When Lade asked Ink Balogun, a pioneer in Nigeria’s digital media industry who has led Aso Ebi Bella (asoebibella.com) since 2017 and recently launched the indigenous 234 Games (234games.co):  “As the leader of a successful online community, we know that you see a lot of GenZ and millennial women challenging traditional narratives of success. What are you seeing now in areas like entrepreneurship and social impact?”

She said:

I’m just really happy to celebrate Nigerian women, our resilience, our focus, and our determination are unmatched. We are top-tier! We set trends that the whole world follows and adopts eventually.

In the space of entrepreneurship, I see women of different ages find new outlets for creativity and that is really inspiring. I mean look at Veekee James, Hilda Baci, and I don’t even think they are 30… We have new voices coming out everyday.

Also for older people, if you feel your time has passed, that is not true, there is always time to reinvent the wheel and to pick up your inspiration. Nigerian women inspire me because we are setting the trend, we are the prototype!

When Clara Chizoba Kronborg, an award-winning media & social entrepreneur was asked to share some strategies she has used to overcome societal expectations and achieve success on her own terms seeing that she’s broken barriers in terms of media ownership, she said:

First of all, success is very subjective, it’s about being very authentic and as a Nigerian/African woman living in the diaspora, where you have to really own who you are 100% to be able to thrive and be able to have a strong voice and express yourself in the way that it should be.

How have I done that? It’s honestly by being myself and realising who I am: who is Clara? what’s your purpose, and what are you put on this earth to do? The moment I realised that, I knew that the only way for me to navigate that is to stay true to my person so that I don’t have to apologise when I walk into a room. I need you to see that this is me, this is all of me, and you’d take it as it comes.

The moment I embraced my personality, it made things a lot easier. I also leveraged networking to be honest and when you are authentic, people know when you are fake, people can see through your boo ha ha… Build a strong reliable network!

For the media work that I do, I’d honestly say it’s the team and the work they put in. I’ve been able to build a strong team who believe in my vision and I cannot thank them enough for it… Everything that I’ve built and leveraged so far I got from being true to myself, knowing who I am, and just holding fast to it.

When Joyce Jacob, a renowned Celebrity Makeup Artist with an eye for striking yet subtle makeup looks and the Director of Hair & Makeup for the 2nd season of Netflix‘s glamorous hit reality series YOUNG, FAMOUS & AFRICAN, was asked to share how she defines success for herself within the very diverse and saturated beauty industry, seeing that her career path highlights the need for artistic expression and career branding, she said:

For me, success is getting to the place where you are comfortable. When I say comfortable, I mean comfortable in your craft, comfortable in your talent, and comfortable in what you have to offer to the world…

Success is when you don’t have to work too hard. You know, I don’t have to bend over backwards; when I don’t have to do clickbait… You can actually just sit in your talent, sit in craft, and be confident that the bookings are going to keep rolling in; you’re going to stay booked and busy, and you’re going to keep achieving your dreams, for me that is success.

And also not getting carried away, cause in my industry it is so easy to get carried away. I started over 10 years ago, 2009 to be specific… and the industry has grown so beautifully. It’s been a beautiful thing to see and you can get carried away…

Part of my success has just been staying true to myself and it’s the #1 advice I will give to anyone starting a business… Just stay true to yourself, stay true to your signature, stay true to your craft, and I promise you, you will be successful.

Your work at Aso Ebi Bella celebrates African culture, how can we use entrepreneurship and digital platforms to define success beyond traditional stereotypical metrics and integrate cultural identity and social impact into our goals and why we should do these things?

Authenticity is where you find yourself, uniqueness is where you find yourself, not echoing other people’s voices but finding your own.

…GenZ and Gen Alpha you have the benefit of “being African” being cool now. We (Millenials) didn’t have that… and honestly we suffered from streotypes (a lot of misrepresentation) and it really took us defining what we want.

When it comes to women specifically, I love what we’ve done because things like fashion and even cooking have been looked down on. After all, women provide these services for free.

We provide them as part of our energy and giving beauty and light to the world; but us being able to say “No, take us seriously, this is a business, this ties into our identity, this says something, this makes money, this provides inspiration,” is so important.

We’ve even seen designers from international runways pick one or two inspirations from us, and it’s not like we need that validation but it shows that we have a unique authentic voice to bring.

So finding your voice, having the discipline to streamline it into a business and run a team around it, and staying true to yourself and improving your craft is really key… You also have to evolve while staying true to yourself.

I think it’s really important and I’m inspired by what I see going on currently.

— Nkechi (Ink) Balogun

What are some of the biggest stereotypes you’ve encountered as a successful African woman and how have you defined success for yourself in light of these expectations?

The biggest stereotype and I think most women can relate to this is “Oh she’s successful, someone is bankrolling her, someone is behind her, etc”. It’s just always someone else other than the person that’s truly behind the craft and that for me is the number one stereotype.

People don’t believe that it can be you all alone and I don’t know why this stereotype is always there but it’s disgusting and it’s false. You’d be surprised at how much you can achieve by yourself if you truly just put your mind to what you want to do.

You are enough and you should believe that you are enough! You don’t need to have anyone bankrolling or sponsoring you.

— Joyce Jacob

Your Guinness World Record attempt highlights the power of perseverance, what message do you have for young women facing challenges on their path to success? You’ve also moved from country to country and travelled to over 30 countries which is amazing, how has perseverance played a role in all of these things and your breaking the barriers to success?

It’s easy to tell someone to persevere, “you have to persevere and keep going”, but it’s easier said than done.

First of all the Guinness World Record attempt, I didn’t just wake up overnight and want attempt to break a record interviewing 94 people for 55 hours non stop. It was the most insane thing I’ve ever done in my life and it’s still ongoing and we hope to bring the news to life soon. However, perseverance is a big key… but it’s easier said than done.

If you want to achieve something, you just have to wake up and you go from it because no one is coming to save you. If you want to do it, you have an idea, you have a concept, go for it!

… How it works for me: I have an idea, I send an email out, and if I don’t get a response after 24 hours, I will be knocking at your door. Also if you say no to me, that’s okay. If you say go and restructure and come back, I will restructure and I will come back. That’s the way it is.

I don’t take no for an answer. If it doesn’t work for us, that is okay, I move on to the next person… and if you say no, I knock on another door. I keep trying again because I know one day, somebody will see the vision and say yes and that person becomes one of the team. I keep finding and looking for the person who sees the vision of where I am heading to.

There’s no perseverance without you putting action into it, it’s okay if it gets hard, cry if you have to but don’t stay down, pick up yourself and move forward. You need to find a way to get to the next level, if it takes calling the person that helps you feel the fire, call them… Build your step-by-step action and keep going.

— Clara Chizoba Kronborg

Shining as bright as the sun and inspired by her book Power Moves, her amazing stylist Jason Bolin, better known as J.Bolin settled for a flawless yellow bodycon dress for her tour campaign shoot. He chose this colour because it signifies confidence and positivity.

Sarah’s chin-length bob, earth-toned makeup, and bold jewellery complemented the simply chic dress making it the perfect fashionista moment. See below:

The African Leadership Institute (ALI) has announced the associates selected for the 2024 Class of the Tutu Fellowship programme. This year’s cohort includes associates of diverse nationalities and professions from Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The selected associates span various domains including private business, public governance, civil society, finance, technology, human rights and the arts.

Meet some of the 2024 programme participants:

Adenrele Sonariwo

Adenrele Sonariwo is the Founder of Rele Gallery, Lagos and Los Angeles; and the Rele Arts Foundation. As a pioneer in the contemporary African art scene, she has conceived and executed numerous prominent exhibitions in art hubs all over the world, most notably steering the inaugural Nigerian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017. The gallery under her leadership exhibits contemporary artists from Africa while the foundation empowers artists via grants, mentorship, and residency opportunities. She sits on the Advisory Council of South-South Art and the Expert Council of African Women on Board and often advises state governments and private and public institutions. Accolades include The Future Awards Africa Prize for Arts, Apollo’s 40 under 40 list, and New African’s 100 Most Influential Africans of 2022 list.

Affiong Williams

Affiong Williams’ ReelFruit has more than 182 full-time employees, with 60% of management, and 55% of employee base female. She is the CEO and Founder of ReelFruit, Nigeria’s largest fruit processing, packaging and marketing company. The company, which was founded in 2012, retails a range of dried fruit and nut snacks through a variety of channels, including more than a thousand supermarkets in 20+ states in Nigeria. Previously, she worked for Endeavor Global, a global non-profit that catalyzes economic development by supporting small to medium enterprises in developing markets. She co-founded the Small Business Network of Nigeria during the COVID-19 Pandemic, leading strategy and partnerships, including obtaining support from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Brian Odhiambo

Brian Odhiambo is a Partner at Novastar Ventures, one of the biggest and most experienced global VC fund managers in Africa. He built and leads Novastar’s West Africa practice. The firm has a decade’s track record of investing on the continent, over $200m of AUM and 24 portfolio companies. With offices in Lagos, London, and Nairobi, Novastar partners with transformative businesses that create lasting financial, social and environmental value and good for the many, not just the few and for people and planet.  Brian is a serial entrepreneur having built several ventures across Africa including being in the founding team that built Jumia, the largest e-commerce platform in Africa. He also cofounded Afrisolar, a last-mile solar distribution company in Zambia.

Modupeola Fadugba

Modupeola Fadugba is a multimedia artist working in painting, drawing, and socially engaged installations. Her works explore cultural identity, social justice and game theory within the African landscape. She founded The Artist’s Algorithm – a game installation that fosters debate about how to improve Nigeria’s education system. It was awarded El Anatsui’s Outstanding Production Prize and a 2016 Dakar Biennale Grand Prize from Senegal’s Minister of Communication. She says that it asks: how can individual artists organise their ideas to impact communities and even nations at scale? Her most recent exhibition, Dream from the Deep End, depicts swimmers against the bleak backdrop of America’s racialised – and often tragic – swimming history. In 2016, she started a mentorship program called Dear Young Artist, mentoring emerging artists with a focus on the importance of long-term strategy, finance and relationship management, two things that artists often shy away from.

On one particular July evening in Silverlake, CA, Banke Balogun and Abisola Ogunkanbi met at a restaurant to catch up over cocktails. While eating dinner and having conversations, the two Nigerian ladies decided to create the Naija Gal Network, a global digital community for Nigerian women focusing on their social and professional development.

“We met at the AfroTech happy hour in LA like forever ago now. Abisola recounts, ” Chatting with another gal, Banke heard my accent and asked if I was Nigerian, and I was like yes, and she was like me too. We chatted and laughed about the year and the virtual event; it was lovely. We then exchanged numbers as well as social media and planned on having dinner that month.”

From a virtual Afrotech during the pandemic to a dinner in Silverlake and then the birth of the Naija Gal Network, Banke’s version of how they met is a bit tilted towards fate. “I am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason—we were meant to meet. It’s crazy because I was on the fence about attending the happy hour because of the pandemic, but I had a little pep talk with myself and said, You have to go; you never know who you’ll meet. We met up for dinner later on in the month, and we instantly clicked.”

Born from a shared vision during the pandemic, the Naija Gal Network is empowering Nigerian women to connect, grow, and excel. Recognising the need for a digital space dedicated to supporting and connecting Nigerian women, Abisola and Banke created this platform. This lack of a dedicated online space created challenges for Nigerian women seeking mentors, peers, and professional development.

“Abisola and I were inspired to create Naija Gal Network,” Banke explains, highlighting the network’s focus on empowerment and support. “Nigerian women are killing the game across the globe, and we wanted to provide a platform for all of us to connect and mitigate any roadblocks that some of us might face, especially during and after the pandemic.”

Building a strong community takes time and effort. Since its launch in 2022, Naija Gal Network has faced one hurdle: recruitment. “Recruitment, during COVID, was hard due to job security.” Abisola acknowledges and elaborates on how they adapted their approach: “We chose to focus on our website and events towards solutions such as mentorship, career Q&A in the virtual happy hours, and creating an active job board on the website.” Hinting at exciting plans for the future, Banke concludes, “The past few years have been challenging for everyone, but stay tuned for future opportunities. We have some exciting things planned.”

A solution engineer, model, and fashion blogger, Banke wears many hats. You might wonder how these disparate skills help her lead and manage NGN. She explains that each “hat” she wears offers a unique lens for approaching leadership. “I have a very interesting career trajectory, and I feel very blessed to have a diverse range of career fields. This has helped me analyse how to run NGN to fit the needs of our members and identify what each member may need. As a model and fashion blogger, it’s helped me tap into my creativity with how we run the organisation. This includes branding, networking, and understanding the latest trends and how each member identifies with those trends.”

At the core of Naija Gal Network’s mission is empowerment. For Banke, empowerment is about having the support to achieve self-sufficiency in working towards your goals. “NGN empowers women by providing members with the resources they need to excel in their goals. This looks different for each member; for some, it may be having an accountability partner to work towards a fitness goal, and for others, it may be finding a mentor to guide them on a career path.”

Now, let’s get to the fun part of the interesting conversation where we get to know more about the founding ladies of NGN.

Abisola is passionate about learning and healthy living. She strongly believes in ‘feel good, look good.’ For her go-to power song to get motivated, she listens to Who Is She” by Queen Herby, while Banke listens to “Peace of Mind” by Rema.

Movies or series? And what movie or series are you currently watching?

Abisola: Absolutely series! I am currently still watching “Grey’s Anatomy.

Banke: Definitely a series type of gal. I am currently watching “Desperate Housewives.

What’s the best word to describe each other?

Banke: Abisola is resilient.

Abisola: Banke is persistent.

To wrap up this conversation, looking at your career paths, what’s one piece of advice you’d give a young Nigerian woman starting today?

Abisola: Fail fast. When you give your 100%, you leave no crumbs or room for regret. 9 times out of 10, the experience you garnered from the failed effort is repurposable or leverageable in your next venture, opportunity, or role.

Banke: Cultivate a strong network; surround yourself with people who will advocate for you consistently. Most of the opportunities I’ve obtained in my career path were due to word of mouth and sometimes to the lasting (great) impression I left on the person, organisation, team, etc.

A leading voice against child marriage and an advocate for women’s rights and health, Nollywood actress and filmmaker Stephanie Okereke Linus uses her platform to empower and heal women. Inspired by a true story, her film “Dry” sheds light on Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a devastating childbirth injury impacting girls and women in northern regions of Nigeria. Through her foundation, Extended Hands, Stephanie provides medical care to women suffering from VVF and advocates for change. Her dedication has been recognised with prestigious awards like the Miriam Makeba Award for Excellence in 2017 and the Beyond the Tears Humanitarian Award for her work against rape and VVF.

From 2017 – 2020, she served as the regional ambassador on maternal and reproductive health for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), where she advocated for maternal and reproductive health, and young people’s rights to reach their potential.

Still in recognition of her outstanding contributions to social activism and impact through her work, Stephanie was recently honoured with the Lennox K. Black International Prize for Excellence in Medicine by Thomas Jefferson University. Named after Lennox K. Black, a Canadian manufacturing executive known for his philanthropic efforts and service on various boards including that of Thomas Jefferson University, the Lennox K. Black International Prize for Excellence in Medicine recognises individuals who have made significant contributions to the medical field, promoting scientific discovery and advancements.

The award celebrates excellence in medical innovation and contribution to health and medicine, and Stephanie Linus, is renowned for her activism and impactful work in areas concerning women’s health and rights, including her efforts to combat issues like fistula and gender-based violence, which has been instrumental in bringing about social change through her films and campaigns. Her work extends beyond borders, affecting lives and policies internationally, embodying the spirit of the Lennox K. Black International Prize.

This award makes her the first black recipient of the award. On receiving the award, Linus expressed her gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to using her platform for social good, “This recognition goes beyond me; it is for all the women and girls out there who are fighting for a healthier, safer world. It amplifies our message and our work. It strengthens my resolve to continue advocating for gender equality, social justice, and improved maternal and reproductive health in Africa.”

The interim president of Thomas Jefferson University, Susan C. Aldunge, expressed her admiration, saying, ‘It was our honour to recognise the remarkable contributions you’ve made as an advocate for gender equality and social justice. Your ability to educate while humbly addressing the cultural obstacles impeding progress for young women is commendable. Your intelligent, personal take on the necessary changes in human rights has made a deep impact on all of us lucky enough to encounter you. Congratulations once more on this well-deserved award and the acknowledgement of your efforts.”

Nigeria’s business scene is buzzing with tons of micro, small, and medium businesses (MSMEs) run by amazing women. Statistics reveal that most Nigerian women start their businesses as passion projects or to augment their household income. However, as they establish themselves in the market, they realise the significance of designing proper structures and positioning their businesses to thrive. Yet, these women often face obstacles when securing the funds required to grow their businesses. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, it is important to highlight some of the challenges, in terms of loans and financial aid, that still hinder the exponential growth of women-owned businesses and explore ways in which the public and private sectors can help alleviate these challenges.

What exactly is holding them back? Let’s closely look at the five key financing challenges that female entrepreneurs face, and consider how the private and public sectors can step up and be their allies.

Banks love collateral like houses and land. But many women entrepreneurs don’t own these assets outright, thanks in part to cultural norms. This makes it super tough to qualify for loans, even if their business idea is great. In cases where they do own these assets, it is classified as unqualified largely due to unconscious bias. Banks need to get creative, look at cash flow, positive references, or even group guarantees from other women-owned businesses. Also, public institutions should help out by offering loan guarantee schemes specifically for women entrepreneurs which reduces risk for lenders.

Lack of Information

Sometimes, amazing financial options are out there, but women entrepreneurs might not know about them, or feel unsure about negotiating the best deal. When building alternative finance products and services targeted at women, it is important to do proper market research by speaking to the women and testing the core elements with your target audience. To solve this, private sectors can host workshops and training programs specifically for women, teaching them the financial ropes. Public institutions can also set up resource centres with financial advisors who can guide them through the loan application jungle.

Unconscious Bias

Let’s be honest, sometimes unconscious bias creeps in. Loan officers might question women’s business plans more intensely compared to men with similar ideas. Companies should train their loan officers to recognise and eliminate unconscious bias. Public-private partnerships need to also create mentorship programs connecting successful women entrepreneurs with aspiring ones, fostering knowledge sharing and building confidence.

Funding Flowing the Wrong Way

Financial institutions tend to focus on industries that are primarily dominated by men, such as construction, rather than those dominated by women, such as agribusiness and beauty. However, these industries have a lot of growth potential, and many women entrepreneurs excel in them. Private investors should establish special investment funds that target women-owned businesses in these thriving sectors. Public institutions could also offer tax breaks or other incentives to encourage banks and investors to invest in female-led ventures.

Familial Conflicts

Women entrepreneurs face a great challenge in juggling their businesses and family life. They often deal with issues related to childcare and limited flexible work options. This makes it difficult for them to dedicate enough time and energy to grow their businesses. Private companies can help by offering flexible work schedules or on-site childcare facilities. Public institutions should prioritise the development of affordable childcare options to give working mothers a much-needed break.

To bridge the gender gap in financing, both private and public sectors must contribute. By implementing these solutions, we can create a financial system that is fair and supportive for all. It is important to note that collecting data on the experiences of female-owned MSMEs is crucial for designing effective support systems. However, delivering on impact should also be a priority alongside data collection. Let us empower women entrepreneurs, unlock their full potential, and witness the Nigerian economy soar with the power of its amazing women entrepreneurs.

In an insightful LIVE conversation moderated by Oluwadunsin Sanya a leading editor at BellaNaija, Kanyinsola Onalaja, the founder and lead designer at the Onalaja brand and Toluwani Wabara, the owner and creative director of Wanni Fuga shared tested and proven strategies for success in today’s VUCA world from their point of view.

On switching careers and establishing Wanni Fuga, Toluwani said:

It started with wanting a simple outfit for a day out with friends and not being able to find one. Then I started to follow my mum to the market who was in the fashion business at that time. While she did her own thing I’d wander off to do my own thing and get her tailors to bring my designs to life. People started noticing what I was wearing, which was how the brand started.

On what inspired her fashion journey and formed into Onalaja, Kanyinsola said

My mum was also in the fashion industry but not conventionally. She created fabrics for other designers and taught me how to sew, how to draw, and all the things required for the foundation so I could build on it.

I also went down the traditional route of going to fashion school for undergrad and master studies. I worked as an embroidery consultant in the fashion industry for a while and just like my mum, I created fabrics for other designers. I just took the jump, to find the gap in the market and find pieces that spoke to me.

On maintaining originality while being innovative in an ever-changing market while staying true to brand identity and values, the women had this to say:

The brand strategy hasn’t changed, it’s just being streamlined and focused and we are being very intentional about everything that we do with the business module. We decided to go more of a made-to-order approach so that everything is tailored and custom-made to meet the needs of the client.

Community building is important to me so it’s not just about me, there’s a larger picture. So I place a high priority on my customers. On innovation, I am very flexible and adaptable to see what works and doesn’t, I’m also very big on textiles and texture.

It’s about the process and building on the knowledge I have. What can I do to make this fabric different? So for me, it’s taking the small and building on it with the knowledge I have.

Kanyisola Onalaja

_

Innovation is important if you want to lead the market and innovation requires creativity and creativity requires information.

I’ve been able to identify this and so I bring it forward with my team, we have a business strategy meeting; Wanni Fugai is not just me, it’s a bunch of people who have come together for the business to be what it is today. In these meetings, we review trends, develop prototypes, do a lot of trial and error, we review what our competitors doing.

Innovation isn’t only about designs as a fashion creator, it can range from anything like your operational approach, your customer service, and your marketing. Staying updated on different areas of your business is important. Early adaptation to trends is important, you don’t want to jump on something too late so you don’t potentially miss an opportunity.

At all times, I try to draw my team basic to our core values so that in everything this core values/mission statement guides the team and the business as a whole.

— Toluwani Wabara

On diverse educational background and this has affected her approach to entrepreneurship in the Nigerian fashion industry, Toluwani said:

I had no prior foundation in fashion so in terms of fashion knowledge I’m working backwards. I’ve had to learn things on the job and also take myself back to learn. Learning can be hard but I’m getting on with it fine, I had to take various courses and I’m currently still learning too.

On balancing jumping on trends and still creating timeless pieces

It goes back to your mission statement and ethos. What is it that your brand represents? Once you identify that, it’s easier to realise that not every trend applies to your brand and filter through it.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: There are elements of African arts and tradition in your design, how does this contribute to the representation of African fashion on the global stage?

I’m half Yoruba and half Edo and so most of my inspiration comes from both tribes. Whether it’s with the hand beading the textures or the colours, I just love to represent where I’m from.

What makes Africa amazing is that there are so many different versions of Africa and it’s an opportunity to show how diverse we are and how we can cater to various silhouettes and demographics but still be African.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: Will you say that international recognition and attention have opened up opportunities for you and other African designers?

I think so, there are more opportunities now to interact with buyers, and showrooms and just put ourselves out there and with social media there is a dynamic way with what we are doing.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

It all just comes down to international exposure. Seeing more growth, interacting with more customers and opening our businesses up to new markets. It also opens the brand up for feedback, good or bad. These feedbacks are taken into consideration when developing new products for the brand.

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: Has international exposure influenced your approach to brand visibility and brand growth?

As much as the brand is growing and becoming more visible, the core thing is that we are catering to our customers and creating very special pieces for them. We decided to do made-to-order where our customers can request for the dresses to be created for specific things. We also create these pieces for every other event. More than the brand visibility, the community matters.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

You must be prepared for the feedback that this visibility gives you. Also, monitor the insights because it gives you a lot of information about where these customers are coming from.

— Toluwani Wabara

When asked what lessons they have learnt from interacting with high-profile clients, the women had this to say

Make your quality speak for you, focus on making your products the best possible version they can be, and be open to feedback. It’s really about the quality of your work.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

Whether it’s hiring more hands or working overtime because you want to sustain and retain these customers. Feedback matters too because you want these customers to keep patronising you

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: What growth opportunities did you seize? How can budding fashion entrepreneurs identify these opportunities?

You have to have a strong narrative and identity to be able to cross borders. Your community also have to understand what this identity is. You also have to put yourself out there more

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

We focus on watching trends. My team scan to see what is new and trending and this keeps me informed during the product development phase and helps with marketing strategies both locally and internationally. We sometimes have to switch our focus when we see it necessary, it’s all dependent on consumer behaviour.

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: How do you approach mentorship and collaboration within the industry?

Knowing that not everything is a competition and you can collaborate in different ways. It’s also good to have not just a community of customers but a community of creatives, designers and people who have the same vision as you

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

Mentorship and collaboration are important and the future of collaboration between female entrepreneurs is looking very promising as women today continue to break down barriers. Collaboration is important because it allows you to share knowledge, and experience and pull each other’s expertise.

The onus is on you as a brand owner to reach out to whoever you want to collaborate with. Do your research about the brand and person, reach out to them and give them a proposal that they can’t resist.

— Toluwani Wabara

There is no doubt that these women poured from the enormous wealth of knowledge they have accumulated over the years building their impressive businesses.

The saying goes, “Give a woman a house, and she’ll give you a home… she multiplies and enlarges what is given to her.” Similarly, give a woman an artist, and watch the artist become a superstar, topping charts and making waves in the music industry.

The music industry in Nigeria has experienced significant growth in recent years, with projected revenues reaching US$4.40 million in 2022 and expected to grow to US$8.03 million by 2027, representing an annual growth rate (CAGR 2022-2027) of 12.43%. While it is common knowledge that Nigerian artists generate considerable economic revenue, what you may not know is the role played by women behind the scenes.

These women are instrumental in building and managing the artists’ careers, shaping their trajectories, and ensuring their continued success on the charts. Beyond their immediate impact, these women are also shaping the future of the music industry and contributing significantly to the nation’s economy.

In the spirit of International Women’s Month, with the theme “Accelerate Progress”, we bring you five women who are solidly standing beside your fave music stars – not only behind, them. In a male-dominated industry, we spotlight these women and celebrate their successes.

Janet Nwose – Asa

Asa and Janet Nwose have been inseparable since meeting in 2004. They not only do business and travel together, they also sing together. Do you know that apart from Janet being Asa’s manager, she is also her backup singer? Now you know that. Interestingly, it was Janet who introduced Asa to Cobhams Asuquo, who became the producer of her first studio album “Asa” (Asha).

Their partnership and friendship has endured since Asa’s emergence onto the music scene in the early 2000s.

Mariam AbassJoeboy

Mariam stepped into the role of Joeboy’s manager in 2020 when she returned to Nigeria from the UK after working as a pipeline engineer. “I’m Mariam Aduke Abass and I’m Joeboy’s manager. What people might not know about me is that I’m a civil engineer,” says Mariam.

From 2017 to 2018 she worked as Mr Eazi’s stylist, leaving her mark on international magazines and music videos. Her work can be seen in projects like Anne Marie, Major Lazer featuring Mr Eazi in “Let Me Live” and Davido featuring Popcaan in “Risky” where she styled Davido himself.

Beyond her roles in the music industry, Mariam wears many hats including owning a marketing agency called Mal Agency and running a sustainable luxury fashion pre-loved brand named Luxe Reloaded.

Speaking on the power of authenticity, Beverly Naya, who is also the award-winning producer of the prolific Netflix documentary, Skin, aimed at addressing colourism in our society, said during the session:

Of course, there are pressures that come with the industry but it’s really important to know who you are and have values and respect them at all times.

Ensure that you are truly yourself at all times and authentic to who you are… if it doesn’t feel right, if it doesn’t feel natural, you have to put yourself first, because the last thing you want to do is loose yourself in this industry. That’s not sustainable, you know.

One of the things that has given Linda and I, and so many others, longevity in the industry is that we are authentic and people have accepted us for who we are.

Speaking on utilising her platform to inspire others to be authentic, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, a chic mum, and co-producer of the Due-parenting pod said:

How I carry myself, How I dress is very important. How I look, How I talk, How I engage with people is really important because first impression matters.

I always remember and say: now that I’m a mum, will I be proud of how I look now in 10 years? Would my kids be proud of how I look when they see me in 10 years? I have to be proud of me…

I might not look a certain way people are looking right now or want other people to look or that is considered good for TV but I am me, I am being me, I am authentic and I am unapologetically African.

From the session, we found these prominent figures in media, TV, and film alluding to the fact that it is okay to be different from others. It is okay to be your own version of beautiful with confidence.

The ONE Campaign, an international, non-partisan, non-profit advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty and preventable disease, has announced the appointment of Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli as its new CEO. She succeeds Gayle Smith as CEO and will officially start her role in April 2024.

Ndidi Nwuneli has more than 25 years of extensive international development experience, particularly in areas such as agriculture, nutrition, social innovation, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, and youth development in Africa, according to ONE.

Speaking on her new appointment and role, Ndidi Nwuneli said, “I am committed to working with ONE’s dynamic team to lead the organisation at this critical time in Africa’s history. This will require that we forge new local and global partnerships, galvanise catalytical and innovative financing to ensure healthy livelihoods for the most vulnerable, drive sustainable and equitable growth in Africa, and ensure transparency and accountability in the deployment of resources at every level. ONE’s cofounders, staff, and board have worked tirelessly over the past 20 years, and its mission has never been more important. I am honoured to lead the organisation in this next chapter of growth and impact.”

Her appointment marks a strategic shift for the organisation, aligning with its efforts to modernise and effectively address the interconnected challenges of economic crises, climate issues, and conflict, which contribute to the existing poverty and health issues in Africa.

In her role as CEO, Nwuneli will focus on enhancing the connection of African countries to essential sources of financing for their development and growth.

Tom Freston, Chair of ONE’s Board, expressed enthusiasm about Nwuneli’s appointment, highlighting her impressive track record in international development and advocacy. “I’m most thrilled to welcome Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli to The ONE Campaign. Ndidi is an incredibly accomplished professional, passionate, and successful leader with over 25 years of international development and advocacy experience. Throughout her life and career, Ndidi has been a steadfast advocate for the world’s poor, bringing great passion and expertise to everything she’s done. Her powerful communication skills, broad global experience, and strong personal network make her the perfect leader for ONE at this pivotal moment. With Ndidi at the helm, I couldn’t be more confident that ONE will be leading the way in innovative new approaches to tackle the complex issues behind extreme poverty today,” he said.

Bono, co-founder of ONE, said,

ONE could not be getting a better present for its 20th birthday than Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli taking charge as its next President and CEO. An organization that focuses on Africa should be led by an African, that’s always been our dream, and Ndidi is the right person to take ONE into the future. She’s multilingual in the broadest sense; it’s not just languages she speaks across, but geographies and sectors too. She’s an entrepreneur and a policy wonk, an activist and a business leader who knows governments and business need to work together if we’re going to solve the biggest challenges facing our planet. I can’t wait to see what she and ONE’s brilliant policy wonks and political arm twisters are able to accomplish. In a world battling multiple fires, figuratively and literally, we need them now more than ever.

Congratulations, Ndidi Okonkwo Nwuneli!

The world is a glittering canvas of adventure, culture, and personal growth. One of the ways to paint your masterpiece is by snagging a juicy global opportunity. We all envision sipping chai in Mumbai, mastering salsa in Santiago, or teaching English in Thailand. Our international passports practically vibrate with anticipation. However, the reality crashes when the email comes bearing the dreaded red banner, “Thank you for your interest, but…” Rejection – the universal buzzkill, the dream-deflating gremlin of the global pursuit.

But before you drown in a sea of rejections, let’s take a deep breath because I know that feeling all too well. In 2023, I received a total of 57 rejections, receiving one almost every week. The confusion, the anticipations, and the instant deflation were peak torture. However, just this month, I have already received two acceptance emails. What helped me? I transformed my rejections into stepping stones for global success. You can too.

Although it may hurt, it’s essential to view rejections as feedback loops, rather than drowning in self-pity. Analysing the feedback you receive and learning from it can help you refine your approach. Did your application lack clarity? Were your motivations unclear? Did your skills fall short? Use this knowledge to hone your applications and highlight your strengths more effectively. Every rejection is a lesson, and every lesson learned brings you closer to your global dream. There are also necessary steps to master to avoid further rejections.

Be a laser, not a flashlight

Global opportunities are as diverse as the stars in the sky. There are opportunities to volunteer with endangered turtles in Costa Rica, teach STEM in Kenya, and intern at a tech startup in Berlin, but you don’t have to apply to them all. You have to hone in on your passions, skills, and long-term goals. Become a laser and focus on opportunities that resonate with you. This way, your applications won’t be generic resumes on autopilot; they’ll be tailor-made stories highlighting how you’ll truly add value and thrive in that specific role.

 Make research your friend

Applying to a program without thorough research is a blind date with a rabid raccoon. You wouldn’t do it, would you? Dig deep into the program’s website, social media, and alumni networks. Understand their mission, culture, and specific needs. Craft your application around that knowledge, showcasing how you’re the perfect piece of their global puzzle. This level of effort shows genuine interest and sets you apart from the pool of applications.

Craft, don’t compose

Essays and personal statements are often the make-or-break sections. So, ditch the generic fluff and weave a narrative that’s uniquely yours. Share your personal experiences, motivations, and how this opportunity fits into your larger life journey. Use vivid language, paint a picture with your words, and let your personality shine through. You’re not just a list of skills; you’re a fascinating human the program should be lucky to have.

Your recommendation matters

Don’t settle for random professors or distant relatives. Choose recommenders who know your strengths, passions, and work ethic. Ask them for specific examples of your accomplishments and contributions. Encourage them to speak to your global potential and commitment. A stellar recommendation letter can be the magic spell that turns “no” into “hell yes!”

Network like a ninja

The world is a connected web, and so are global opportunities. Tap into online communities, alumni networks, and professional groups related to your chosen field. Participate in discussions, offer valuable insights, and build genuine connections. These connections cannot only open doors to hidden opportunities but also provide invaluable advice and support from people who’ve walked the global path before you.

Embracing the global pursuit is an adventure, complete with both breathtaking highs and gut-wrenching lows. However, resilience, self-awareness, and strategic planning are the ultimate weapons to overcome the challenges. Keeping the fire in your belly burning, refining your approach with every rejection, and never losing sight of the incredible canvas waiting for your global footprints are crucial. Every “No” is just a temporary detour on your path to a resounding “Yes!”

This Unending Conversation About Nigerian Youth’s Unemployability https://www.bellanaija.com/2024/01/nigerian-youths-unemployability/ Mon, 29 Jan 2024 10:00:42 +0000 https://www.bellanaija.com/?p=1641027 Every now and then, HR professionals make an outcry on social media, lamenting the unemployability of most Nigerian youths. Every now and then, HR professionals make an outcry on social media, lamenting the unemployability of most Nigerian youths. In some instances, they even share their experiences with job applicants, sparking debates between HR professionals and individuals, likely job seekers or those who are weary of the ongoing discourse on unemployability.

In light of this ongoing discussion, a Nigerian saying comes to mind: ‘If you want to clean a stream, you must first locate the source.’ This adage encapsulates the notion that when confronted with a problem, particularly one identified as systemic, addressing the root cause is more effective than dealing with superficial manifestations.

In the context of Nigerian youth being labelled as unemployable, let’s start by talking about the archaic curriculum in many Nigerian universities.

Sometime last year, during a capacity development training workshop for officials of the Federal Ministry of Education in Abuja, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), passed a verdict on Nigeria’s educational curriculum, declaring the present curriculum as ‘overloaded and outdated’. Yao Ydo, the UNESCO director of the International Bureau of Education (IBE), emphasised the need to address the educational crises. This action involves making the curriculum relevant to ensure quality education, allowing values, knowledge, and skills to thrive.

Similarly, the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has declared that the current curriculum employed by tertiary institutions is obsolete and not aligned with the present reality. In the words of the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje at a public presentation of the new and reviewed National Diploma Higher National Diploma (HND) curricula NOS and ODFeL in Abuja, he stated, “Some of the already reviewed curricula were more than 30 years old. The nation cannot continue to use obsolete curricula to teach our students. As I speak, there are many more 20th-century curricula awaiting review.”

In a 2000 UNESCO report—notice how far back the report goes—on the state of education in Nigeria, the Nigerian curriculum is plagued by a complex mix of overloading, poor achievement, and inadequate human and material resources. The report suggests the use of a thematic approach to content selection, emphasising the importance of modernising the curriculum to better suit the needs and aspirations of Nigerian learners. This involves taking into account the evolving educational landscape and advancements in pedagogical methodologies.

This means that while many advanced countries keep pace with global best practices by consistently updating their curriculum to meet contemporary demands, providing their youth with a quality education that equips them for success in the workforce and community, Nigerian students are grappling with remnants of a British education system passed down decades ago, struggling to attain grades that are often deemed ‘reserved for God’. Already, many Nigerian youths find themselves under-equipped to compete in the labour market.

You cannot squeeze water out of a dry towel, no matter how much you try. For a very long time, and even now, many Nigerian graduates have had to rely on paper qualifications rather than skills and a can-do attitude. So when you observe a Nigerian youth through your screen during an interview, you see an overloaded individual with subpar education, likely lacking the basic technical know-how to answer interview questions and unprepared for present or future work challenges; knowledge gained through an obsolete curriculum holds little or no value in the current landscape of organisational development.

What does this mean for you, a Nigerian graduate who doesn’t have the knowledge or skill to compete locally and globally? You have to take extra courses, go for further studies, do a couple of internships and volunteer work to upscale.

_

While it is acknowledged that many Nigerian youths face challenges in employability, the other side of the recruitment equation involves HR professionals who seem to overlook the significant gap between the labour market’s demands and the employable skills of Nigerian youth. After navigating through economic crises, ASUU strikes, inadequate electricity, security concerns, and even village people to complete their education, many Nigerian graduates are also faced with a rude awakening upon graduation: they are not fit for the jobs out there. Another problem is that many job vacancy posts continue to exhibit unrealistic requirements and expectations.

Imagine the job post below:

A company seeks a dynamic and creative individual to join their team as a Social Media Management Intern. The intern must be passionate about social media, content creation, and digital marketing. Check out the requirements below:

  • Age not exceeding 25 years
  • Must have completed NYSC
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience in managing social media platforms.
  • Must be able to create design, have ample knowledge of digital marketing, audience engagement.
  • Portfolio showcasing experience or detailing the management of at least two platforms
  • Content writing and editing skills
  • Expertise in tracking and measuring engagement
  • Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in Photoshop and Adobe (added advantage)
  • Hybrid work mode – office location on the Island
  • Salary is competitive.

This ‘competitive salary’ may not be beyond 50,000 – 80,000 Naira. When you observe many job posts, you see a merger of distinct roles into a single position, disproportionately low salaries, unrealistic age limits, demands for extensive experience, and an overwhelming list of requirements for the roles. It’s like companies want to best of the best without paying for the knowledge and experience, but also don’t want ‘beginners’ because of the resources it’ll take to train them. And it’s understandable, after all, everyone is looking to maximise cost and resources.

So how do we bridge this gap? Perhaps with a little empathy, no? A better understanding of the average Nigerian graduate’s efforts to stay afloat by engaging in online courses and applying for various fellowships and mentorships would help more organisations extend grace to them. Understanding that many would also wobble a lot before standing on their feet can help you, as an HR professional, extend grace also, and make your recruitment process easier but effective.

Can companies adopt a more realistic approach when searching for new hires? Perhaps starting with scrutinising their hiring processes and meeting the Nigerian youth halfway. Can HR professionals relax in their bid to find the perfect hire for entry-level roles? Who is helping the youths prepare for the career world and compete locally and globally? How can we ensure our curriculum reflects the current world trends, and prepares graduates for companies’ needs? How can we make the Nigerian graduate employable?

Some weeks ago, I started a conversation in an HR Group for Recruiters and HRs in Tech on how it was very unprofessional for a recruiter to write a job description, including the names of the companies they would like the talents to come from. One will think it is common sense to know that your job as a recruiter is to leverage your skills to source for talents or skillfully poach from companies doing similar things, not to openly call out those companies in your job advert.

Some people were curious to know why it was not professional. To be honest, there is no rulebook for professionalism in the Human Resource space, sometimes you have to use common sense to know what is right or wrong that would not make others uncomfortable. Unfortunately, some newbies in the Talent Acquisition and Human Resources field have grown to learn the wrong things based on what they have seen their colleagues do which, in turn, soils the reputation of the profession.

Rome was not built in a day and a lot of us learned the right things after doing things wrongly for a long time. Let me share 5 things Talent Acquisition Professionals should not do:

Write Sloppy Job Descriptions

The quality of your job description will impact the quality of the candidates that apply to your role. You need to ensure you have captured the essence of the role in your writeups and not wait for people to ask you endless questions before updating it. Some job descriptions can attract passive candidates because the role expectation is written in a way that those candidates can imagine themselves in the role.

Not Being Prepared for Interviews

I believe that recruiters should have a form of template for how their interviews would run. Before the interview, you should have studied the job description and written down potential questions you will ask the candidate. Your introduction during an interview should be uniform and detailed, and your questions should be well structured. Else, you lose the attention and interest of the candidate.

Disregard Candidate Experience

Every Talent Acquisition Professional should prioritise quality, from the application process to communication during interview scheduling, to the main interview to the offer letter to onboarding. A lot of good candidates find the application process tiring because you’re asking them to repeat something that’s on their CV already or your questions are too many. Remember, your reputation can attract passive candidates

Ghost Candidates

I understand how overwhelming it can be to give feedback to a lot of candidates, especially when you’re handling multiple roles. I may have offended some people in the past and I know some of your employers are currently not empowering Talent Acquisition Professionals by purchasing a technology that will make the process seamless. There is one thing to be constrained and another thing to believe you do not owe candidates feedback. You owe everyone whom you have contacted (post application) feedback. Even if you forget, when they reach out to you, please do not ignore them. But please prioritise feedback so that they can have closure.

Ignore Your Personal Development

The job market is rapidly changing and there are evolving strategies that will impact the success of your job. A lot of recruiters were not properly trained. They just told you what to do and you figured it out along the way. Invest in your personal development. For example, there is a popular trainer on LinkedIn Learning called Barbara Bruno, you can pay for some of her courses and upskill. There are other paid and free resources you can use to upskill so please research.

I decided to take out time to write this for an entry-level Talent Acquisition Specialist looking to remain professional and follow best practices. Did someone say thank you?

In 2020, I received a phone call that would change the trajectory of my career. My former boss reached out to inform me that he had recommended me to his boss, who was newly appointed to chair the working group and technical committee for a nationally significant project. I was assigned the role of secretary for both arms of the project governance. Surprised and curious about why he selected me, I eagerly embraced the opportunity to be part of history – to witness the radical transformation of the National Theatre Complex, in Iganmu Lagos, a 46-year-old edifice.  The project held immense significance as it aimed to boost the Nigerian creative industry, generate numerous job opportunities for the youth, and ultimately restore the glory of an iconic building. By updating the equipment and facilities to align with 21st-century aesthetics, the project sought to inspire a new generation of creatives and to shine a light on the potential of Nigerian art and culture.

As the scribe for both the working group and technical committee, I not only became a crucial part of the project but also found myself in the company of industry luminaries, including bank CEOs, global grade-A consultants, and contractors. These meetings felt like a crash MBA and project management program, giving me insights into boardroom dynamics and decision-making processes.

Before officially taking on the role in July 2020, I underwent an interview and project briefing with my boss’s boss. Balancing this additional responsibility with my regular tasks necessitated a restructuring of my time, including late-night planning sessions for weekly meetings.

Despite not having formal secretarial training, my previous experience in a similar role caught the attention of my recommending boss. The seemingly minute tasks I had performed earlier paved the way for a more significant seat at the table.

Nearly four years later, as the project nears completion, I reflect on the relationships formed, lessons learned, and personal and professional growth I have experienced. Why does it matter to share this journey? Often, we find ourselves craving bigger opportunities and referrals, but it’s essential to pause and consider how well we have performed in seemingly minor tasks, even when it seemed no one was watching.

My boss wouldn’t have recommended me without witnessing my capabilities. the discovery of my capacity to manage high-profile meeting deliberations started with the small senior management meetings from the past. To earn referrals, it is important to demonstrate capacity and competence. Let me digress a bit on the topic of sponsorship – top executives are often on the lookout for competent people to sponsor and proudly endorse. The key is to show that you are the person they are looking for, and the best way to do that is through your work. Therefore, every task you perform must be treated as important and completed with excellence.

In Luke 16:10, the Bible reminds us, “If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones.” As we pursue our career goals in 2024, let’s give our best to every task. It all adds up in the end.

The current state of the economy is not very promising and if, like me, you’re not willing to resort to desperate measures to make ends meet or “urgent 2k”, freelancing could be a viable option to consider. Freelancing means freedom – to a large extent – and freedom, as they say, comes at a cost. For freelancers, that cost can be an emotional rollercoaster ride, inconsistent income and a never-ending influx of client emails. Having been a freelancer for almost four years now, I can attest that the experience is as breathtaking as it is challenging. Nonetheless, the lessons learned along the way are invaluable. Let me share some of the most significant ones.

Handle your freedom skillfully

As a freelancer, you have the freedom to wake up at any time without setting an alarm or being at work at a specific time. You also get to work in comfortable clothing without the compulsion to dress a certain way. You can choose the projects you want to work on, set your rates, and mould your career according to your values. Being a freelancer also gives you the flexibility to travel the world and work from anywhere, or take a break in the middle of the day for a spontaneous picnic. However, this freedom also comes with some challenges like working late into the night to meet deadlines and dealing with the uncertainty of an unpredictable income. To succeed as a freelancer, you need to learn to handle the freedom skillfully.

Learn to discipline yourself

Since you don’t have anyone to compel you to work, you become your boss and answer to yourself – and your clients as well. Hence, you have to master self-discipline. Set clear boundaries between work and life, create routines that keep you accountable, and learn to say no to projects that do not align with your goals or budget. Remember, freedom without discipline is just chaos in comfy clothes.

Networking is essential

The myth of the lone wolf freelancer holed up in a hut somewhere making creative magic is just what it is – a myth. Building a strong network is your lifeline to clients, collaborations, and prosperity. Nurture relationships with former colleagues, connect with fellow freelancers in online communities and attend industry events. Be generous with your knowledge, offer help without expecting anything in return, and watch your network become your safety net when the freelance waves get rough.

Shift mindset from “hustle” to “purpose”

The hustle culture of the freelance world can be seductive, but it’s a trap. Burning the midnight oil every night might land you a big project, but it won’t bring lasting fulfilment. Shift your mindset from endless grinding to purposeful pursuit. Define your “why,” align your projects with your values, and find joy in the journey, not just the destination. Remember, a sustainable and fulfilling freelance career is built on passion, not just caffeine and stress.

Self-care: Don’t forget to fill your cup before pouring for others

Freelancing can be all-consuming. Between chasing deadlines, pitching clients, and managing administrative tasks, self-care often gets relegated to the “to-do” list’s dusty corner. But listen, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Schedule time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Go for a run, meditate, connect with loved ones, and read a good book. Invest in your well-being, because a healthy and happy freelancer is a productive and successful one.

The freelancer’s life is a beautiful paradox; it is challenging and rewarding, unpredictable yet empowering. It’s a journey of self-discovery, a constant dance between freedom and responsibility. But trust me, the resilience you build, the creativity you unleash, and the sense of self-reliance you cultivate will stay with you long after the feast-or-famine cycle settles.

Fellow freelancers, what are your biggest lessons learned from the freelance adventure? I’d like to read your comments.

When I was young, I dreamed of having a job that would provide me with financial abundance. But my siblings laughed at my idea, saying that I needed to have a specific dream job first before thinking about wealth. But my dream was simple: I wanted to have an abundance of money. It wasn’t about a particular career or industry; it was about the freedom and opportunities that financial abundance could provide. For me, financial abundance was the ultimate job, the pinnacle of success. If you grew up in an environment where owning a car was considered a luxury, you might not care about what it takes to get a car. All you would want is to have a car, and that would be your dream.

When I started emerging fuller into life, I realised, of course, that wealth building can be achieved in two ways: through entrepreneurship and working full-time or other means. As a boy who simply wanted to buy a car and attain financial freedom and wealth, it became a crisis when I had to think of what to do to create this wealth and whether or not I should be an entrepreneur or pursue a career. I have read several opinions arguing for or against the two concepts. Some believe that entrepreneurship is the only way to attain a particular kind of financial freedom while others believe that the years it takes for an entrepreneur to grow equal the same years one builds their career.

Here is what I think

One of the most significant advantages of full-time employment is the perceived stability it provides. Traditional jobs typically come with a fixed salary, benefits, and a clear career progression path. Employees can rely on a steady income stream, health insurance, and retirement benefits, which offer a sense of financial security. Moreover, the stability of a full-time job can provide a safety net during economic downturns and assure workers that they have a consistent source of income regardless of market fluctuations. (Until you get laid off.)

However, the stability of full-time employment is timed and predicted. Salaries are paid once every month and that might make the pace of financial growth slow. For instance, if you secure an entry-level job, it’d require years of smart and hard work to attain the highest level in the industry. But a hack that has worked over the years, I believe, is that if you are smart enough in an industry, it might not take that long to get to the top, especially when you understand how to move around in an office job.

On the other hand, entrepreneurship is what I’d say is synonymous with risk-taking. Starting a business requires a significant investment of time, energy, capital, and zero success guarantee. Most entrepreneurs are quick to mention successful business owners but neglect millions of people who launched but failed just as fast as they launched.

However, the potential rewards can be immense. Successful entrepreneurs can create substantial wealth through the growth of their ventures. The ability to scale a business and tap into various revenue streams offers a level of financial upside rarely achievable through conventional employment. Currently, one of the most popular pieces of advice is to have multiple sources of income and you can enjoy that kind of flexibility when you are an entrepreneur. A full-time worker, before thinking of where else to source money, would first think of how to be successful in the office. If your business idea is brilliant and matches market and audience value, then you have an upper edge of becoming more wealthy than a full-time worker.

But it doesn’t take away the fact that entrepreneurs face uncertainties such as market fluctuations, competition, and the need to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. This dynamic environment can be financially rewarding for those who succeed but poses a threat to those unable to weather the storm. There is no particular balance.

Wealth and fulfilment

I think the pursuit of wealth is determined by our level of fulfilment. For instance, although it has changed, owning a luxurious car defined wealth to me. I used to believe that once I could safely drive a very fine and luxurious car, I have become wealthy. And some people have attained this through either their full-time or entrepreneurship.

It is not solely about monetary gain; it also involves personal fulfilment and lifestyle choices. Full-time employment may provide a sense of stability and routine, allowing people to achieve a work-life balance. For those who prioritise job security and a predictable daily routine, traditional employment may be the preferred choice. But entrepreneurship often demands a higher level of commitment and dedication. Entrepreneurs may find themselves working long hours, facing stress, and taking on multiple roles within their businesses. The lifestyle associated with entrepreneurship can be challenging, yet for those who thrive on autonomy and the excitement of building something from the ground up, the potential rewards extend beyond financial gain.

Employing Layi Wasabi‘s logic, entrepreneurs don’t only work to create money, they also create value working. If you build a company and employ people, in the immediate environment, you’re very valuable to your employees. This is not absolute to entrepreneurs alone because full-time workers also work to create values but it doesn’t take away the fact that they are dismissible.

I believe there is no definite answer to whether entrepreneurship or full-time jobs guarantee wealth. There’s no one-size-fits-all. Both paths offer distinct advantages and challenges, and the choice ultimately depends on individual priorities and aspirations.

But there is something glorious about life: you have the time to test the waters and see what works for you. You can work full-time for a year or two to earn capital and start a business. If the business fails, I hope not, then you’d have your career to turn back to. Life, they say, is full of trial and error. I found this quote from Jackson Brown Jr. summarising the discourse: “The biggest mistake that you can make is to believe that you are working for someone else. Job security is gone. The driving force of a career must come from the individual.”

As for me, I have decided to satisfyingly create my wealth through my 9-5 for now. I don’t know what the future holds but the wealth must be built, in any legal way possible.

Every company desires to secure competent employees whose goals and objectives align with those of the firm to have positive outcomes. This is why the recruitment process can be quite tedious in selecting outstanding candidates from the pool of job applicants. From identifying the need for a specific position, conducting job analysis, crafting a compelling job description, posting on various job boards, and navigating through screening and other recruitment steps, undoubtedly it can be a herculean task, but the ultimate reward at the end of the time-consuming cycle is hiring the most qualified candidate for the job.

Now, the hiring team has finally identified the most suitable candidate who successfully navigated through the rigorous recruitment hurdles, and everyone is glad to have met one of the KPIs and to contribute to the company’s goal of providing excellent service. However, the qualified candidate unexpectedly decides to decline the job offer after completing all the recruitment processes. This scenario has played out several times with other candidates, leaving you, the hiring manager, worried and wondering where the hiring team is getting it wrong. Let me share six questions to consider in addressing this recurring problem:

What is the candidate’s experience like in the company?

Candidate experience simply means the positive or negative experience a job applicant has during the recruitment process of any company, starting from when they apply via a job board or any other channel.

The importance of ensuring a positive experience for candidates during the hiring process cannot be overemphasized, as it greatly contributes to the employer branding of the company. Every hiring team must be very intentional about this phase because if candidates are not well treated during the hiring process, especially top talent sought after in the labour market, the possibility of them accepting the job offer will be very slim since there are other options they can always explore. Ensure to include a positive candidate experience in the company’s culture.

How well-crafted is the job description?

I have come across numerous vague job descriptions on various job boards that fail to capture the entirety of what is expected from potential candidates. A standard job description should include crucial information essential for the effective functioning of the role. If essential details such as benefits, working conditions, etc., are not included in the job description, and candidates only discover them after completing the recruitment stage, it may result in the candidate rejecting the job offer. Clear communication of remuneration is also imperative to avoid any misconceptions.

A standard job description should be both compelling and detailed to provide candidates with a clear understanding of what to expect. There was an instance where a candidate declined a job offer because the work mode was fully onsite, contrary to the remote work preference of the candidate. This was not mentioned initially and only came to light after the job offer was extended. Effective communication is essential in preventing such situations.

How many interview stages are needed to get a suitable candidate?

Candidates often find it exhausting to navigate through numerous rigorous interview stages. Many have opted to decline job offers due to the prolonged and demanding interview processes they were subjected to during the recruitment phase. In some cases, candidates receive more appealing alternatives with less strenuous interview procedures and improved compensation, leading them to choose those opportunities instead.

The hiring team must devise a more efficient and time-saving process to identify qualified candidates. It is also important to respect the time of potential candidates throughout the recruitment process.

How constant is your communication with shortlisted candidates?

Constant communication between the hiring team and shortlisted candidates is very important. Candidates should never be kept in the dark or have to reach out to the hiring team repeatedly to ascertain their status in the hiring process. This has to be initiated from the beginning of the hiring process to create a seamless procedure. A qualified candidate once rejected a job offer from a multinational company, despite attractive benefits, due to inadequate communication from the hiring team. The candidate later opted for a better offer elsewhere.

Is there room for career growth in the company, and what provision is put in place for this?

Most candidates consistently seek opportunities for career advancement. This aspect has to be taken seriously by the HR team of the company and must be communicated clearly during the recruitment process, ensuring candidates are confident in the potential for career growth within the company.

Candidates should be provided with insights into the provisions put in place to support the career growth of potential employees. This shows the company’s commitment to the intentional progress of its staff members.

Is the work-life balance policy effective?

A great shift occurred in the minds of many employees after the devastating phase of COVID-19, making the prioritization of mental and physical well-being at the forefront of qualities candidates consider when evaluating a job offer because life is so fickle.

Research indicates that the implementation of a healthy work-life balance policy in an organization leads to increased productivity and a willingness among employees to perform their duties diligently. For instance, a flexible work mode—whether fully remote or a hybrid setting—is facilitated by this policy, ensuring that the job is completed. This policy ensures that the stipulated work hours are strictly adhered to, with compensation provided for any work beyond those hours. It also allows employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance, acknowledging that they have a ‘life’ beyond working tirelessly for the company.

In a similar vein, the Employee Assistance Program should be a core arm of the work-life balance policy, to help members of staff in the organization with either their personal or work-related issues. This policy should be expressly communicated to candidates during the recruitment phase, as it will produce positive results.

In conclusion, it is not enough to merely identify quality candidates; it is also expedient to create strategies that will encourage these candidates to remain with the organisation after the job offer has been extended. As the hiring manager, what innovative approaches are you and the hiring team prepared to implement this year to attract the right candidates and ensure their retention?

It is quite uncommon in our world to combine the corporate world with a pop-culture lifestyle. For instance, it is quite hard to witness a bank manager who doubles as an artist. Most people quit one to pursue the other. But the case is different for Georgia Akuwudike.

Georgia is the Director of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Operations for Amazon UK and also an ‘Executive DJ’, as she dubs herself. Georgia, during the day, would be found in the corporate world mode, making calls and aligning business files, and at night, she would take over the controls and gears to mix music at parties. They often say you can’t be a professional and be an “outsider,” but that’s not for Georgia. She is a professional outsider who has won many awards, including the Best Female Chartered Accountant award from ICAN in 2013, the UK Everywoman in Logistics ‘Above and Beyond’ Award in 2019, and the African Achievers Diaspora Impact Award in 2022.

In this exclusive interview, Georgia Akuwudike shares how she combines the two worlds. Enjoy.

How are you doing today?

I am doing well, thank you. I feel even better today for having this conversation with you. Thank you for the spotlight.

Happy to have you. How was 2023 for you?

2023 was an incredible year for me because I achieved numerous significant milestones. Firstly, I was promoted to Director of Operations at Amazon, marking a moment of validation and appreciation for my hard work, commitment, and dedication to the business. I also ventured into the world of DJing, officially launching my career as a DJ in January 2023. This allowed me to share my passion for music with the world and create unforgettable experiences for audiences. Testing my physical and mental limits, I dedicated myself to intense training and participation in a live boxing competition in support of cancer research, as I had lost a loved one to cancer. That gruelling journey taught me valuable lessons on resilience and discipline. I launched Raising Giants, a community focused on nurturing the next generation of African female giants, following the values of Proverbs 31. As I continued to grow deeper spiritually, I also explored new skills and became a sound engineer apprentice in my church. I had my first external public speaking gig with over 1500 in-person participants, and I became a career coach. Lastly, I started writing my memoir, titled “Battle Scars, Bragging Rights.” This reflective process allows me to capture the transformative moments of my life and share my journey with others.

However, it is important to acknowledge that 2023 was not without its challenges. I experienced intense stress throughout the year, and I also went through the emotional rollercoaster of falling in and out of love. Despite these ups and downs, the year was ultimately fulfilling, and I attribute my successes and blessings to God. I give Him all the glory for the incredible opportunities that came my way and for the strength to balance them all.

What a wonderful year you had. What is 2024 looking like for you?

2024 holds immense excitement as I prepare to leave behind my eight-year stay in the UK and return to my motherland, Africa. This upcoming journey is set to make history as I take on the role of Director of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) Operations for Amazon, spearheading their e-commerce operations in the region, starting with South Africa. It signifies a whole new chapter in my life, and I am thrilled by the endless possibilities it holds. Working alongside an incredible team, I eagerly anticipate the challenges that come with conducting large-scale business in SSA. Together, we will navigate uncharted territories and overcome obstacles, leaving a lasting impact on the region’s growth and development. Immersing myself in the rich South African culture is another aspect that fills me with anticipation. Furthermore, I have plans to visit a minimum of 6 to 10 African countries each year, and this will not only provide leisure and adventure but also grant me a deep understanding of the varying nations and their unique identities.

For DJ PIP, South Africa’s vibrant music scene offers an exciting platform for me to continue to pursue this interest, and I’m anxious to see if I can break into the market and succeed in it. As I embark on this new chapter in 2024, I’ll eagerly embrace the challenges, seize every opportunity, and follow my passions. The journey promises growth, adventure, and perhaps fulfilment.

You’ve crushed it at KPMG, PWC, and now Amazon. What are the key ingredients to your professional success?

My career journey started as an assistant accountant at a tech start-up called Seamfix in 2011. I had to balance my work and writing my professional ICAN (Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria) exams, which was a tough challenge. So, to be honest, one of my top ingredients to success is the fierce work ethic I picked up in the early days out of necessity, and in the words of a colleague, I have ‘‘ridiculously high standards’’ that ensure I consistently add value and accomplish whatever task is assigned to me to the best quality. Grit and resilience are traits that have also helped me bounce back from failures, ensuring that I swiftly apply my learnings and move on. Knowing my purpose is another driver that keeps me motivated in tough times. Effective stakeholder management is also a skill that is crucial for success. Preparation should never be underestimated, as regardless of my expertise, I always ensure to learn, get better, and test myself in preparation for the next level. I also recently learned about the 5Cs (competence, confidence, communication skills, consistency, and compass) model from Indra Nooyi, and I agree that they are indeed key ingredients to success.

In all, I attribute my journey to the grace of God, as His favour has played an integral role in my story.

Did you face any challenges navigating different cultures and workplaces as a Nigerian in the diaspora? How did you overcome them?

One of the biggest obstacles I faced was the intersectionality of being a minority within a minority. Working in a male-dominated industry and being a woman of colour presented its own set of unique challenges. When I first relocated in 2016, I experienced a culture shock and struggled to adapt to the new environment and cultural dynamics at play. I felt like I didn’t quite fit in and couldn’t find anyone who looked like me in my field. This led to imposter syndrome, where I doubted my capabilities and felt like I didn’t deserve to be where I was. To combat these feelings, I felt compelled to work three times as hard to prove myself, which only resulted in burnout. I also faced instances of racism, encountered failures, and felt isolated without anyone to confide in who truly understood my experiences.

To overcome these challenges, I had to learn how to adapt my communication style and expectations to align with the norms and values of the new culture. I embraced cultural diversity by making a conscious effort to learn about the culture and traditions, and this helped me gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the differences, allowing me to navigate the workplace more effectively. I also had to step out of my comfort zone to build relationships and connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to establish a supportive network. Lastly, and very importantly, I had to seek mentorship, as learning from someone who had experience navigating similar challenges was invaluable.

Based on my experiences, my advice to others on similar journeys is: Be patient and give yourself time to adjust. Seek support from fellow expatriates or locals who can provide guidance and advice based on their own experiences. Actively engage in cultural exchange. Be curious, get better, ask questions, and show a genuine interest in learning. Most importantly, stay true to your values and maintain a strong sense of self.

You’re a DJ and also work in the corporate world. How did you find the balance between such seemingly different passions?

In the words of Omawunmi, ‘‘Music heals your body, heals your spirit, and makes you whole, so get in the music.’’ In my happy or sad moments, music has always been my safe space. Ironically, I can’t sing to save my life, but I do love listening to music, and I’m a fire dancer. It pains me when I attend events and witness DJs with poor transitions that kill the vibe. I often thought to myself that I could do a better job. However, with my busy schedule, I just never had the time to explore that thought deeper. But in 2022, I switched roles, had a bit of a breather on my schedule, and seized the opportunity to enrol in a DJ school, and I fell in love with the craft. After graduating from beginner to professional courses within three months, I made the bold decision to move from the practice studio to the dance floor. I reached out to club managers on Instagram, offering my services initially for free. Through perseverance and learning from my initial failures, I gained confidence and landed my first two gigs in December 2022. The journey was not without its challenges, but with each practice and performance, I grew and improved. Creating a viral launch video from my third gig propelled me into a career that has exceeded my wildest dreams. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of performing at over 50 events, including weddings, festivals, carnivals, corporate events, and private parties, and every Saturday night, I am honoured to DJ at one of Manchester’s most popular Afrobeats clubs, Roots.

Honestly, balancing my DJ residency with my demanding Amazon job is a challenge. To prevent burnout or compromised performance in either world, I limit the number of DJ gigs during busy Amazon peak seasons. Despite the professional challenges, stepping onto the stage on Saturdays and bringing joy to people fuels a fire within me that I treasure. It doesn’t hurt that I get to have multiple streams of income while doing something I love, and we all know that in our world today, multiple income streams are necessary.

“Executive DJ-PIP”— I love the name! How did you land on it, and how does it represent your unique blend of corporate and creative pursuits?

My DJ journey began when I became an executive at Amazon, and while I’ve started this journey playing at clubs and parties, my ultimate goal is to become a corporate DJ with a touch of weddings. To reflect this, I carefully chose the name “The Executive DJ” for my brand. It was a deliberate decision to wear a suit for my first gig, and it quickly became a defining element of my brand. For PIP, the phrase “Primus Inter Pares” (PIP), which translates to “first among equals” in Latin, has always resonated with my life. I consistently ranked among the top three students throughout my primary and secondary education. I graduated as the Best Graduating Student in both my B.Sc. (Accounting) and M.Sc. (Finance). I was also the highest-performing female in my ICAN exams. Even after relocating to the UK, I continued to receive awards in my industry that recognised my excellence. So, when it came time to choose a DJ name, PIP was an obvious choice for me. However, some people jokingly tease me and suggest that it stands for “Performance Improvement Plan.” While I can laugh along with them, I am proud of what PIP truly represents in my life—a symbol of being the best among equals.

Woah, you’re indeed an executive in DJing. What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about being a DJ?

I was surprised by the high cost of DJ equipment, which exceeded my budget. My friend jokingly termed it for me an ‘expensive hobby’. Moving forward, I urge whoever it may concern to stop underpaying DJs, especially when they have to bring their equipment.

You came to Nigeria in December. Did you get to do anything fun?

Oh yes! It was a fun month indeed, as it has been a while since I spent an extended period in the country. Apart from spending quality time with friends and family, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in the DJ scene, and what I can say is that there are some extremely talented DJs in the country; we have an abundance of skills. Through the help of my promo video and network, I secured 10 DJ gigs across various events, including corporate functions, private birthday parties, festivals, renowned clubs such as The Library, 345, Silk, and even a beach event, all within Port-Harcourt, Abuja, and Lagos. It was a challenging and tiring experience, but it pushed my limits and provided premium enjoyment. LOL!

Can you tell us about “Raising Giants” and how it empowers young girls? What motivates you to give back to the community?

As someone who has been blessed with undeserved favour, I have always found it easy to give back and be generous. In 2020, I had a revelation from God about my purpose on earth, which led me to create my brand statement: “I want to be known for my drive, passion, faith, and excellence, and use that to inspire the next generation of women.” This revelation gave birth to Raising Giants, a cause that is very close to my heart and aims at empowering and inspiring young women to fulfil their potential. In our society, there is a misconception that women cannot be successful without compromising their morals or using their bodies for favours. However, that is not how it should be, and it certainly wasn’t the example set by the Proverbs 31 woman. She was industrious, charitable, spiritually alert, physically fit, mentally sound, financially competent, fashionable, and a good homemaker. She was exceptional and more. With Raising Giants, I mentor young girls aged 16–21, teaching them how to embody these characteristics so they can achieve success in life without compromising their values. Currently, I mentor 10 girls per year, but my goal is to expand the programme over time and impact hundreds of females annually.

You put your DJ skills to work at Amazon’s 20th anniversary. DJing for thousands of employees sounds epic! What was that experience like?

It was a thrilling and nerve-wracking experience as my two worlds collided and my colleagues saw a whole new side of me. My usual music taste revolves around Afrobeats, Amapiano, and a touch of Hip Hop. However, for the anniversary event in Luxembourg, I had to switch it up and include some house and pop music to cater to the European audience. I dedicated time to curating the perfect playlist, and taking the stage, I performed my very first open format gig, blending genres like House, Pop, Amapiano, Hip Hop, and a touch of Afrobeats. The crowd loved it, and now I’m gearing up to DJ at our global bi-annual executive conference in the US, moving from our European audience to a global one and DJ’ing for executives. It’s incredible how speaking your goals into existence can become a reality!

Looking ahead, what are your biggest dreams and aspirations for the future, both as Georgia Akuwudike – the executive, and DJ-PIP – the DJ?

As Georgia, an executive, I am thrilled about the opportunity to launch Amazon in Africa. I am eager to expand our presence further into the continent and revolutionise the customer experience. Succeeding here will help create jobs, support small and medium-scale businesses, and make a lasting impact on the continent. When I was offered the role, I told my boss that I think I was “born for this” to make such an impact on the continent. Although I currently specialise in supply chain, logistics, and operations management, I have recently developed an interest in tech which I am now exploring. I believe that adding tech skills to my portfolio will open up endless possibilities for my career.

Regarding DJ-PIP, I have realised the need to enhance my DJ skills. After witnessing the talent and expertise of multiple DJs in the past month, I am motivated to step up my game. Although I have only been in the industry for a year, I refuse to settle for mediocrity. I understand the importance of dedicating time to improving my craft if I want to become the best corporate DJ in the industry.

Beyond my professional aspirations, personally, there is an inner part of me that desires to start a family. It might seem like TMI (too much information), but I also like to keep it real and be transparent and vulnerable. While I am driven to achieve my goals and make a difference, I have come to realise that there is more to life than just accomplishments. I recently shared with my friends that, in 2024, I just want to be babied and have a baby. Haha.

In a nutshell, I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead as both Georgia the Executive and DJ-PIP. I am determined to make a positive impact in Africa, elevate my DJ skills, and embrace the joys of starting a family, God willing.

My dearest Younger Me,

The aroma of fresh pine needles is thick in the air, snowflakes melt on my fingertips, and a familiar chill tingles down my spine. On New Year’s Eve, as the world seems poised on the precipice of change, ready to shed the skin of the old and embrace the possibilities of the new, I watch the fireworks paint the sky in ephemeral bursts of colour, my thoughts turning inwards, not to the future, but to you.

I know what you’re thinking. Another year older, another year closer to the precipice of adulthood, a word that used to loom large with both excitement and trepidation. You’re clutching onto the last vestiges of childhood, clinging to scraped knees and scraped egos with equal fervour. The world whispers of expectations, responsibilities, and milestones, and you’re determined to hold onto the carefree laughter and unblemished dreams for just a little bit longer.

I won’t lie, there will be challenges, moments when the weight of the world seems to press down on you like a suffocating blanket. You’ll stumble, you’ll fall, and your heart will break in ways you couldn’t imagine now. But trust me, darling, these cracks only allow light to seep in, illuminating the resilience you never knew you possessed.

Remember that time you climbed the tallest tree in the backyard, fear gnawing at your stomach but determination burning brighter? You made it to the top, shaky legs and triumphant grin, and the world stretched out before you, boundless and full of promise. That, my dear, is the essence of who you are – the tenacious climber, the unyielding dreamer, the one who looks at an obstacle and whispers, “Challenge accepted.”

Don’t let anyone dim your flame. There will be voices that tell you to conform, to fit into neatly constructed boxes. Ignore them. Your brilliance lies in your unconventionality, your refusal to be confined by labels and limitations. Let your heart be your compass, your curiosity your map, and your laughter your guiding star.

Embrace the awkwardness, the messy hairstyles, the ill-timed jokes; they are the brushstrokes that paint the canvas of your unique story. Don’t be afraid to be different, to trip over your words, to dance to your own rhythm. The world needs your unfiltered joy, your infectious enthusiasm, your unwavering belief in the power of a genuine smile.

Love fiercely, darling. Love your family, your friends, even the grumpy neighbour who yells at his cat. Love with open arms and open hearts, even when it hurts. Because in the end, it’s not the bruises you collect, but the love you give that defines you.

There will be days when doubt whispers in your ear, when the dreams you clutched so tightly seem to slip through your fingers like sand. But remember, even the sturdiest oak tree grows from a single seed, its roots anchoring it against the strongest winds. Your dreams are those roots, reaching deep into the soil of your potential. Nurture them, water them with unwavering faith, and watch them rise tall, casting their own shade of wonder on the world.

Yes, the years will tick by, marking the passage of time on the calendar of your life, but don’t let the number become your definition – you are not a sum of achievements or accolades. You are a kaleidoscope of experiences, a symphony of emotions, a universe of potential waiting to unfold.

So, my dear Younger Me, as the clock strikes midnight and the world welcomes a new chapter, carry this letter close to your heart. Remember the sparkle in your eyes, the fire in your soul, and the unwavering belief in the magic that is you. The world needs your light, your laugh, your unyielding spirit. Go forth, conquer your fears, embrace your journey, and never, ever lose sight of the girl you are and the woman you will become.

With love and a touch of nostalgia,

Your Older Self

P.S. And yes, you finally mastered that cartwheel you practiced for years. And trust me, the ice cream after was totally worth it.

At the beginning of a new year, I find myself doing something that has become a consistent habit for me over the past 15 years. I refer to it as a promise, but I’ve never followed it. I think of it as a prayer to make myself feel better and avoid taking the blame, even though I’ve stopped hoping for a response. It’s not because I’ve lost faith, but because I’ve discovered a better way to communicate my message.

We’ve all been there – the determination to be better in the coming year. “I’ll get my life together this new year; I’ll publish that article; I’ll start working out; I’ll network better; I’ll eat healthier; I’ll put myself out there more…” The list goes on, and I’m no stranger to its hopeful recitation. But when January comes with its struggles and the resolutions made in high spirits begin to waver, New Year becomes February, then March, and before we know it, the second half… then another year, only to repeat the same process.

I realised my life was a looped movie with familiar scenes, having the same ending time and time again. As someone who hates clichés, I knew something had to change. So, I carried out a simple experiment: do things a little differently. I pictured the person I would want to be at the end of the year, discovered what I needed to achieve to become that person, set goals to match my dreams, breaking them down into weekly tasks, and strived to meet them each week.

And 48 weeks later, I can say that, for the first time in forever, I left the previous year and stepped into the new one with a sense of satisfaction and fulfilment. What exactly changed?

I didn’t only pray this time; I also planned.

I didn’t promise; I took action right away.

Previously, I’d tell myself “I will do this or do that” without a clear plan and strategy on how I plan on getting those things done. I rested all my confidence on who I would be by New Year, thinking that person is a more responsible, more aware, more accountable version of the person I am at present, but forgetting that the person I am at present needs a perspective shift to become that version. And as long as the present version cannot be trusted, the future version cannot as well.

Now, when I step into a new year, I no longer enter with the delusion that every grey area of my life would magically change just because it’s a new year and just because I said so. But I enter with the conviction that everything will slowly change, one day at a time because I am ready to put in the work day by day to see that come to pass. Best yet, I no longer have to put my life or transformation on hold until January first; I can start right here, right now.

So when you think of the new year, try not to think of it as a new slate that can only be written on by a new, unseen, unmet version of yourself, because this keeps you from experiencing your true greatness and puts you at the mercy of the three-letter word: I’ll. But as long as you keep taking the traitor with you to the battleground, you will be slain before the fight even begins. Until you wriggle free from the shackles of a future commitment without present accountability, you set yourself up for a cliff called disappointment. So as each new year quietly but swiftly approaches, I’ve learned that real change isn’t about making grand promises. It’s about taking intentional steps every day. And, as I step into the next chapter, I’m leaving behind the idea that transformation only happens once a year.

I no longer want to wait for an idealised version of myself in the future. Instead, I am accepting and embracing who I am right now. As the calendar flips, I am no longer focused on becoming someone new. Rather, I am committed to growing, learning, and excelling every day. The journey of change is not about a distant January 1st; it’s about taking small, purposeful steps right here and right now, making each day count.

You might remember me from how I learned to enjoy my twenties, which I am just about enjoying.
This is yet another experience-based piece on how I secured 3 funded PhD positions and job
offers after my MSc program in the UK. This isn’t only for people who just moved
or are looking to move, it could be adopted by someone looking for a remote job or looking to
switch careers.

So, I moved to the UK to get my MSc in Engineering Management at Nottingham Trent University for the period January 2021 to January 2022. I graduated in July 2022. A lot of tear-jerking stories on how difficult it was to move to the UK (that should be inserted here) will be omitted not because they never happened, but because the essence of this piece is to highlight things that anyone who has plans to move or is currently in a foreign country could do to achieve their dreams. These are some things that I did, learned and unlearnt in two years.

It is important to point out mindset and resilience as the first leap of faith. With a healthy mindset, you will be able to try again and face challenges as just challenges, not as though your life is falling apart. Being in a new environment, you might need more than just an application, a resume, and probably only overseas experience for an employer to see your worth and value enough to give you a chance.

Cold emails

This gives one a 65% chance in an environment that places worth/value highly. If you have something someone is looking for or read up about the company, then you will be able to differentiate yourself from the pool, even when a job is not advertised yet. I  was able to get referred to roles at Google, Microsoft, EY, etc. through cold emails I sent.

A cold email has to be well-written. Here are some tips that I recommend:

  • Prove your worth

Worth here does not mean ego. Prove your worth with numbers, achievements, and results. Align your values and skills to what is required.

  • Understand the specifics

It is important to know when and to what extent to use honorifics while communicating with people from different cultures. For instance, if you are emailing an Indian or African, it is appropriate to use honorifics such as “sir” and “ma’am” frequently. However, it may not be necessary to use them while communicating with people from different belief systems. This is because your tone should be confident and professional, and not rely solely on mercy or pity. Moreover, some organisations prefer a flat and approachable environment, where status is not considered a barrier to communication.

  • Have email etiquette and tone

Having a good email etiquette is very key. You can attach your LinkedIn page, portfolio, and signoffs to your emails. This can be done in your email settings. Use paragraphs to separate points. Always sign off your emails with your name. The tone of your email should be about what you have to offer. Show moxie and dedication by researching and aligning with the organisation. I promise it will show. Limit words and grammar. Not too lengthy and not too superficial with words.

Personalised cover letters

If you apply for a job through a portal, it is possible to write personalised cover letters. Although these letters may only be read by recruiters or hiring managers, a well-written cover letter can help you secure an interview. It’s important to make your cover letter personal by telling your own story. Using a recycled cover letter can take away from its originality. You can capture the interest of recruiters by highlighting your unique experiences and qualifications that are relevant to the role you are applying for.

Build a portfolio

If possible, create a portfolio showcasing your past work that is relevant to the job you are currently seeking. This is particularly important if you are in the tech industry. Add your portfolio to the top section of your resume, along with your email address and LinkedIn profile. A portfolio gives you a better chance of getting hired than simply listing your past experiences.

LinkedIn

Optimising your LinkedIn profile can help recruiters find you and reach out to you for job opportunities. Make sure your profile is well-tailored and professional. It’s also helpful to take short courses related to the roles you are interested in. Connect with recruiters and people in your preferred field or company. They often post or share job opportunities that you might be interested in. After applying for the positions they posted, you can also send cold emails directly to them. However, it’s important to remember to talk to recruiters and connections politely and professionally, and not as though they owe you a job. Finally, know when to follow up and limit your follow-up attempts to avoid being pushy.

Communication

The Nigerian English language is generally well understood, so communication should not be a problem. However, it’s always a good idea to familiarise yourself with some of the slang, professional jargon and terminology used in your new country of residence to avoid feeling out of the loop during conversations. For instance, you may come across the term “cuppa”, which is a slang commonly used in English and even in professional settings. You can learn these terms by simply asking the meaning of someone who knows.

Reference

Be prepared to give references at any point. When using people as your reference, please inform them first. When using email references, use people who check their emails often, same with phone numbers. Every role or application will require at least two references.

Find a way to retain your values

The sense of self, I believe, is the most important value to have. You will find yourself struggling to retain many things, even your name. Sometimes, you will find yourself going by your English name, not your native name. But you can always try to retain your identity by shortening your name if you’d prefer. Say, Obiageli could do Oby.

Trust your path and factor in your reality

Most people you meet in a foreign country will tell you how hard it will become and how unrealistic it seems to believe you are any different. To be fair, they are only speaking from experience but everyone is not on the same journey. It is important to trust your path and put in the right work. What has never worked for anyone might just work for you if you try. Factor in your reality and dreams then you will come to a balance on what is best. Decision and consequences will be the best cause-and-effect strategy.

The God factor

I saved the best for the last. The role of God is the most important. It also involves guiding our steps. When starting over, remember that he who is faithful in the little things may not get it all in the beginning. Sometimes it is in the crushing and pressing that He is making a new wine. Seriously, I don’t know how to not tell you this but take your God and prayers seriously. E get why!

Reflecting on the year’s end has become a personal tradition, an opportunity to share insights with the cherished BellaNaija family and a tailored self-assessment. The landscape of 2023 unfolded with an array of events, spanning from the pivotal elections and governmental transitions in Nigeria to the global challenges of inflation and the transformative wave of artificial intelligence sweeping through the workforce worldwide.

Amidst this backdrop, I am grateful for the journey we embarked on together through five impactful articles. From discussions on crafting a fulfilling career and gauging success to the intricacies of building a meaningful professional path, we explored the nuances that truly matter. The timeless wisdom shared in career lessons from my father’s 35 years in civil service and the art of healing from career disappointments added depth to our conversations.

As we draw the curtains, I find it fitting to encapsulate the year’s essence through my reflections. Together, let’s unravel the tapestry of 2023 and glean insights that will undoubtedly shape our perspectives as we step into the promise of a new year.

Manifesting Through Words

I encouraged everyone to capture their aspirations for the year in a video in the article I wrote at the beginning of the year on the creative power of words. Recently, I revisited mine, astonished to find every spoken word had materialised. This reinforces the profound truth: Words don’t die. Speak your desires into existence; watch your subconscious align with the universe.

Election Insights

A foray into elective office enlightened me. Beyond technical competence, voters are drawn to candidates who resonate with their social construct. The vibe, language, and demeanour wield more influence than problem-solving prowess. Understanding this dynamic is key to navigating the political landscape successfully.

Personalising Your Journey

While collective endeavours are impactful, your journey’s uniqueness is paramount. External influences can divert you. Amidst the social media showcase, self-honesty is crucial. Assess your path, set personalised goals, and remember, what works for others may not be right for you. Personalising your journey, be it spiritual, social, or professional, empowers you to run your unique race.

The Value of Patience

Moving isn’t always the answer; sometimes, staying is. Rushing into change without proper analysis can lead to paralysis or unpreparedness. Your current position might be a vital stage in your journey, a preparation ground. Reflect on the ‘why’ before making a move, ensuring it aligns with your purpose and long-term goals.

Appreciation for Leadership

Cherish impactful leaders; their departure might reveal how much their energy fueled your growth. Celebrate them while they’re present, for their influence extends beyond your awareness.

Loyalty in the Workplace

Loyalty, both to individuals and visions, is a valuable asset. It takes time to build and pays off. While loyalty to a person is commendable, loyalty to a cause or vision is even more significant. However, be mindful; that loyalty can incur costs, especially during leadership transitions.

The Myth of Perfect Timing

Waiting for the perfect time can be counterproductive. There’s no ideal moment; you must act. Perfect shouldn’t become the enemy of good. Procrastination in anticipation of perfection can lead to missed opportunities, disrupted plans, and unrealized initiatives. Embrace imperfection and take decisive action. As we conclude the year, we should allow the lessons to guide us into a future filled with purpose, resilience, and personal growth.
