gripped her heart as a mother, they valiantly navigated this unexpected ordeal, emerging triumphant against all odds.

Elsie’s memoir delves deep into the challenges she encountered during Joshua’s early diagnosis, delving into the isolation that plagued her family, particularly as a minority within their community, grappling with the stigma surrounding disabilities. Through her heartfelt revelations, Elsie offers solace and guidance to other families navigating similar paths.

She openly shares the invaluable therapeutic techniques she employed to enhance her son’s growth. These simple practices, such as fostering eye contact, incorporating swimming activities, and employing basketball exercises to instil the essence of taking turns, provided vital stepping stones on Joshua’s path toward progress.

The book also includes the perspective of Joshua’s older brother, offering a glimpse into the unique challenges and rewards of siblinghood within an autistic family. The brother shares his experiences of growing up alongside Joshua, highlighting the complexities and joys of their sibling relationship.

Bittersweet emotions flood his narrative as he recounts their separation during his departure for university, confronting the heart-wrenching truth that he would be leaving Joshua behind. The weight of this separation and the uncertainty of their mother’s ability to single-handedly cater to Joshua’s needs added to his anguish. However, the brotherly love shared among them, cultivated through years of growing side-by-side, remained resolute.

Nigerian social media entrepreneur Clara Chizoba Kronborg has broken the world record for the longest interviewing marathon.

For fifty-five hours and twenty-four seconds, on a docked yacht in the Spanish city of Marbella, Clara interviewed ninety people from various backgrounds, including politicians, business owners, content creators, actors, real estate agents and many others. The conversations revolved around their journeys to success

For Clara, her motivation was to amplify the voices of hardworking women, “This record attempt was about bringing together diverse individuals, sharing their inspiring narratives, and forging meaningful connections on a global scale. I am committed to amplifying voices, particularly those of hardworking women, and using their stories to inspire others facing similar challenges,” she explained.

Like all ‘longest marathon’ record attempts, Clara received five-minute breaks after each hour to nap, change clothes, or use the restroom.

The marathon was not without some challenges. According to Clara, her voice became “very hoarse and rusty” but she avoided losing it by drinking lots of water.

She also suffered neck and back aches, which her team relieved with massages during her rest breaks. She also struggled with sleepiness at multiple points but found renewed energy with each new interview subject and their unique story.

Clara’s impressive feat surpasses the previous record of 37 hours and 44 minutes, set by Rob Oliver (USA) in 2022. This record-breaking achievement isn’t the only recent example of Nigerians excelling on the world stage. Last week, chess master Tunde Onakoya, founder of Chess In Slum Africa, completed a remarkable 60-hour chess marathon to raise $1 million for children’s education across Africa.

Ten years ago, Nigeria made history, as Port Harcourt assumed its tenure as UNESCO World Book Capital, beating 8 contenders, including Oxford.

Rainbow Book Club founder, Koko Kalango, with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka (who gave the keynote address), at the opening ceremony of Port Harcourt World Book Capital 2014 on April 23rd (World Book & Copyright Day)

A decade after, the Rainbow Book Club, Project Managers of the Port Harcourt World Book Capital programme, are launching two(2) exciting initiatives;

  • Talking Books Africa is a monthly, virtual, live conversation with authors which debuted with the award-winning Chibundu Onuzo as a guest.
  • R.O.A.R. Africa series (biographies of notable Africans for young readers), beginning with Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, who turns 90 this year. This initiative is a partnership with UNESCO Paris.

Today, April 23rd 2024, Strasbourg, France assumes the World Book Capital title.

The ‘Get Nigeria Reading Again’ campaign, which the Rainbow Book Club, kicked off with Chimamanda Adichie in 2005, played a significant role in Port Harcourt’s nomination as World Book Capital 2014.

From 2008, the Garden City Literary Festival (later named the Port Harcourt Book Festival) drew writers, artists, book lovers, other creatives and culture connoisseurs from across Nigeria, Africa and other continents to the city of Port Harcourt.

“This festival was described by This Day publication as ‘arguably the biggest of its kind in sub-Saharan Africa’ was sponsored by the Rivers State Govt. and hosted by the Rainbow Book Club.” – Rainbow Book Club

At the opening ceremony of Port Harcourt’s year-long World Book Capital tenure, Wole Soyinka, in his keynote address, spotlighted the importance of the book in national development and the threat to education, highlighting the plight of the Chibok girls who had been kidnapped from their school two weeks earlier. Obi Ezekwesili, former education minister, made the call to bring back the girls, sparking off an international campaign for education.

Nigeria’s musicians (now Grammy award winner Burna Boy, Timi Dakolu, MI, Waje, Yemi Alade and Nosa) lent their voices to the reading campaign as they rendered the PH World Book Capital theme song.

The dozen programmes of the World Book Capital year included 200 book clubs set up in schools, the establishment of a 350-seater library sponsored by Shell, as well as stories written by children from the 23 Local Govt. Areas of Rivers State and the 36 states of Nigeria, about their communities and published in books.

Hay Festival and Rainbow Book Club collaborated on the ‘Africa 39’ project that selected and celebrated 39 of Africa’s most promising writers under the age of 40. Other international partners on this project included the Caine Prize and PEN International. In that year, Port Harcourt World Book Capital exhibited at the Cape Town Book Fair, the London Book Fair and the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Other partners, who are working with Rainbow to spread the joy of reading include Nigeria LNG and TOTALENERGIES.

The Rainbow Book Club pioneered getting notable people to read to children to stimulate their interest in books. Readers have included VP Osinbajo, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Soyinka, Former Governors Babatunde Fashola and Rotimi Amaechi, Ministers Dora Akunyili, Henry Odein Ajumogobia, Emeka Anyaoku, Burna Boy, etc.

The creative and passionate Rainbow Book Club team is led by its founder, Koko Kalango, whose work in social development, earned her a national award in 2014.

This episode of the Teju Babyface Deep Dive Podcast is nothing short of inspiring. It is all about Bayo Omoboriowo’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming the official photographer for former president Muhammadu Buhari.

Born into modest circumstances, the photojournalist and documentary photographer recalls selling ‘pure water’ after school hours and sleeping on bare bunks in the hostels of the University of Lagos. Despite facing numerous challenges, he never dreamed of becoming who he is today.

On becoming the official photographer of the former president, Omoboriowo shares how he wasn’t initially invited to political rallies but instead took the bold step of inviting himself. Traveling long and perilous distances interstate, often at his own expense, he pursued his passion with unwavering determination and hope.

Tunde Onakoya has completed a 60-hour chess marathon, aiming to set a new Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon. For 60 hours in the heart of New York’s Times Square, he battled opponent after opponent, fueled by determination and a mission to raise $1 million for children’s education in Africa. “Doing this for the dreams of millions of children across Africa without access to education,” the chess master and founder of Chess In Slum Africa says. For this cause, Tunde initially aimed to play for 58 consecutive hours.

But after playing for 58 hours and breaking the record, he pushed further for 2 more hours, making it 60 hours. “We’re pushing to 60 hours guys. We’re not stopping yet. Let’s keep going.” he said.

The current Guinness World record for the longest chess marathon stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds and was set by Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad of Norway on November 11, 2018.

As typical of the Nigerian supportive spirit, supporters from New York’s Nigerian community, including Afrobeats stars Davido and Adekunle Gold showed up at the Times Square to cheer Tunde. Back home in Nigeria, the nation rallied behind him as they watched him conquer the record on Twitch, with former vice president of Nigeria and current vice president Yemi Osinbajo and Kashim Shettima offering their public support.

“Let the dynamic energy of Times Square amplify the greatness that you, a proud Nigerian, bring to the chessboard. We’re all behind you—show the world the strength and determination you’re made of,” the former vice president said.

“Lagos is for you as you attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon at Times Square in the heart of New York, ” said Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State.

Today, Time Magazine released its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world, the 2024 TIME100. Among this year’s members are inspiring prominent figures of African descent across various fields, including Nigerian singer-songwriter Burna Boy, the president of Kenya, William Ruto and South African rugby player, Siya Kolis. The list also recognises social entrepreneur and author from Kenya, Kennedy Odede, Ghanaian-Scottish architect, Lesley Naa Norle Lokko, Ugbadian LGBT advocate, Frank Mugisha, and Congolese human rights activist Julienne Lusenge.

This prestigious list also pairs each member with a guest contributor TIME selects to write about them.

Grammy-winning musician, Angélique Kidjo, who collaborated with Burna Boy on her song “Do Yourself, praises his role in elevating African music globally. She wrote, “Ten years ago or so, when young African musicians would come to me for advice, I would tell them, “You don’t need to mimic American artists! The world needs the amazing richness and beauty of our traditional African music and our culture… Burna Boy has made that vision a global reality. Inspired by the fantastic drums of Nigerian folk music, and studied in the craft of the great African singer-songwriters, he follows in the footsteps of Fela Kuti—the internationally celebrated Afrobeats artist and activist. Burna Boy’s deeply original flow and his signature groove have conquered the world with an impressive series of firsts: in 2023, he became the first African artist to sell out a U.S. stadium, and in 2024, he became the first Afrobeats artist to sing at the Grammys.

Burna Boy, paired with 21 Savage, expresses his admiration for artists who stay true to their convictions and commends 21 Savage’s authenticity and relatable approach to rap. He said, “I trust my gut when it comes to my music and collaborations, and I find myself naturally drawn to artists like 21 Savage—those who remain grounded in their convictions and consistently defy the constraints imposed upon them. Like 21, I know what it’s like to rise above challenging beginnings, and it makes his success all that much more remarkable. Throughout his work—including on his newest album, American Dream, which opens with a reflection by his mother on their immigration story—21 maintains an authenticity that resonates deeply. His approach to rap is refreshingly genuine; he speaks to us in a relatable way, effortlessly navigating the complexities of the genre. Whether he tackles weighty subjects or offers moments of levity, his delivery remains compelling. I have recently had the privilege of sharing one of my most significant milestones with 21, performing with him at the Grammys. I’m excited to witness the greater evolution of his artistry and the impact he continues to make on the world stage.”

Among those listed in the TIME100 and who also graced the four international covers of the TIME100 issue are actor Taraji P. Henson, singer-songwriter Dua Lipa, football quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and a leader of Russia’s opposition movement, Yulia Navalnaya

When Lade asked Ink Balogun, a pioneer in Nigeria’s digital media industry who has led Aso Ebi Bella (asoebibella.com) since 2017 and recently launched the indigenous 234 Games (234games.co):  “As the leader of a successful online community, we know that you see a lot of GenZ and millennial women challenging traditional narratives of success. What are you seeing now in areas like entrepreneurship and social impact?”

She said:

I’m just really happy to celebrate Nigerian women, our resilience, our focus, and our determination are unmatched. We are top-tier! We set trends that the whole world follows and adopts eventually.

In the space of entrepreneurship, I see women of different ages find new outlets for creativity and that is really inspiring. I mean look at Veekee James, Hilda Baci, and I don’t even think they are 30… We have new voices coming out everyday.

Also for older people, if you feel your time has passed, that is not true, there is always time to reinvent the wheel and to pick up your inspiration. Nigerian women inspire me because we are setting the trend, we are the prototype!

When Clara Chizoba Kronborg, an award-winning media & social entrepreneur was asked to share some strategies she has used to overcome societal expectations and achieve success on her own terms seeing that she’s broken barriers in terms of media ownership, she said:

First of all, success is very subjective, it’s about being very authentic and as a Nigerian/African woman living in the diaspora, where you have to really own who you are 100% to be able to thrive and be able to have a strong voice and express yourself in the way that it should be.

How have I done that? It’s honestly by being myself and realising who I am: who is Clara? what’s your purpose, and what are you put on this earth to do? The moment I realised that, I knew that the only way for me to navigate that is to stay true to my person so that I don’t have to apologise when I walk into a room. I need you to see that this is me, this is all of me, and you’d take it as it comes.

The moment I embraced my personality, it made things a lot easier. I also leveraged networking to be honest and when you are authentic, people know when you are fake, people can see through your boo ha ha… Build a strong reliable network!

For the media work that I do, I’d honestly say it’s the team and the work they put in. I’ve been able to build a strong team who believe in my vision and I cannot thank them enough for it… Everything that I’ve built and leveraged so far I got from being true to myself, knowing who I am, and just holding fast to it.

When Joyce Jacob, a renowned Celebrity Makeup Artist with an eye for striking yet subtle makeup looks and the Director of Hair & Makeup for the 2nd season of Netflix‘s glamorous hit reality series YOUNG, FAMOUS & AFRICAN, was asked to share how she defines success for herself within the very diverse and saturated beauty industry, seeing that her career path highlights the need for artistic expression and career branding, she said:

For me, success is getting to the place where you are comfortable. When I say comfortable, I mean comfortable in your craft, comfortable in your talent, and comfortable in what you have to offer to the world…

Success is when you don’t have to work too hard. You know, I don’t have to bend over backwards; when I don’t have to do clickbait… You can actually just sit in your talent, sit in craft, and be confident that the bookings are going to keep rolling in; you’re going to stay booked and busy, and you’re going to keep achieving your dreams, for me that is success.

And also not getting carried away, cause in my industry it is so easy to get carried away. I started over 10 years ago, 2009 to be specific… and the industry has grown so beautifully. It’s been a beautiful thing to see and you can get carried away…

Part of my success has just been staying true to myself and it’s the #1 advice I will give to anyone starting a business… Just stay true to yourself, stay true to your signature, stay true to your craft, and I promise you, you will be successful.

Your work at Aso Ebi Bella celebrates African culture, how can we use entrepreneurship and digital platforms to define success beyond traditional stereotypical metrics and integrate cultural identity and social impact into our goals and why we should do these things?

Authenticity is where you find yourself, uniqueness is where you find yourself, not echoing other people’s voices but finding your own.

…GenZ and Gen Alpha you have the benefit of “being African” being cool now. We (Millenials) didn’t have that… and honestly we suffered from streotypes (a lot of misrepresentation) and it really took us defining what we want.

When it comes to women specifically, I love what we’ve done because things like fashion and even cooking have been looked down on. After all, women provide these services for free.

We provide them as part of our energy and giving beauty and light to the world; but us being able to say “No, take us seriously, this is a business, this ties into our identity, this says something, this makes money, this provides inspiration,” is so important.

We’ve even seen designers from international runways pick one or two inspirations from us, and it’s not like we need that validation but it shows that we have a unique authentic voice to bring.

So finding your voice, having the discipline to streamline it into a business and run a team around it, and staying true to yourself and improving your craft is really key… You also have to evolve while staying true to yourself.

I think it’s really important and I’m inspired by what I see going on currently.

— Nkechi (Ink) Balogun

What are some of the biggest stereotypes you’ve encountered as a successful African woman and how have you defined success for yourself in light of these expectations?

The biggest stereotype and I think most women can relate to this is “Oh she’s successful, someone is bankrolling her, someone is behind her, etc”. It’s just always someone else other than the person that’s truly behind the craft and that for me is the number one stereotype.

People don’t believe that it can be you all alone and I don’t know why this stereotype is always there but it’s disgusting and it’s false. You’d be surprised at how much you can achieve by yourself if you truly just put your mind to what you want to do.

You are enough and you should believe that you are enough! You don’t need to have anyone bankrolling or sponsoring you.

— Joyce Jacob

Your Guinness World Record attempt highlights the power of perseverance, what message do you have for young women facing challenges on their path to success? You’ve also moved from country to country and travelled to over 30 countries which is amazing, how has perseverance played a role in all of these things and your breaking the barriers to success?

It’s easy to tell someone to persevere, “you have to persevere and keep going”, but it’s easier said than done.

First of all the Guinness World Record attempt, I didn’t just wake up overnight and want attempt to break a record interviewing 94 people for 55 hours non stop. It was the most insane thing I’ve ever done in my life and it’s still ongoing and we hope to bring the news to life soon. However, perseverance is a big key… but it’s easier said than done.

If you want to achieve something, you just have to wake up and you go from it because no one is coming to save you. If you want to do it, you have an idea, you have a concept, go for it!

… How it works for me: I have an idea, I send an email out, and if I don’t get a response after 24 hours, I will be knocking at your door. Also if you say no to me, that’s okay. If you say go and restructure and come back, I will restructure and I will come back. That’s the way it is.

I don’t take no for an answer. If it doesn’t work for us, that is okay, I move on to the next person… and if you say no, I knock on another door. I keep trying again because I know one day, somebody will see the vision and say yes and that person becomes one of the team. I keep finding and looking for the person who sees the vision of where I am heading to.

There’s no perseverance without you putting action into it, it’s okay if it gets hard, cry if you have to but don’t stay down, pick up yourself and move forward. You need to find a way to get to the next level, if it takes calling the person that helps you feel the fire, call them… Build your step-by-step action and keep going.

— Clara Chizoba Kronborg

Nemsia Films, in strategic collaboration with Evercare Hospital Lekki, proudly announces a transformative collaboration aimed at amplifying awareness about asthma and providing essential support to patients through the provision of 100 complimentary inhalers.

This initiative follows the resounding success of the cinematic masterpiece ‘Breath of Life’ on Prime Naija, a film written and directed by BB Sasore, the co-founder of Nemsia Films, starring and produced by Eku Edewor which recently garnered eleven AMVCA nominations, including Best Movie, Best Director, and Best Writing, underscoring its remarkable impact on Nigerian cinema.

Founder Nemsia Films, Derin Adeyokunnu

Asthma remains a pervasive chronic respiratory ailment affecting millions globally, with Nigeria bearing one of the highest prevalence rates in Africa. Despite its widespread impact, there persists a dearth of awareness and accessibility to critical medications such as inhalers, indispensable for effectively managing asthma symptoms.

The symbiotic collaboration between Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki is poised to cast a beacon on these pertinent issues by fostering awareness about asthma and extending support to 100 underprivileged patients through the provision of complimentary inhalers. Through this concerted campaign, both entities aspire to empower asthma patients, enabling them to reclaim agency over their health and enhance their overall quality of life.

We are profoundly enthused to unite with Evercare Hospital Lekki in effecting tangible change in the lives of asthma patients across Nigeria,” remarked Derin Adeyokunnu, Co-founder of Nemsia Films.

The resonance of ‘Breath of Life,’ written and directed by BB Sasore, exemplifies the potent role of narrative in catalyzing awareness of critical health issues. Our association with Evercare Hospital Lekki reaffirms our steadfast commitment to advancing this noble cause.

A notable highlight of ‘Breath of Life’ was the character Elijah, portrayed by Chimezie Imo, whose heartfelt and humorous depiction of asthma punctuated the movie with moments of comedy, adding depth and relatability to the narrative.

As part of the initiative, Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki will orchestrate the distribution drive for 100 complimentary inhalers. These initiatives will be hosted at the hospital’s premises in Lekki, Lagos, with a deliberate focus on extending assistance to individuals facing financial constraints in accessing inhalers.

We are delighted to collaborate with Nemsia Films in spotlighting asthma awareness and extending support to underserved patients through the provision of complimentary inhalers, remarked Dr. Ayoola Shonibare Chief Medical Officer, Evercare Hospital Lekki.

Asthma demands diligent management. At Evercare Hospital Lekki, we remain committed to transforming healthcare and improving the well-being of the communities we serve by ensuring equitable access to essential care and medications, fostering the well-being of every asthma patient.

Chief Business Officer, Evercare Hospital Lekki; Kehinde Oyesiku

The synergistic partnership between Nemsia Films and Evercare Hospital Lekki underscores the imperative of collective action in tackling public health imperatives. By amalgamating their respective resources and expertise, both entities exemplify their unwavering commitment to effectuating positive change in the fight against asthma in Nigeria.

In 2016, she started a mentorship program called Dear Young Artist, mentoring emerging artists with a focus on the importance of long-term strategy, finance and relationship management, two things that artists often shy away from.

Asake

Living up to his moniker “Mr Money With The Vibe,” Asake brings his creativity and style to GQ Magazine’s April/May 2024 issue. The Afrobeats star who rose to fame in 2020 with the breakout song “Lady” in 2020, has found great success over the years. After hits like “Mr Money” and “Omo Ope” featuring Olamide, he debuted his first studio album, “Mr Money With The Vibe” in 2022 and his second, “Work Of Art” in 2023. Both albums reached the top half of Billboard 200 and received numerous awards and nominations, including his first Grammy nomination for Best African Music Performance with “Amapiano” (featuring) Olamide.

But before all of that success, Asake has been grinding hard. “You have to understand: I got there in two years, but I’ve been working for years. People are counting the days you’re successful. They don’t count the days you’ve been working toward it.” He says.

For the latest edition of the New York-based men’s magazine, Asake opens up about his album “Work Of Art,” his recent Grammy nomination, and what he might have in store for the future.

Read excerpts from the interview:

Asake

On his style of music and search for higher evolution

“My music is just me,” Asake says. “It’s not something I can really explain. The thing is, I feel like the kind of music I listened to while growing up shapes who I am.”

“I always want to step it up. And I love it. It’s a bit stressful. Trying to get better is like having armour and scissors, and carving yourself. So it takes bone, it takes flesh. But at the end of the day, I know what always makes sense for me is, after all the stress, when I drop it and people say, ‘Wow.’ ”

On his debut record “Mr Money

“I wanted to be myself—that guy that wants money, that wants to go to the strip club, that wants to party, smoke, chill.” With the follow—up, he wanted to plumb a little deeper. “People don’t really know me because I’m quiet,” he says. “So everybody started seeing me as a mystery. “Work of Art is just for them to know me. You have to understand I’m human, but you can’t just deny the heart in me.”

Asake

On growth and the ability to defy expectations

“I’ll never limit myself on one thing. I might wake up tomorrow and tell you I want to do an all reggae album. Maybe that’s where God just directs me to,” he says with a shrug.

“For me to be able to do Mr. Money and people love it, that means it is inside me. It’s just for me to try to always bring it out, and be focused and always do it. It is inside you. I always say any artist that make a hit song—they can always make 40,000 hit songs. But it’s just like, if you forget yourself, then you can’t make the song again. The problem is not to forget who you are.”

On not winning a Grammy Award

“It’s not a loss for me. I might just get more next year. But in my head, I was not even taking it too seriously. I appreciate the fact that they nominated me—I won’t lie, that’s a lot to me. Even me, I didn’t see that coming this soon. I’m relaxed about it. Maybe because I know there will be a day that win will come.”

On one particular July evening in Silverlake, CA, Banke Balogun and Abisola Ogunkanbi met at a restaurant to catch up over cocktails. While eating dinner and having conversations, the two Nigerian ladies decided to create the Naija Gal Network, a global digital community for Nigerian women focusing on their social and professional development.

“We met at the AfroTech happy hour in LA like forever ago now. Abisola recounts, ” Chatting with another gal, Banke heard my accent and asked if I was Nigerian, and I was like yes, and she was like me too. We chatted and laughed about the year and the virtual event; it was lovely. We then exchanged numbers as well as social media and planned on having dinner that month.”

From a virtual Afrotech during the pandemic to a dinner in Silverlake and then the birth of the Naija Gal Network, Banke’s version of how they met is a bit tilted towards fate. “I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason—we were meant to meet. It’s crazy because I was on the fence about attending the happy hour because of the pandemic, but I had a little pep talk with myself and said, You have to go; you never know who you’ll meet. We met up for dinner later on in the month, and we instantly clicked.”

Born from a shared vision during the pandemic, the Naija Gal Network is empowering Nigerian women to connect, grow, and excel. Recognising the need for a digital space dedicated to supporting and connecting Nigerian women, Abisola and Banke created this platform. This lack of a dedicated online space created challenges for Nigerian women seeking mentors, peers, and professional development.

“Abisola and I were inspired to create Naija Gal Network,” Banke explains, highlighting the network’s focus on empowerment and support. “Nigerian women are killing the game across the globe, and we wanted to provide a platform for all of us to connect and mitigate any roadblocks that some of us might face, especially during and after the pandemic.”

Building a strong community takes time and effort. Since its launch in 2022, Naija Gal Network has faced one hurdle: recruitment. “Recruitment, during COVID, was hard due to job security.” Abisola acknowledges and elaborates on how they adapted their approach: “We chose to focus on our website and events towards solutions such as mentorship, career Q&A in the virtual happy hours, and creating an active job board on the website.” Hinting at exciting plans for the future, Banke concludes, “The past few years have been challenging for everyone, but stay tuned for future opportunities. We have some exciting things planned.”

A solution engineer, model, and fashion blogger, Banke wears many hats. You might wonder how these disparate skills help her lead and manage NGN. She explains that each “hat” she wears offers a unique lens for approaching leadership. “I have a very interesting career trajectory, and I feel very blessed to have a diverse range of career fields. This has helped me analyse how to run NGN to fit the needs of our members and identify what each member may need. As a model and fashion blogger, it’s helped me tap into my creativity with how we run the organisation. This includes branding, networking, and understanding the latest trends and how each member identifies with those trends.”

At the core of Naija Gal Network’s mission is empowerment. For Banke, empowerment is about having the support to achieve self-sufficiency in working towards your goals. “NGN empowers women by providing members with the resources they need to excel in their goals. This looks different for each member; for some, it may be having an accountability partner to work towards a fitness goal, and for others, it may be finding a mentor to guide them on a career path.”

Now, let’s get to the fun part of the interesting conversation where we get to know more about the founding ladies of NGN.

Abisola is passionate about learning and healthy living. She strongly believes in ‘feel good, look good.’ For her go-to power song to get motivated, she listens to Who Is She” by Queen Herby, while Banke listens to “Peace of Mind” by Rema.

Movies or series? And what movie or series are you currently watching?

Abisola: Absolutely series! I am currently still watching “Grey’s Anatomy.

Banke: Definitely a series type of gal. I am currently watching “Desperate Housewives.

What’s the best word to describe each other?

Banke: Abisola is resilient.

Abisola: Banke is persistent.

To wrap up this conversation, looking at your career paths, what’s one piece of advice you’d give a young Nigerian woman starting today?

Abisola: Fail fast. When you give your 100%, you leave no crumbs or room for regret. 9 times out of 10, the experience you garnered from the failed effort is repurposable or leverageable in your next venture, opportunity, or role.

Banke: Cultivate a strong network; surround yourself with people who will advocate for you consistently. Most of the opportunities I’ve obtained in my career path were due to word of mouth and sometimes to the lasting (great) impression I left on the person, organisation, team, etc.

British Vogue’s editorial leadership takes a historic step forward, passing from the groundbreaking tenure of Ghanaian Edward Enninful to the discerning eye of Chioma Nnadi of Nigerian descent.

Enninful, who shattered glass ceilings as the magazine’s first Black Editor-in-Chief, left a legacy of inclusivity and audacious style, paving the way for Chioma Nnadi to become the first black female Head, marking the dawn of a new era in fashion.

Nnadi, a fashion powerhouse, assumed the role with a unique perspective informed by her extensive years in fashion editorial. She joined Vogue in 2010 in New York and later worked running the American website of Vogue as well as writing for the magazine and co-hosting the Vogue podcast before taking up the reins last October as the Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue.

Resourceful and resilient: for me, those are the two words that truly underpin the brilliance of British style. Three decades later and, while much has changed in the 20 years I have been living in the US, London’s beautiful, creative, scrappy energy – one that just can’t be found or emulated anywhere else – remains undimmed.

And so, back on home turf with the new responsibility and supreme honour of taking up the mantle at British Vogue, I knew my first cover star needed to be someone who defined that inimitable spirit. Luckily for me, it was an easy choice.

FKA Twigs is an artist who represents the ideal of the modern British eccentric: she is a shape-shifter who rejects conformity and takes real joy in clothes. And as someone whose personal style was ignited by the clubbing scene, I was so inspired speaking with Twigs about her latest work and the always-alluring relationship between fashion and music.

She reminded me that it isn’t just about the runway – it exists and can be found in so many different places, be it at a rave or in our home lives.

FKA Twigs whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett is a British singer, songwriter, and dancer who became known as Twigs for the way her joints cracked.

She settled in Hackney in her early 20s becoming something of a local celebrity overnight when, in 2012, she was spotted by the photographer Matthew Stone at Hoxton Station the morning after a warehouse party. She got cast as an extra in a story for i-D. She’d end up on the magazine cover before she’d even signed to a record label.

I just want to be in touch with nature again though, that’s what it boils down to. I still feel so plugged into the culture. I want to rave, I want to make love, I want to meet people. But equally, I want to find peace.

Twigs speaking about her career, healing, love, her career, healing from abuse, her diagnosis, facing racism and the chaos of the real world.

According to the Vogue article, “as an artist, Twigs has always moved through the pop cultural universe at her own speed, often melding genres at opposite ends of the spectrum – opera with R&B, say – to form the contours of her singular sound. She’s stretched the boundaries of her physical body in every possible direction.

For her second album, Magdalene (2019), she mastered the ancient art of wushu sword fighting and ascended to the heavens on a stripper pole in the wildly popular video for “Cellophane”. Her approach to performance style has been just as mutable, defined only by her ability to shapeshift from one exquisitely dressed creature to the next.”

Through her foundation, Extended Hands, Stephanie provides medical care to women suffering from VVF and advocates for change. Her dedication has been recognised with prestigious awards like the Miriam Makeba Award for Excellence in 2017 and the Beyond the Tears Humanitarian Award for her work against rape and VVF.

Still in recognition of her outstanding contributions to social activism and impact through her work, Stephanie was recently honoured with the Lennox K. This award makes her the first black recipient of the award. On receiving the award, Linus expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to using her platform for social good, “This recognition goes beyond me; it is for all the women and girls out there who are fighting for a healthier, safer world. It amplifies our message and our work. It strengthens my resolve to continue advocating for gender equality, social justice, and improved maternal and reproductive health in Africa.”

The interim president of Thomas Jefferson University, Susan C. Aldunge, expressed her admiration, saying, ‘It was our honour to recognise the remarkable contributions you’ve made as an advocate for gender equality and social justice. Your ability to educate while humbly addressing the cultural obstacles impeding progress for young women is commendable. Your intelligent, personal take on the necessary changes in human rights has made a deep impact on all of us lucky enough to encounter you. A post shared by BellaNaija Style (@bellanaijastyle)

The session featured a liberating candid conversation between the hosts and our guests:

(1)Mitchel Ugochi Ukachukwu Miss Universe Nigeria, the 1st and only beauty queen in Nigeria’s history to clinch both titles of Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and Miss Universe Nigeria; (2) Zainab Balogun a British-Nigerian Actress, TV Host, and the Executive Producer at ZABA Productions; and (3) Mojibade Sosanya who has built an impressive career as a corporate communications executive, event host, TV presenter, and public speaker.

When Motunde asked, “How has self-care and self-love played a role in your advocacy effort and how has it helped you own your narrative?”

… I shared my story because I didn’t want another woman to find it hard to get access to this information. In sharing my story I have been able to build a community of women who can identify with this pain and now know what to do.

Self care became important for me, owning my narrative became a form of self-care because I wasn’t allowing the world determine what I can share and what I can’t share. Self-care doesn’t have to be just going for beauty maintenance, it can also be you taking a moment to be still.

Zainab Balogun

When Motunde asked Mojibade about her techniques for building confidence and finding her unique balance after pivoting career paths amidst a busy schedule, her response revealed a strong mentality routed in self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-love.

First of all building confidence and finding balance requires work. I am big on preparation and in a male-dominated industry, I’ve gotten to the place where I know that I’m bringing value on board and I’ve gotten past the phase where it feels like I’m not good enough because people don’t acknowledge that I’m as good as my male counterpart.

I’ve gotten to the place where I am really confident in myself because for the client to choose me they believe I have value to offer. I also love myself and don’t compare myself. While there is room for improvement and personal development, I’m not going to change who I am.

I prepare to go on stage with the 3 Rs: I read, research and rehearse. This helps me to go on stage and shine in my uniqueness.

Mojibade Sosanya

When asked about her perspective on navigating her industry’s pressure and staying true to oneself and values, Mitchel shared as follows:

In keeping true to one’s self and values, the first thing is to understand what those words mean to you and once you have a clear definition of what self-confidence and self-expression mean to you then you’re on the right path of keeping true to your values because then you know what those values are.

It’s not easy because there is a lot of pressure to be perfect, to look a certain way, to do things a certain way to appear in certain places and it’s not easy to keep up with these things and that is why your foundation has to be strong so that you can set boundaries. People often externalise boundaries but it’s also important to set boundaries for yourself:

what are the things you can’t compromise on? What are the things I can’t let go of? Once you’re able to build this foundation, it helps you stay true to yourself and then you don’t easily succumb to the pressure… Having a great support system and the right people around you also helps.

How can women embrace their unique identities in their fields and industries and also redefine beauty for themselves?

There is strength in knowing that everything that makes me who I am is ammunition, it’s power on its own, there is no other person like me. It doesn’t matter where I am, I know that I can buy a certain level of credibility with my uniqueness and I have to celebrate that.

I want to encourage women to have a sense of self awareness like no other. Be able to tell yourself what is true, what is fabricated and what is a lie.

Zainab Balogun

The digital world has penetrated more into society and it has stolen the opportunity to paint your life in the direction that you want without looking at anything that has been curated. It’s not a bad thing to have mentors and people that you look up to, however, you can get lost if you don’t have your own sense of individuality.

It is important to be able to differentiate between real life and social media; and have a strong foundation to enable you not to get carried away by the buzz.

Mitchel Ukachukwu

When asked how people can celebrate diversity and inclusivity within the concept of womanhood pulling from her recent viral interview on stereotypes against women and marriage, Mojibade Sosanya responded:

I am a single woman over 3o and I am not ashamed of it. I am single yet I am complete, highlighting the fact that there is no shame in singleness and there is no shame in desiring to be married.

I want to be married but I am not yet married and I am not going to put my life on hold until that happens, I am going to live my life to the fullest and I always preach this to every young female that I speak to wherever I go. I am happy to live my life to the fullest until marriage comes.

It is a completely horrible mindset to stereotype women that are not married and we must fight it. You can be 40 yet happy and single, singleness is not a condition, you are just unmarried and that is what it is. It doesn’t make you lesser than anyone who has gotten married and who gave us these timelines?

I need us to build a better society where women can live to their full potential whether they are married or not. A society without pressure and just letting people be and allowing them to breathe. Whatever phase you are in, allow yourself to breathe and bask in the beauty of that phase.

I am single, I am happy, I am thriving…

In an insightful LIVE conversation moderated by Oluwadunsin Sanya a leading editor at BellaNaija, Kanyinsola Onalaja, the founder and lead designer at the Onalaja brand and Toluwani Wabara, the owner and creative director of Wanni Fuga shared tested and proven strategies for success in today’s VUCA world from their point of view.

On switching careers and establishing Wanni Fuga, Toluwani said:

It started with wanting a simple outfit for a day out with friends and not being able to find one. Then I started to follow my mum to the market who was in the fashion business at that time. While she did her own thing I’d wander off to do my own thing and get her tailors to bring my designs to life. People started noticing what I was wearing, which was how the brand started.

On what inspired her fashion journey and formed into Onalaja, Kanyinsola said

My mum was also in the fashion industry but not conventionally. She created fabrics for other designers and taught me how to sew, how to draw, and all the things required for the foundation so I could build on it.

I also went down the traditional route of going to fashion school for undergrad and master studies. I worked as an embroidery consultant in the fashion industry for a while and just like my mum, I created fabrics for other designers. I just took the jump, to find the gap in the market and find pieces that spoke to me.

On maintaining originality while being innovative in an ever-changing market while staying true to brand identity and values, the women had this to say:

The brand strategy hasn’t changed, it’s just being streamlined and focused and we are being very intentional about everything that we do with the business module. We decided to go more of a made-to-order approach so that everything is tailored and custom-made to meet the needs of the client.

Community building is important to me so it’s not just about me, there’s a larger picture. So I place a high priority on my customers. On innovation, I am very flexible and adaptable to see what works and doesn’t, I’m also very big on textiles and texture.

It’s about the process and building on the knowledge I have. What can I do to make this fabric different? So for me, it’s taking the small and building on it with the knowledge I have.

Kanyisola Onalaja

_

Innovation is important if you want to lead the market and innovation requires creativity and creativity requires information.

I’ve been able to identify this and so I bring it forward with my team, we have a business strategy meeting; Wanni Fugai is not just me, it’s a bunch of people who have come together for the business to be what it is today. In these meetings, we review trends, develop prototypes, do a lot of trial and error, we review what our competitors doing.

Innovation isn’t only about designs as a fashion creator, it can range from anything like your operational approach, your customer service, and your marketing. Staying updated on different areas of your business is important. Early adaptation to trends is important, you don’t want to jump on something too late so you don’t potentially miss an opportunity.

At all times, I try to draw my team basic to our core values so that in everything this core values/mission statement guides the team and the business as a whole.

— Toluwani Wabara

On diverse educational background and this has affected her approach to entrepreneurship in the Nigerian fashion industry, Toluwani said:

I had no prior foundation in fashion so in terms of fashion knowledge I’m working backwards. I’ve had to learn things on the job and also take myself back to learn. Learning can be hard but I’m getting on with it fine, I had to take various courses and I’m currently still learning too.

On balancing jumping on trends and still creating timeless pieces

It goes back to your mission statement and ethos. What is it that your brand represents? Once you identify that, it’s easier to realise that not every trend applies to your brand and filter through it.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: There are elements of African arts and tradition in your design, how does this contribute to the representation of African fashion on the global stage?

I’m half Yoruba and half Edo and so most of my inspiration comes from both tribes. Whether it’s with the hand beading the textures or the colours, I just love to represent where I’m from.

What makes Africa amazing is that there are so many different versions of Africa and it’s an opportunity to show how diverse we are and how we can cater to various silhouettes and demographics but still be African.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: Will you say that international recognition and attention have opened up opportunities for you and other African designers?

I think so, there are more opportunities now to interact with buyers, and showrooms and just put ourselves out there and with social media there is a dynamic way with what we are doing.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

It all just comes down to international exposure. Seeing more growth, interacting with more customers and opening our businesses up to new markets. It also opens the brand up for feedback, good or bad. These feedbacks are taken into consideration when developing new products for the brand.

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: Has international exposure influenced your approach to brand visibility and brand growth?

As much as the brand is growing and becoming more visible, the core thing is that we are catering to our customers and creating very special pieces for them. We decided to do made-to-order where our customers can request for the dresses to be created for specific things. We also create these pieces for every other event. More than the brand visibility, the community matters.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

You must be prepared for the feedback that this visibility gives you. Also, monitor the insights because it gives you a lot of information about where these customers are coming from.

— Toluwani Wabara

When asked what lessons they have learnt from interacting with high-profile clients, the women had this to say

Make your quality speak for you, focus on making your products the best possible version they can be, and be open to feedback. It’s really about the quality of your work.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

Whether it’s hiring more hands or working overtime because you want to sustain and retain these customers. Feedback matters too because you want these customers to keep patronising you

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: What growth opportunities did you seize? How can budding fashion entrepreneurs identify these opportunities?

You have to have a strong narrative and identity to be able to cross borders. Your community also have to understand what this identity is. You also have to put yourself out there more

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

We focus on watching trends. My team scan to see what is new and trending and this keeps me informed during the product development phase and helps with marketing strategies both locally and internationally. We sometimes have to switch our focus when we see it necessary, it’s all dependent on consumer behaviour.

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: How do you approach mentorship and collaboration within the industry?

Knowing that not everything is a competition and you can collaborate in different ways. It’s also good to have not just a community of customers but a community of creatives, designers and people who have the same vision as you

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

Mentorship and collaboration are important and the future of collaboration between female entrepreneurs is looking very promising as women today continue to break down barriers. Collaboration is important because it allows you to share knowledge, and experience and pull each other’s expertise.

The onus is on you as a brand owner to reach out to whoever you want to collaborate with. Do your research about the brand and person, reach out to them and give them a proposal that they can’t resist.

— Toluwani Wabara

There is no doubt that these women poured from the enormous wealth of knowledge they have accumulated over the years building their impressive businesses.

In the vast world of hair care, few brands can claim a journey as remarkable as El’Rog. Founded by the visionary entrepreneur Elsie Rogers, this UK-approved natural unisex hair growth and hair care products company has gone from humble beginnings to become a renowned global brand.

Elsie’s inspiration for Unisex Hair Growth was sparked during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a woman going through menopause, she found herself battling with not just hormonal changes, but the stress of lockdown and homeschooling two sons one with Autism and the other preparing for A’Level exams. As she saw her once beautiful hair thinning, she embarked on a quest to find a solution.

This led Elsie to delve into a two-year extensive research on the benefits of natural plants and oils for damaged hair and dry scalp and discovered natural products across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania. Combining her findings with her passion for creating effective solutions, Elsie began experimenting with formulations in her kitchen.

With the help of her intelligent son, Christian, the birth of Opal – a revolutionary unisex hair growth serum – marked the turning point for El’Rog. It is UK cosmetic-approved and uniquely formulated with 14 natural products such as black rice, green tea and rosemary.

Not stopping at hair care alone, Elsie recognized the neglected realm of beard care. Observing that many men failed to give their beards the attention they deserved, El’Rog extended their range to include products like the popular Citrine men’s beard growth and moisturising oil, which is also UK cosmetic-approved.

Today, El’Rog’s products have found their way into Amazon’s FBA in the UK and will be across Europe and Africa by the summer of 2024. Products can be shipped to Africa via her website. With a commitment to creating natural and effective solutions, El’Rog has become a trusted name for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their hair and unleash their full potential.

Beyond her success with El’Rog, Elsie’s professional background brings immense credibility to her brand. With over 25 years of experience in business change and transformation, she has led high-profile projects across various industries, spanning banking, finance, insurance, retail, payment card, and government sectors.

Elsie Rogers’ journey from personal struggle to global hair care success exemplifies the power of persistence, insight, and the determination to create products that truly make a difference. As El’Rog continues to expand its reach, it is clear that Elsie’s passion and transformative vision will remain at the heart of this exceptional brand.

Finally, to forge stronger ties with our customers who may face import expenses, we are eager to extend our affiliate programme to Africa, specifically Nigeria. We are elated to welcome individuals who wish to partake in this opportunity and engage with our brand, while also mitigating any potential financial hardships associated with import fees.

Teach For Nigeria (TFN), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing education inequities by building a movement of leaders from diverse academic fields to teach in underserved communities as full-time teachers, has launched applications for its eighth cohort of fellows.

The Teach For Nigeria fellowship is a two-year paid commitment that mobilises fresh graduates and professionals as Fellows to make a meaningful impact on the lives of children. Fellows harness their leadership skills while designing solutions to address the everyday struggles of placement schools and communities.

Prior to their placement, each cohort participates in an intensive six-week pre-service training. The training exposes fellows to the organization’s theory of problem and change, its vision, mission, and core values. Fellows are also trained in 21st-century teaching pedagogy, leadership, and entrepreneurship while undergoing a community immersion experience.

In their classrooms, fellows not only have the opportunity to teach but also deepen their understanding of the challenges facing the education sector in Nigeria. They engage and work collectively with community stakeholders to change the trajectory of children in their placement communities. The fellowship goes beyond improving students’ literacy and numeracy skills; it offers fellows the chance to teach today and shape the future of countless children in low-income communities.

Since its inception, TFN has recruited, trained, and placed at least 1,500 exceptional young leaders in over 600 schools across Lagos, Kaduna, Ogun, and Oyo states. The organization has also impacted over 300,000 students and boasts a growing network of 835 alumni.

Teach For Nigeria is also part of the Teach for All Network, a growing group of locally-led, independent organizations in over 60 countries with the shared purpose of expanding educational opportunities for children worldwide.

Fellowship Benefits And Eligibility Criteria

The Teach For Nigeria 2024 Fellowship offers a wealth of benefits and requires specific eligibility criteria. Applicants must be Nigerian nationals aged between 18 and 35, have completed their NYSC service on or before July 2024, and hold a university degree with at least second-class honours. Accepted fellows will receive a gross monthly stipend of N94,990 for two years, including holidays.

Additionally, they will have the opportunity to pursue a Professional Diploma in Education program through a scholarship. Fellows will gain access to mentors and continuous professional development, enabling them to design and execute social change projects while benefiting from mentorship and networking opportunities with professionals across various industries.

Application Process

The Teach for Nigeria Fellowship selection process has multiple rounds of applications for each cohort. An applicant can apply only once for any cohort. The application involves essay writing, an aptitude test, a telephone interview, group assignment, and a physical assessment, including a mock teaching session. The 2024 fellowship application closes on March 29, with the application outcome and next steps communicated via email.

How to Apply

You can apply for the Teach for Nigeria Fellowship here

The TFN Fellowship Experience

Speaking at the recruitment launch event, Folawe Omikunle, the Chief Executive Officer of Teach for Nigeria stated,

Fellows commit two years to transforming academic and non-academic outcomes for the children during the fellowship. After the two-year fellowship, they continue to unleash their leadership towards addressing the barriers and issues identified while in the fellowship

On the opportunities available for Fellows after the two-year program, Folawe noted,

A number of our alumni have now launched social enterprises, leading successful and growing social enterprises and social impact organizations. We also have some of them working in policy, while others transitioned into working with the government.

Odedeji Gbeminiyi Abisola, a TFN alumna and panelist at the recruitment launch, said,

I went to the Teach For Nigeria pre-service institute as Mrs. Odedeji but came back as a brand new teacher-leader. The fellowship changed the trajectory of my professional journey, helping me to see beyond the four walls of the classroom.

Speaking on the kind of support he received as a Fellow, Kazeem Adekunle Abdulrasak, an alumnus of the fellowship and one of the panelists stated,

The support I receive at Teach For Nigeria started even before I resumed in the classroom. Teach For Nigeria gave me the platform to become part of a community of committed people.

Olukoya Tititobiloluwa Praise, a Teach For Nigeria student, also recounted how her teacher uses video clips and charts to teach and how she learned politeness from her teacher.

The theme of this year’s fellowship is “Teach Today, Shape Tomorrow: Your Leadership Matters Now!” targeting young leaders committed to tackling the country’s most difficult challenges and unleashing the potential of all Nigerian children. There’s a saying that when someone does exceedingly well, they deserve their praise. Tobi Amusan has a heart full of champion’s spirit and has done exceedingly well. Over and over again, she has proved that she is not just a runner who runs swiftly, but who breaks records – even her own – and scoops medals. We call her the golden girl of 100m hurdles.

Here’s a rundown of her world championships so far:

At just 18, Tobi Amusan announced her arrival on the athletics scene with a double gold medal performance in 2015. She dominated the 100m hurdles at both the African Junior Athletics Championships in Ethiopia and the African Games in the Republic of Congo.

In 2018, Tobi made history as the first Nigerian to win gold in the Commonwealth Games in 100m hurdles at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. She also won a bronze model in the 4x 100m relay with her teammates, Joy Udo-Gabriel, Blessing Okagbare and Rosemary Chukwuma.

Later in the same year, she won her first African Championship at the 2018 Asaba African Championship and a gold medal in the 4 × 100m relay.

In 2019, at her second African Games in Rabat, Morocco, Tobi blazed over the hurdles to win a gold medal in a record of 12.68 seconds.

In the same year, at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, Qatar, Tobi set a personal best in the 100m hurdles heats and semis but finished fourth in the final.

In 2021, she broke a 23-year-old African record by Glory Alozie, clocking 12.42 seconds to become the first Nigerian Diamond League champion at the Zurich Diamond League. This historic feat earned her the coveted diamond trophy and $30,000.00.

In June 2022, Tobi Amusan solidified her reign as the African 100m hurdles champion, retaining her title at the 22nd African Championships in Mauritius with a time of 12.57 seconds. She didn’t stop there, she added another gold in a victorious 4 × 100m relay.

In the same month, she proved her dominance with an amazing top-tier finish, clocking 12.41 seconds at the 2022 Wanda Diamond League in Paris.

The same year in July, in Oregon, Tobi broke the 100m hurdles world record in the World Championships semifinals, becoming Nigeria’s first world record holder in athletics. Though she didn’t claim the legal record in the final, she secured her first World Championship title.

Still, in July, she won the women’s 100 metres hurdles at the Stockholm Diamond League, with an impressive time of 12.52 seconds.

In August, Tobi dominated the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, defending her 100m hurdles title and setting a new record of 12.30 seconds. She also helped the Nigeria team win gold at the women’s 4 × 100 m relay.

In September, she set a new record as the first Nigerian to win the Diamond League title in 12.29 seconds at the Zürich Diamond League final event. What a perfect way to wrap up the year.

2023 was the year that tested Tobi. She started the season strong with 12.34 seconds in the 100m Hurdles at the Silesia Diamond League Meet on July 12. However, she faced a hurdle with a temporary anti-doping suspension, later cleared by the Disciplinary Tribunal.

2024 so far…

On January 5th, Tobi broke the African women’s indoor record in the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 7.75 seconds at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston and in February, she won the women’s 60mH at the Meeting Lievin in France clocking in at 7.77 seconds.

At the ongoing 13th African Games in Ghana, Tobi won a gold medal in the Women’s 100m Hurdles finals. This is Tobi’s third consecutive 100m hurdles gold medal at the African Games. She also won gold in the women’s 4 ×100m relays final.

On February 29, 2024, The Pride initiative hosted phenomenal women such as Nabila Aguele, Kenechukwu Chukwu, Jacqueline Suowari, Adaeze Ossai, and Doosuur Tilley Gyado to launch the beginning of a new initiative, The Pride aimed at empowering young girls.

The launch-themed “Young Leaders Summit” included head girls and assistant head girls in private and public secondary schools in Abuja.

Hosted by journalist and media personality Adeola Ademokoya, the event began with an introduction to The Pride’s mission, vision, and purpose. Jennifer Okeke-Ojiudu, who spearheads the initiative, spoke on behalf of the Ojiudu Foundation about the foundation’s commitment to empowering young girls to become successful women in the future. The Initiative name draws its inspiration from the strength and majesty of a lion’s pride, as reflected in the foundation’s logo.

Her speech captivated and inspired the audience of young girls, their teachers, and the speakers. Sharing her journey to finding her path and becoming who she is today, Jennifer Okeke-Ojiudu’s passion and dedication to empowering young girls and debunking stereotypes about what women can achieve were palpable.

Adaeze Ossai, Internal Auditor at Niger Delta Power Holding, spoke at the launch of the Pride event on February 29, 2024, at The Cans Park, Abuja

The first set of speakers, Adaeze Ossai, Internal Auditor at Niger Delta Power Holding, and Kenechukwu Chukwu, Community Manager at Jobtech Alliance, spoke on the importance of appreciating access and relationships. The girls were encouraged through the stories the speakers shared to ensure excellence in everything they do as well as committing to help others on their way up. When asked what the secret to the health and length of their friendship is, Mimi said:

Grace and love are the core foundation of our friendship. Our knowledge of each other has also helped us allow ourselves to grow. The love stays constant and never wavers. We have grown in our knowledge of each other and it helps us try our best to love each other as the other person likes to receive.

On handling conflicts in friendship, Sophia encouraged participants to squash disagreements respectfully, without name-calling.

Trusting your friendship helps you navigate the times when your friend(s) can’t be present; giving and extending grace to your friendship. Allow yourself to be themselves without them conforming.

Sophia Ike-Onu

Have an open line of communication.

— Ini Dima-Okojie

When asked how they have successfully navigated their friendship for so long, they all said: “At the core, let everything be rooted in love”.

If you want good friendships, start by being a good friend and embodying kindness. Be the person that you want other people to be to you.

Have you ever tried typing a word in your native language, like “uwa” for mother in Hausa or “chakula” for food in Swahili, only to find that something’s off? You change your keyboard, yet it doesn’t display your words accurately. The typeface may even look strange.

You’re not alone. This is a common frustration many face when trying to express themselves in their mother tongue. It is also a major reason that Chisaokwu Joboson created the “Ojuju” typeface, “Many typefaces do not cater to African languages,” he says. “Ojuju was designed to support 514 African indigenous languages. So this means a lot of letters (or glyphs) in your language alphabet which you would usually not be able to type easily in many typefaces can be found in the “Ojuju” typeface. Africans mustn’t feel uncatered for in the grand scheme of things concerning design and communication and the Ojuju typeface is one out of many to help solve that, aside from being a pretty-looking font.”

Of the 7,000 languages spoken globally, 6,700 are indigenous and at risk of disappearing every two weeks, according to UNESCO (The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). Nigeria and Cameroon are among the countries with endangered languages.

Given these challenges, especially in a digital era, people should be able to find their languages on a keyboard that caters to their communication needs. The necessity for suitable fonts and keyboards in preserving African languages, whether on the internet or in print, is more critical than ever.

The “Ojuju” typeface addresses this gap and contributes to the promotion of indigenous African languages.

“We are moving towards an era where digital communication in indigenous African languages will be possible. For example, Africans will be able to use apps that have an option for their languages, just like Asians do. Learning will also be digitally possible in African languages. Achieving this requires creating structures that enable African languages to thrive, and African typography is at the centre of this effort.”

The choice of the name for the typeface, “Ojuju,” draws inspiration from Chisaokwu’s childhood fascination with African Masquerades. In Nigeria, “Ojuju” is a popular word to refer to masquerades. When deciding on a name for his typeface, he knew he wanted it to reflect his memories of masquerades.

“As a child, the mention of this name would have us kids either running away to hide or running toward the masquerade to catch a glimpse. Whenever I visited my hometown in Enugu, I would see the village masquerades and be captivated by their intricate identities, swift movements, fiery looks, and intriguing stories. When Google Fonts approached me to design a typeface with African essence, I was already exploring type design and searching for ways to create contemporary fonts that could support African languages. And so I chose the name “Ojuju” for my typeface. It is an easy-to-remember name that rolls off the tongue as well.”

Every day is a great day to celebrate women! However, on March 8, the world makes it official with International Women’s Day (IWD).

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made toward gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done.

This year’s campaign theme is “Inspire Inclusion,” emphasizing the importance of diversity and empowerment in all aspects of society. It aims to unite women to pave the way for a future where all women have opportunities to thrive. The concept of inclusion also involves an actionable commitment that enriches our communities, workplaces, and societies.

The campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality, calling for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. “Inspire Inclusion” encourages everyone to recognize the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those in the Nigerian Event Industry, which has contributed significantly to the Nigerian Economy.

As the electrifying energy of the AFCON gripped Africa, the Nigerian national team displayed unwavering grit and dazzling skill, conquering opponents with their prowess, and ultimately reaching the prestigious AFCON final. Though their quest for gold fell just one step short, securing a coveted silver medal, their spirited performance has rekindled the flames of national pride.

The Super Eagles have left an indelible mark, proving their potential and uniting the nation in a shared passion for the beautiful game. Simultaneously, Tech powerhouse TECNO is stepping onto the pitch with a game-changing mission to transform dilapidated football fields across Nigeria

TECNO has unveiled ambitious plans to contribute to developing sports infrastructure. TECNO aims to renovate football fields across Nigeria, creating modern, state-of-the-art facilities that meet international standards.

The initiative goes beyond the physical renovation of football fields; it is a commitment to fostering football development at the grassroots level. The renovated fields are envisioned as hubs for talent identification, nurturing aspiring football stars, and promoting sports excellence. TECNO’s project emphasizes community engagement, aiming to create spaces that host football matches and serve as community centres. These spaces will facilitate sports education, fitness activities, and cultural events, fostering a sense of unity and pride within local communities.

Despite the conclusion of the AFCON tournament with Nigeria as runners-up, the passion for football remains strong and unwavering across the nation. Initiatives like the planned football field renovations highlight a shared commitment to fostering a thriving football culture in Nigeria.

As they transform, they symbolize a renewed infrastructure and a testament to the enduring spirit of football in Nigeria. The synergy between the AFCON journey and TECNO’s vision paints a compelling picture of a nation united by the passion for the beautiful game and the determination to build a brighter future for its sporting community.

Chairman and CEO of Fair Life Africa

Fair Life Africa Foundation, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation mandated to empower people for a fairer life, has been hosting Valentine Brunches since it commenced its child sponsorship initiative, Disadvantage to Advantage, in 2014.

The first Valentine’s Brunch was held at their office in Gbara Lekki and was sponsored by Airtel Nigeria in 2015. Over the years, the tradition of hosting their children and inviting sponsors to meet with them has been kept up, and it has always been a beautiful affair.

This year, the organisation took it a step further, inviting members of the public, civil servants, and corporate giants, to come and be a part of the celebration of love and goodwill. This year’s Valentine Luncheon was tagged “an event to raise awareness and sponsorship for children in need, empowering them to achieve their potential”.

It was a grand affair at the Standard Alliance Event Hall, where many guests of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Fair Life Africa Foundation, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor OON, congregated to support this laudable work.

Among them were: the distinguished, newly appointed Chairman of Delta State Universal Basic Education Board, Hon. Samuel Mariere, Prince Austin Enajome-Isire, Chief John Onojeharho, Elder Uba M. Donatus, Deacon Osaro Eguasa, Oluwagbenga Adedayo Bamimore, Arch. Other notable personalities in attendance were Sam Adebayo, representing Arielle Ajibade, Fair Life Africa’s newly elected trustee, Chief Fadipe, the proprietress of Pinefield Schools Lekki,  Musriq Adegbite, representing Damilola Emmanuel, the GM at Lagos State Waterways Authority, Pastor Shamal Emmanuel Adeolu-Olaiya, the lead pastor of Grace and Glory Tabernacle, Lekki, Pastor Ijeoma Adesanya, Funke Benson-Ajala, and Yemisi Wada, founder of Haven for the Nigerian Child, who gave the keynote speech, “Working Together for Lasting Impact.”

Yemisi Wada Speaking

The four-hour event started with mocktails and small chops distributed to the guests and children as they arrived and settled in. Pastor Shamal said the opening prayer, followed by a welcome address by the Chairman, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor OON.

In his address, he celebrated his beautiful daughter, Ufuoma Emerhor, as the Visioneer behind Fair Life Africa Foundation, expressing his pride at all she has been able to accomplish through the charity and personally.

Ufuoma Emerhor speaking

“Ufuoma, popularly known as Ufuomaee, is the renowned author of The Naive Wife Trilogy and The Marriage ABCs, which were launched together in a ceremony in August 2021. Copies of The Marriage ABCs were included as gifts for all the guests to take home with the belief that it would help many homes.”

34 children sponsored by the organisation, and their guardians, were present. Some could not make it because they were away at university or lived far away. Malik Kanabe, a beneficiary of The Spring Initiative, a novel initiative to help more people facing desperate challenges in the country, was also in attendance.

Ufuoma spoke about the various initiatives Fair Life Africa Foundation has run since its inception, starting with the Care Continuity Challenge Initiative, through which they worked with street children, reconciling them with their families after a short term of rehabilitation. She also spoke of their newest Big Brother Initiative, which addresses the needs of students in university, offering those bright and committed sponsorship to complete their studies. Ufuoma invited some sponsored children to come on the stage and give their testimonies, and it was an emotional experience for all. The children were so grateful.

Precious and Joy gave a short poem presentation about the Experience of the Nigerian Child, Chioma, another sponsored child, read a poem she wrote in appreciation of the Fair Life Africa Foundation, while four brothers, Olaitan, Sulaiman, Mustapha, and Ridwan, sponsored by Pinefield Schools since 2015, also spoke of their experience and gave testimonies.

Lunch was served with soft drinks and juices, as the guests were serenaded by a live band.

We are especially grateful to Chukwuemeke Ndego, Orhue Imosemi, and Chioma Oparadike for all the hard work they put into planning and executing this event, and in general, as staff and volunteers of the organisation.”

For his grand finale, he orchestrated a monumental gathering of iconic figures described as a sisterhood of megastars featuring 40 of the world’s busiest leading ladies, from Oprah Winfrey to Serena Williams, Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham and Miley Cyrus, each of them a legend in her own right to capture the essence of his tenure in one mesmerising image.

Vogue’s March 2024 issue is an ode to women and a fitting herald for the upcoming International Women’s Month.

When the initial idea for the cover was ignited, there was only one question: would 40 of the most booked and blessed women on earth actually make it to one studio in Manhattan, on one day in December, to take one image together? Spoiler alert: they came. From London, New York, Paris, Milan and Los Angeles, they materialised as if from a dream. Because who else could get 40 of the greatest talents from fashion, Hollywood and beyond in one room for a show of unity but Edward?

British Vogue

Vogue’s 40 cover stars all came into a room in Manhattan on one day in December 2023 for this epic shoot. It was the biggest set Edward had been on in his vibrant career, he said

Everyone was in the highest of spirits and it was fun to witness even the most worldly of stars’ jaws hit the floor at a never-before-seen gathering.

It was clear to all of us on the team that no one woman could or should encapsulate these past few years for the magazine. What we needed was a group, to lean into the power of the collective to bring to life what I hope has been a daring, disruptive and evolutionary period in Vogue’s history.

Fate whispers to the warrior, “You cannot withstand the storm.” The warrior whispers back, “I am the storm.”

2023 was a wrecking ball but I took it in my stride like it was nothing. For basketball heads, you know what it means to play 48 minutes on a torn meniscus. I still went hard in the paint even when the game was rigged. Yes, I am still standing on business but there were a bunch of feelings I couldn’t shake, disrespect that I shouldn’t take. These days, I sit on my balcony and reflect on the past year – what worked for me, and lessons learned, and this new year.

Little Miss Consistent

If there is one thing you must hack this year, it’s the discipline of consistency. One way I define maturity is the ability to maintain momentum. As a child, whenever you felt sleepy, you continued to lie down in bed. However, as an adult, you know the consequences of a little sleep and a little folding of hands – hence you wake up even when you still feel sleepy. You cannot be great at anything if you only do it when you feel like it or only when it’s convenient. Eccentric entrepreneur, Elon Musk, has a rather interesting name for one of his business interests – The Boring Company. I am not as fascinated by its operations as I am with its name; it underscores the point that some of the brilliant innovations or outcomes we enjoy today were underpinned by putting in hours of work on something seemingly boring. Engineers drawing up designs for cars might appear boring to you but driving a V8 car is never boring.

My BTS is full of doing boring stuff like watching stuff on YouTube for hours, reading big books, practising my craft or attending masterclasses but my creative output is never boring, no cap. People are shocked when I tell them I am not a great writer but rather a consistent writer – I write whether it’s convenient or not. At the end of last year, I checked my column on the backend and I realized in four years, I had churned out over 100 essays on BellaNaija. I never would have thought of doing that much when I started but I achieved it one essay at a time. Intensity is doing too much, consistency is the new cool.

Wetin Man Never Talk?

In reviewing some of my previous pieces to see how I can improve and better serve the community, I inadvertently saw some very stark predictions hidden in plain sight. All before-the-fact.

In April 2022, I penned a paragraph that aged rather well, “They will cry and complain about their economic challenges but when they see a savvy candidate, they will say “this one dey speak too much English, shey na grammar we go chop?” In July 2022, I wrote, “Maybe the establishment calls you naïve because the structure it is bragging about is a political euphemism for election rigging, rented crowds, voter suppression, thuggery, and vote-buying.”

In October 2022, I shared that “those who allow themselves to be divided by religion and ethnicity during the electioneering season will be reunited in their poverty after the elections.” As a cap off, I wrote  about the post-election behaviour of your favourite intellectuals, influencers and political jobbers, “What they won’t tell you is that they have cashed out on the low and will move to a country where things work to continue enjoying the life of their heads.”

Allow Me To Re-Introduce Myself!

We all know that most brands or products inevitably undergo some kind of evolution or iteration but we somehow don’t think such a concept applies to us as humans. Recently I listened again to HOV’s monster verse on DJ Khaled’s God Did. It wasn’t just rhythm-accented poetry, it was cloth talk on a very profound level. Shawn Corey Carter shared a bit of his life’s story in the most artistic way possible – the book of Hov. Hidden behind the entendres, witty references and soulful rendition were gems. Hov evolved from living at Marcy Houses to being a household name, from living in the projects to producing one of the biggest music projects in the sporting world, like the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and from being a hustler in Brooklyn Bay to being the businessman.

Please Lord, forgive me for what the stove did” – Hov acknowledges his not-so-pretty past and seeks redemption, perhaps not just for what he did but for the damage it may have left in its wake. It’s okay to have done stuff that you might not be proud of but hiding it and pretending it never happened will only hurt you. Take back your power by owning what you did while also sharing how you have turned a new leaf. “I just got a million off a sync, without riskin’ a million years tryna get it out the sink” – this is OT from the OG. Hov shares how he had since gone legit, and now makes more money with relative ease and all without the occupational hazards that come with the gangster life like Lucky Lefty. Although he still has his street smarts, he explains that his business model has changed – offering hope to those looking to leave that life. Everyone has a backstory, never allow yourself to be defined by your history but by your destiny. Now, back to our regularly scheduled programme.

Tomorrow Is More Expensive

Nobel Prize winner, Milton Friedman, had a very graphic definition of inflation: “Inflation is the most destructive disease known to modern societies. There is nothing that will destroy a society so thoroughly and so fully as letting inflation run riot.” You could almost swear that he was referring to Nigeria here because last year we all saw our purchasing power greatly eroded by inflation numbers that had never been seen before in modern history. Inflation is a thief of value; effectively ensuring that you need more money to buy the same basket of goods and services. One of the signatures of money is its capacity to be a store of value. Unfortunately, our local currency cannot pick a struggle. Why our Naira is almost not worth the paper it is being printed on is not just that it’s weak but also because it’s volatile. That means, it’s bad enough that the value of the Naira is doing badly against major global currencies like the Dollar, Pound Sterling, Euro et al. It is so bad that its weakness cannot even be relied on; one day it’s extremely bullish, and the next day it’s extremely bearish.

What this means amongst other things is that prices of especially consumables have gone through the roof and your savings cannot save you because while it’s safely tucked away in a bank vault, inflation has stolen most of its value. These voodoo economic policies aren’t helping either; instead of moving from consumption to production, the political class has doubled down on its mindless profligacy. This may sound unpatriotic but it makes economic sense; if you can, avoid having large amounts of money in Naira. Look for low-risk liquid securities or assets to protect your wealth. So if you want to buy something now, you might as well go ahead and get it because yesterday’s price is not today’s price.

It was a sea of purple at the prestigious Lagos Continental hotel on Saturday 27th January, when Oriflame Nigeria launched her first quarter catalogue of products for 2024.

MD/CEO, Nikola Baroli, was the first to take the stage as he declared the event open by reflecting on the successes of the brand in the past year – several catalogue launches, local and international conferences with all-expense paid trip for over 100 Nigerians to celebrate their success in the business, a consumer promo worth over 100 million naira including a brand new Hyundai Creta SUV, sponsorship of the most watched television show, Big Brother Nigeria among others.

He also shared highlights of exciting things to expect in 2024. He spoke about Oriflame’s impact over the past 10 years and hinted about the brand’s messaging direction – Reach Your Happy Place.

Oriflame wants to help you (our brand partners) reach your happy place; my happy place is right here in Nigeria with the amazing people, sharing the energy and smiles. You, the brand partners are changing people’s lives in amazing ways by putting smiles on everyone’s face with Oriflame products, he said.

He went on to describe his three years stay in Nigeria as nothing short of rewarding, stating enthusiastically how he can’t wait to celebrate Oriflame’s 10th year in Nigeria by October this year. The rest of the management team Subrayanman Gunda, Technical Director, Oluseyi Abiri, Operations Manager and Adesewa Okeyinka, Marketing and Sales Support Manager shared their happy place as well.

The Marketing and Sales Support Manager, Adesewa Okeyinka, expanded on the new global brand direction – Reach Your Happy Place.

We all have different happy places, but whatever your happy place is, Oriflame has the right products and a dependable business opportunity to take you there and stick with you every step of the way, said Adesewa

She linked this global theme with Oriflame Nigeria’s 10-year celebration theme 10-years of Transforming Lives saying;

Over the past 10 years, we have transformed the lives of numerous Brand Partners who have keyed into the vision of the brand and they now thrive in their happy place.

She then handed over proceedings to the host of the occasion, Kunle Remi And in his usual dapper self, Saro, the Anikulapo crooner set the ball rolling as he quipped, “the only brand that can bring me out of my house after a fantastic weekend, chilling with iyawo mi, it can only be Oriflame”.

The recently married Celebrity Host and Actor went on to announce Oriflame Nigeria’s 15 top selling brand partners for 2023, which included several beautiful, amazing and inspiring women.

The #1 brand partner in 2024, Oladunni Clara Aderinboye, speaking after her recognition, said;

Oriflame has been able to build a beautiful community of ladies building each other up and celebrating each other’s wins, I am so glad I spent my money on Oriflame 10 years ago, she enthused.

While the Swedish beauty and wellness giant went on to unveil external beauty products including Novage+, Love Nature and Tender Care, Irene Awa – products specialist, Oriflame Nigeria, highlighted Oriflame’s deep understanding of both outward and inner beauty.

This was underscored by the unveiling of Wellosophy – a new wellbeing formulation available as – Wellosophy Multivitamin for Man and Woman, Wellosophy Astaxanthin & Bilberry Extract, Wellosophy Omega 3, Wellosophy Wellness Pack Man and Woman and Wellosophy Meal Replacement for weight control.

Joining Irene to discuss the intrinsic benefits of Wellosophy was Dr. Peter Odunuyi, who elaborated on the need to lead a healthy lifestyle by incorporating exercises and good nutrition into one’s daily routine to reduce the chances of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and cardiac failure, all of which have become a healthcare menace ravaging the country, even among younger people.

Wellosophy Meal Replacement for weight loss works with exercise and a healthy lifestyle; it’s a calorie deficit product with a specified diet plan, he added.

Also, in attendance were Fredrik Ahsberg, head of the Political and Trade section, embassy of Sweden in Abuja, Sarah Ibru, Business Promotion Officer for the embassy of Sweden in Lagos and Ugo Boni, the Italian Consul General in Lagos, who spoke about what the top 100 Oriflame brand partners can look forward to when they travel to Rome later in 2024, as the ancient Italian city will welcome Oriflame’s top 100 brand partners.

Many brand partners testified about their amazing experiences with Oriflame and the opportunity to travel the world. More than 1 million people in Nigeria met Oriflame in the past 10 years. Nigeria is the fastest growing market in the world for the Swedish conglomerate.

Brand partners who had been with Oriflame since inception in 2014 were also rewarded for their commitment to the brand.

I stepped forward while everyone else was falling back. I stepped forward and that is why I am here today. I wanted to change my life. I wanted freedom from my job. I wanted to plan my schedule. Be intentional. Step forward.

Take that one step because you don’t know where that step can lead you. It can lead you to your happy place. Oriflame gave me a life that I can only dream of. Reach high and the higher you reach, the faster you reach your happy place, were the words of ecstatic 10-year partner Kemisola Ajetunmobi.

The occasion reached a crescendo with the unveiling of the next Oriflame Face of Nigeria 2024. Outgoing queen; Perpetual Ukadike thanked the brand for a successful ambassadorship for 2023, which saw her star in the brand’s BB Naija TV commercial. Miracle Chidimma Ezeonwu was crowned as the new face of Oriflame Nigeria 2024, and her tenure was greeted with a cheque of N250,000, with the top two runners-up also going home with N150,000 and N100,000 respectively.

The curtains closed with the recognition of new brand directors who won N400,000 each, with a plethora of Oriflame products given to guests at the occasion. It was indeed a happy place for all partners and guests.

Globally celebrated author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie officially introduced her inaugural children’s book, “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf,” at an event tagged “Christmas Magic With Chimamanda” at the Alliance Française Ikoyi. The event was a vibrant tapestry of colours, joy, and a shared love for reading.

Split into different segments from afternoon till night, the well-attended event converged diverse individuals, ranging from political and business luminaries to celebrities, book lovers, writers, and art enthusiasts, to revel in the magic spun by one of the world’s literary giants in her first-ever foray into children’s literature.

Speakers and dignitaries included Former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo; 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, and his running mate, Sen, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed; Chairman at Metis Capital Partners & Senior Lecturer at Harvard Business School, Hakeem Belo-Osagie; Former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili; Chairman at Abumet Nigeria, Bella Disu; and Senior Pastor of The Trinity House, Pastor Ituah Ighodalo, among others.

“Your children are not reading because you’re not reading,” said Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie during her brief remarks, emphasising the importance of reading.

She highlighted the critical role of books in nurturing critical thinking, a vital skill that is much needed in today’s changing world.

Addressing the theme “Why Reading Matters,” Former President Olusegun Obasanjo underscored the need to revive the reading culture in the nation, stressing that “we must read to internalise and gain wisdom.”

In a pre-recorded telecast, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo lauded Chimamanda for venturing into children’s literature, emphasising that

“getting children to read early is possibly the most priceless thing one could ever do for a child.”

Hosted by book reviewer and Channels Book Club host Kunle Kasumu, the event featured a dynamic Q&A session with Chimamanda, who took the time to answer guests’ questions randomly picked from a lucky dip by the event anchor.

There was a fun area for younger guests to engage in loads of “read & play” activities, including fun dances with Santa, bouncy castle sessions and the painting of a giant sketch of “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” done by the children and presented to Chimamanda as a gift at the end of the event. \

Young and old attendees left the event with gifts and cherished autographed copies of “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf” and got to engage and take photos with the beloved author.

The event was supported by Tomi Juice and Black Stallion Energy Drink, which provided drinks for all children and adult guests. Thanks to the individual support from VFD Group and Casava Insurance, who donated 100 copies of the book respectively, children from less privileged schools and communities will have their copies of “Mama’s Sleeping Scarf”. Some children were also transported to and from the event to enjoy the fantastic activities.

The night marked not just a book launch but a cultural celebration, resonating with Chimamanda’s belief in the transformative power of storytelling and reading.

You smell wonderful

Adele said to Chi

Hey BellaStylistas,

This post is about how Providence orchestrated a beautiful connection between multi-award-winning English singer-songwriter Adele and the ever-gorgeous New York City-based Nigerian content creator and entrepreneur Chinyere Chi-Chi Adogu.

Chi-Chi, who has been a long-time lover of Adele’s music, spontaneously decided to travel to Vegas on a solo trip to see Adele’s concert. She said on Instagram:

48 hours ago, seeing @Adele in concert was just a thought, an idea, something that I thought would lift my spirits. I’ve never taken a solo trip before, let alone attend a whole concert alone but something in my heart kept telling me to just do it, you won’t regret and I didn’t! This experience was priceless, the amount of people, strangers at that lol, rooting for me was priceless. I ultimately took myself on the best date I’ve been on this year!

Adele spotted the elegantly dressed Chi amidst the crowd, said hello to her and complimented her fragrance… Thus went their conversation, hit the ▶ button below to watch:

Cheers to more self-sponsored solo dates…  and becoming the woman of my dreams, BellaStylistas.

Get ready with Chi for the event as she puts on a black backless halterneck dress with a plunging neckline from RAT & BOA which she paired with an embellished JW PEI handbag, Dior earrings, and Swarovski bracelets. Chi topped her makeup with a poppin’ red FENTY lippie while rocking black French curl braids from her brand Chi’s Luxe Braiding Hair.

For the perfect finish, she sprayed the magical Libre Le Parfum YSL Fragrance.

The soft life is a head-to-toe experience so let’s get started with your hair!

Chi’s Luxe Braiding Hair

Every detail matters: a woman’s hair, makeup, outfit and fragrance determines the kind and quality of attention she can get. Thanks to Chi, we’re inspired to doll up for our next concert experience. Hope you are too.

Until then, stay stylish.
