High Tea with BellaNaija Style is a glamorous spinoff of our Women’s Month celebration.

Chioma donned a monochromatic red look from one of her favourite African designers, Weiz Dhurm Franklyn‘s SS24 collection, featuring a red velvet, silk braided corset top paired with deconstructed pants. She paired the outfit with a red fascinator from Urez Kulture, a red bag, nude strappy sandals and luxe silver accessories.

Her hair was sleeked into a pretty ponytail with extensions from her brand Good Hair Limited and she finished the look with a flawless glowing facebeat that she later revealed was self-made. Swipe through the carousel below to see more of her:

Can I get an “ATE!”?

… because we love a BellaStylista who knows and owns her style!

Dressed in a chic plaid pant set featuring a crop top and tailored trousers, Hilda rocked her signature all-back braids and soft glam, with her glossed cocoa-lined lips playing the “star of the glam”. She topped the look with a chic floral bag and dark shades.

Lagos-based fashion designer and founder of IAMISIGO, Bubu Ogisi sits with Business and Booze host Koye ‘K10’ Kekere-Ekun to provide insight on running her Lagos-based fashion label dedicated to preserving ancestral textile techniques and provides insights into her entrepreneurial journey as she shares her challenges and triumphs in the fashion industry.
Known for her commitment to preserving ancestral textile techniques, Bubu Ogisi shares her journey as a fashion designer deeply rooted in spirituality. She discusses the challenges of navigating the industry while staying true to her beliefs and how she copes with going against the norm.

According to the fashion designer, she says:

I studied Computer Science during my undergraduate studies and proceeded to do a master’s in Fashion Business in Paris. I wanted to figure out the actual business aspect of fashion because it is the difficult part that many creatives don’t understand and it is the only way to be sustainable. Communication, strategy and marketing are the important aspects of doing business as a creative. If you don’t understand that, you get a lot of people failing and moving on to other things without being consistent.

From her innovative approach to design to her unwavering dedication to cultural heritage, Bubu provides unique insights into the fashion landscape, offering inspiration for entrepreneurs carving their paths.

You cannot just stumble on the business part of your creative business. I grew up across Lagos, London and Accra and moved to Paris where they didn’t speak English and I had to understand how to not stay back there and contribute to their society. I wanted to come back to contribute to my society and continent. It was more important for me to come back here and impact what I had learnt.

BellaNaija Style partnered with NIVEA in March which is significant for being Women’s History Month to celebrate the incredible women who make our world a more beautiful place. As part of the fifth year celebration for the annual BellaNaija Style Women’s Month activities, we had the privilege of celebrating two exceptional BellaNaija Style followers, Success Orakwe and Adaeze Ogbu, with an unforgettable experience as we wrapped up the #BNSWomensMonth.

These women began their bond and friendship at the university and they were randomly selected for a full luxurious makeover session, complete with pampering, expert makeup, and a stunning photoshoot.

Success is a multifaceted professional with expertise in geology, content creation, cybersecurity, and skincare, and embodies the power of self-confidence. Adaeze is a geophysicist with a love for dance, UI/UX design, and content creation, who showcases the beauty of diversity.

The true beauty of these women transcends their achievements, their friendship is a testament to the power of uplifting and celebrating each other. Their laughter and genuine warmth filled the room throughout the makeover, a beautiful reminder that true beauty radiates from within.

This makeover wasn’t just about achieving flawless makeup (though the results were undeniably gorgeous!). It was about celebrating the unique beauty of each woman and empowering them to confidently own their radiant selves. NIVEA products played a key role in creating a healthy, glowing canvas for the makeup artist to work her magic. Success, the skincare influencer lays emphasis on the fact that true beauty comes from understanding your skin’s needs and prioritizing self-care.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4 winnersKanekalon’s Activ8 Naija season 4 finale was nothing short of a glamorous, A-listed event, captivating audiences and leaving an indelible impression on all who attended. Held at the iconic Watercress Event Center, Lagos Nigeria, this year’s grand finale was the culmination of an exhilarating 8-week challenge that had everyone on the edge of their seats and glued to their screens.

Kanekalon’s Activ8 is a CSR initiative between its partners namely Xpression, Darling, and Mirron which focuses on discovering, developing, and empowering young female creatives and content creators through a series of intensive but very interesting weekly quests intended to juice out creativity and unravel hidden potentials among these bold women.

From the outset, it was clear that Activ8 Naija season 4 was going to be something special because it was the first time the organizers decided to focus on what is arguably now the fastest-growing hub for content creators – Nigeria. The competition, which assembled 50 interested and passionate selected ladies from the length and breadth of Nigeria, was unlike anything we’d seen before.

With every week’s challenges designed to push the contestants to their limits and updates, the Activ8 videos were a thriller to watch every week. From viral total makeovers to African-themed bridal looks, all the way to stories of impact and grand ball looks, each task unlocked a new level of the contestants’ creativity and ingenuity in new and exciting ways.

However, it was the grand finale that truly stole the show. With the top 5 finalists vying for the coveted title of Activ8 Queen, tensions were running high as the contestants prepared to showcase their final work to the hundreds of eager guests made up of partners of Kanekalon, friends, and families of the contestants, including well-wishers and fans. The “Belle of the Ball” challenge, in particular, was a sight to behold, with each finalist pushing the boundaries of hair fashion to create truly breathtaking looks.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4After a beautiful presentation of all 5 finale videos by the contestants who came up to answer questions posed by the sensational MC VoiceofSteph just before their video was previewed, Victoria Ogbu, popularly referred to as Vee in the competition emerged victorious in the end. Her outstanding video received loud cheers, a standing ovation from some members of the audience, and great remarks from the judges to earn her a spot above the others as Activ8 Queen.

She won 5000 USD cash for her personal use as well as to support her dreams, with the addition of products and gifts from all 3 partners of Kanekalon. Adewale Karimo known in the competition as Kahris emerged as the 1st runner-up walking home with 2000 USD and products from Kanekalon partners.

Narrowly securing her spot to complete the top trio was Jumbo Richard, stage named Telmsss, emerging as the 2nd runner-up with a cash win of 1000 USD and gifts and products from Darling, Xpression, and Mirron.

Kanekalon Activ8 Naija Season 4The event itself was a feast for the senses, with dazzling hair shows, electrifying musical performances, and plenty of surprises along the way. The Marketing Executive of Kaneka and one of the project leads from the company, Laura Mills, who also gave the opening address for the event, was very elated about the turnout of events and did not hide her excitement about the choice of the winner as well as the success of Activ8.

She reiterated Kanekalon’s commitment to not just the beauty of women but also to their all-round development, and Activ8 is just one of the platforms to amplify this mission. She was grateful to all partners of the brand as well as Invictus Global for brilliantly managing this project and production. She encouraged people to follow the Kanekalon page (@Bekanekalon) for more updates and exciting projects coming up, including a very much possible Activ8 season 5.

As the curtain fell on another unforgettable season of Activ8, it was clear that Kanekalon had once again succeeded in its mission to inspire and empower young women. The rerun of the entire Activ8 project from the first task to the live stream of the finale can be watched on their official Youtube page, @Kanekalonglobal.

If you have been following the BellaNaija Style Women’s Month campaigns and our weekly LIVE conversations #BNSCONVOS, you can agree that each session has been insightful with the spotlight on amazing women sharing lessons from their journey with us.

Hosted by BellaNaija Style‘s Lade Adisa, the finale was just as amazing with three (3) outstanding African women joining us to discuss the topic: “What Does Success Mean to Women in 2024?

Hit the ▶ button below to watch:

A post shared by BellaNaija Style (@bellanaijastyle)

When Lade asked Ink Balogun, a pioneer in Nigeria’s digital media industry who has led Aso Ebi Bella (asoebibella.com) since 2017 and recently launched the indigenous 234 Games (234games.co):  “As the leader of a successful online community, we know that you see a lot of GenZ and millennial women challenging traditional narratives of success. What are you seeing now in areas like entrepreneurship and social impact?”

She said:

I’m just really happy to celebrate Nigerian women, our resilience, our focus, and our determination are unmatched. We are top-tier! We set trends that the whole world follows and adopts eventually.

In the space of entrepreneurship, I see women of different ages find new outlets for creativity and that is really inspiring. I mean look at Veekee James, Hilda Baci, and I don’t even think they are 30… We have new voices coming out everyday.

Also for older people, if you feel your time has passed, that is not true, there is always time to reinvent the wheel and to pick up your inspiration. Nigerian women inspire me because we are setting the trend, we are the prototype!

When Clara Chizoba Kronborg, an award-winning media & social entrepreneur was asked to share some strategies she has used to overcome societal expectations and achieve success on her own terms seeing that she’s broken barriers in terms of media ownership, she said:

First of all, success is very subjective, it’s about being very authentic and as a Nigerian/African woman living in the diaspora, where you have to really own who you are 100% to be able to thrive and be able to have a strong voice and express yourself in the way that it should be.

How have I done that? It’s honestly by being myself and realising who I am: who is Clara? what’s your purpose, and what are you put on this earth to do? The moment I realised that, I knew that the only way for me to navigate that is to stay true to my person so that I don’t have to apologise when I walk into a room. I need you to see that this is me, this is all of me, and you’d take it as it comes.

The moment I embraced my personality, it made things a lot easier. I also leveraged networking to be honest and when you are authentic, people know when you are fake, people can see through your boo ha ha… Build a strong reliable network!

For the media work that I do, I’d honestly say it’s the team and the work they put in. I’ve been able to build a strong team who believe in my vision and I cannot thank them enough for it… Everything that I’ve built and leveraged so far I got from being true to myself, knowing who I am, and just holding fast to it.

When Joyce Jacob, a renowned Celebrity Makeup Artist with an eye for striking yet subtle makeup looks and the Director of Hair & Makeup for the 2nd season of Netflix‘s glamorous hit reality series YOUNG, FAMOUS & AFRICAN, was asked to share how she defines success for herself within the very diverse and saturated beauty industry, seeing that her career path highlights the need for artistic expression and career branding, she said:

For me, success is getting to the place where you are comfortable. When I say comfortable, I mean comfortable in your craft, comfortable in your talent, and comfortable in what you have to offer to the world…

Success is when you don’t have to work too hard. You know, I don’t have to bend over backwards; when I don’t have to do clickbait… You can actually just sit in your talent, sit in craft, and be confident that the bookings are going to keep rolling in; you’re going to stay booked and busy, and you’re going to keep achieving your dreams, for me that is success.

And also not getting carried away, cause in my industry it is so easy to get carried away. I started over 10 years ago, 2009 to be specific… and the industry has grown so beautifully. It’s been a beautiful thing to see and you can get carried away…

Part of my success has just been staying true to myself and it’s the #1 advice I will give to anyone starting a business… Just stay true to yourself, stay true to your signature, stay true to your craft, and I promise you, you will be successful.

Your work at Aso Ebi Bella celebrates African culture, how can we use entrepreneurship and digital platforms to define success beyond traditional stereotypical metrics and integrate cultural identity and social impact into our goals and why we should do these things?

Authenticity is where you find yourself, uniqueness is where you find yourself, not echoing other people’s voices but finding your own.

…GenZ and Gen Alpha you have the benefit of “being African” being cool now. We (Millenials) didn’t have that… and honestly we suffered from streotypes (a lot of misrepresentation) and it really took us defining what we want.

When it comes to women specifically, I love what we’ve done because things like fashion and even cooking have been looked down on. After all, women provide these services for free.

We provide them as part of our energy and giving beauty and light to the world; but us being able to say “No, take us seriously, this is a business, this ties into our identity, this says something, this makes money, this provides inspiration,” is so important.

We’ve even seen designers from international runways pick one or two inspirations from us, and it’s not like we need that validation but it shows that we have a unique authentic voice to bring.

So finding your voice, having the discipline to streamline it into a business and run a team around it, and staying true to yourself and improving your craft is really key… You also have to evolve while staying true to yourself.

I think it’s really important and I’m inspired by what I see going on currently.

— Nkechi (Ink) Balogun

What are some of the biggest stereotypes you’ve encountered as a successful African woman and how have you defined success for yourself in light of these expectations?

The biggest stereotype and I think most women can relate to this is “Oh she’s successful, someone is bankrolling her, someone is behind her, etc”. It’s just always someone else other than the person that’s truly behind the craft and that for me is the number one stereotype.

People don’t believe that it can be you all alone and I don’t know why this stereotype is always there but it’s disgusting and it’s false. You’d be surprised at how much you can achieve by yourself if you truly just put your mind to what you want to do.

You are enough and you should believe that you are enough! You don’t need to have anyone bankrolling or sponsoring you.

— Joyce Jacob

Your Guinness World Record attempt highlights the power of perseverance, what message do you have for young women facing challenges on their path to success? You’ve also moved from country to country and travelled to over 30 countries which is amazing, how has perseverance played a role in all of these things and your breaking the barriers to success?

It’s easy to tell someone to persevere, “you have to persevere and keep going”, but it’s easier said than done.

First of all the Guinness World Record attempt, I didn’t just wake up overnight and want attempt to break a record interviewing 94 people for 55 hours non stop. It was the most insane thing I’ve ever done in my life and it’s still ongoing and we hope to bring the news to life soon. However, perseverance is a big key… but it’s easier said than done.

If you want to achieve something, you just have to wake up and you go from it because no one is coming to save you. If you want to do it, you have an idea, you have a concept, go for it!

… How it works for me: I have an idea, I send an email out, and if I don’t get a response after 24 hours, I will be knocking at your door. Also if you say no to me, that’s okay. If you say go and restructure and come back, I will restructure and I will come back. That’s the way it is.

I don’t take no for an answer. If it doesn’t work for us, that is okay, I move on to the next person… and if you say no, I knock on another door. I keep trying again because I know one day, somebody will see the vision and say yes and that person becomes one of the team. I keep finding and looking for the person who sees the vision of where I am heading to.

There’s no perseverance without you putting action into it, it’s okay if it gets hard, cry if you have to but don’t stay down, pick up yourself and move forward. You need to find a way to get to the next level, if it takes calling the person that helps you feel the fire, call them… Build your step-by-step action and keep going.

Pelumi Nubi is the cover star of This Day Style magazine and in the feature interview, she discusses how her passion for exploration began, fueled by childhood travel novels and her parents’ encouragement. “My parents encouraged us to explore and took us on trips abroad at a young age, and I just fell in love with it,” she shares.

Her recent solo road trip from London to Lagos in her Peugeot 107, affectionately named “Lumi,” was born out of a deep-seated desire to immerse herself in different cultures and landscapes. “The inspiration for this journey came from a deep-seated desire to connect with different cultures and landscapes in a way that only road travel can offer,” she explains. Pelumi acknowledges the importance of representation in travel, expressing that she didn’t see enough people who looked like her engaging in overland travel.

In the interview, the newly appointed tourism ambassador for Lagos State reflects on her journey, discussing her favourite and least favourite countries she’s visited and candidly sharing aspects of travelling she doesn’t particularly enjoy. She also shares some travel tips to jot down in your travel diary for your next adventure.

See excerpts from the interview:

On what inspired her solo drive and fueled her conviction to do it

The inspiration for this journey came from a deep-seated desire to connect with different cultures and landscapes in a way that only road travel can offer. The conviction stemmed from a blend of adventurous spirit and wanting to chase adventure, coupled with the belief that such an endeavour while challenging, was an extraordinary opportunity for personal growth and exploration. I did not see enough people who looked like me doing overland travel, and I know the importance of representation.

On how she prepared for the journey

Preparation involved extensive research on the routes, securing necessary visas, understanding the geopolitical landscape of the countries to be traversed, and getting mentally fit for the challenge ahead. I spoke to people who had done similar trips to get direct advice from them. Additionally, preparing the vehicle for the long haul and learning basic mechanical repairs were crucial steps I took.

On the safety measures she took to ensure her safety

There were moments of doubt, particularly when facing unexpected challenges, but I had done a year of research to help with this. And after travelling to over 80 countries, you get some practice. However, the overarching goal of completing this journey and the support from the global travel community kept me going.

For safety measures, I chose well-lit, secure parking areas, often in designated camping spots or places known for their safety. Before settling in for the night, I’d ensure all doors were locked, and I kept valuables hidden or carried them with me to avoid attracting attention. I also had curtains or sunshades for privacy and to prevent anyone from seeing inside. Staying aware of my surroundings and trusting my instincts were crucial; if a location felt unsafe, I’d move on. I had an Air Tag for family members to know my exact location. Communication was key too; I kept a charged phone and shared my location with trusted contacts. By taking these precautions, I could rest more comfortably, maintaining a balance between adventure and safety.

With two extraordinary seasons delivered to our screens, The Real Housewives Of Lagos (RHOLagos), has become synonymous with high fashion, because its casts always come correct.

They did not disappoint on the recently released S2 reunion episode which is now airing on Showmax, keeping the energy as vibrant as ever they donned first-class pieces from some of Nigeria’s leading Designers. Let’s take a look at their breathtaking outfits below:

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer in Anjy Luminee Couture

Mariam Adeyemi Timmer was on a mission to serve us an ethereal goddess vibe in her white + tan classic gown with nude illusion details by Anjy Luminee Couture, highlighting her softer side.

The fierce Melanin Magic RHOLagos cast was adorned in an elegant mermaid dress with pearls and feathers embellishments and some drapings. Mariam complemented her look with a statement feather headpiece by Urez Kulture, a stylish low bun and dangling diamond earrings.

Faith Morey in Amy Aghomi

Just as she had said on the show, you’ll either see Faith Morey with a crown or a train. The six-foot Amazon goddess attended the reunion in a red 3D floral dress with golden-brown infusions, quite like her beautiful skin.

Designed by Amy Aghomi, a Lagos-Warri-based fashion designer, the dress had an exaggerated floral collar which extended above her head into a remarkable bouquet of red flower stalks and featured Faith’s signature flowing train.

She complemented her look with a diamond-studded neckpiece and accompanying diamond studs from Boz Jewelry. Her feet were strapped in complementary red-heeled sandals, her hair was sleeked back from her face though with a pretty centre part and she rocked a soft sultry glam with the exceptional look.

Laura Ikeji in Medlin Couture

Laura Ikeji showed up looking stunning in a high-slit beaded ivory dress by Medlin Couture paired with gloves and a rosette-embellished cape.

Styled by Medlin Boss and Gabriel Anthony, the bubbly RHOLagos cast complimented her look with side bangs, diamond accessories from Saint Tracys and feathery heels.

Dr. Rommel in Sevon Dejana

Dr Rommel stepped out in his distinct flamboyant style sporting a custom crystal-beaded yellow ensemble by Sevon Dejana featuring Naija’s traditional top layered with a cape.

The outfit was accompanied by a custom cap, coral beads and a gold-detailed walking stick to complete the look

British Vogue’s editorial leadership takes a historic step forward, passing from the groundbreaking tenure of Ghanaian Edward Enninful to the discerning eye of Chioma Nnadi of Nigerian descent.

Enninful, who shattered glass ceilings as the magazine’s first Black Editor-in-Chief, left a legacy of inclusivity and audacious style, paving the way for Chioma Nnadi to become the first black female Head, marking the dawn of a new era in fashion.

Nnadi, a fashion powerhouse, assumed the role with a unique perspective informed by her extensive years in fashion editorial. She joined Vogue in 2010 in New York and later worked running the American website of Vogue as well as writing for the magazine and co-hosting the Vogue podcast before taking up the reins last October as the Head of Editorial Content at British Vogue.

Resourceful and resilient: for me, those are the two words that truly underpin the brilliance of British style. Three decades later and, while much has changed in the 20 years I have been living in the US, London’s beautiful, creative, scrappy energy – one that just can’t be found or emulated anywhere else – remains undimmed.

And so, back on home turf with the new responsibility and supreme honour of taking up the mantle at British Vogue, I knew my first cover star needed to be someone who defined that inimitable spirit. Luckily for me, it was an easy choice.

FKA Twigs is an artist who represents the ideal of the modern British eccentric: she is a shape-shifter who rejects conformity and takes real joy in clothes. And as someone whose personal style was ignited by the clubbing scene, I was so inspired speaking with Twigs about her latest work and the always-alluring relationship between fashion and music.

She reminded me that it isn’t just about the runway – it exists and can be found in so many different places, be it at a rave or in our home lives.

Chioma said in her editor’s note

FKA Twigs whose real name is Tahliah Debrett Barnett is a British singer, songwriter, and dancer who became known as Twigs for the way her joints cracked.

She settled in Hackney in her early 20s becoming something of a local celebrity overnight when, in 2012, she was spotted by the photographer Matthew Stone at Hoxton Station the morning after a warehouse party. She got cast as an extra in a story for i-D. She’d end up on the magazine cover before she’d even signed to a record label.

I just want to be in touch with nature again though, that’s what it boils down to. I still feel so plugged into the culture. I want to rave, I want to make love, I want to meet people. But equally, I want to find peace.

Twigs speaking about her career, healing, love, her career, healing from abuse, her diagnosis, facing racism and the chaos of the real world.

According to the Vogue article, “as an artist, Twigs has always moved through the pop cultural universe at her own speed, often melding genres at opposite ends of the spectrum – opera with R&B, say – to form the contours of her singular sound. She’s stretched the boundaries of her physical body in every possible direction.

For her second album, Magdalene (2019), she mastered the ancient art of wushu sword fighting and ascended to the heavens on a stripper pole in the wildly popular video for “Cellophane”. Her approach to performance style has been just as mutable, defined only by her ability to shapeshift from one exquisitely dressed creature to the next.”

Between 2014 and 2016, Kimani released the single “Show“, produced by singer and producer Tekno Miles and other singles such as; Vex; Two of Dem;Loving You; and Booty Bounce“, featuring Tanzanian artists Diamond Platnumz and Ommy Dimpoz.

On 13 May 2015, Kimani and seven African female musicians, Cobhams Asuquo and a team of One Campaign staff met in Johannesburg to create Strong Girl. Clara Chizoba Kronborg

I know and I believe I understand what it feels like to yearn for success, to hope to live instead of survive, to want to be heard, to hope for that big breakthrough and to look forward that my submissions are no longer packed away and neglected.

Clara C. Kronborg

Clara Chizoba Kronborg is an award-winning media & social entrepreneur with multiple features across reputable media including BBC Africa, ARISE TV Africa and Talk Radio, Europe. She was born and raised in Onitsha, though she hailed from Okija in Ihiala local government, Anambra state, Nigeria.

In her words, “Growing up, I thrived in front of the mic, creating non-fiction drama and being that girl who motivates other young girls’’, but she never knew it was a thing or could even become one.

The Media path found her because the truth was that when she started the Women’s World Show in 2009, she had zero knowledge of what she was getting herself into, it was all passion but she started anyway. In 2010, she took a break from the show and moved to Ghana to study at the Ghana Institute of Journalism in Accra.

Soon after, in 2013, she met her husband and relocated to Denmark where she spent the next four years learning Danish, studying VUC & HF, and adjusting to her new life in Europe. In 2017, she once again started filming Women’s World Show in Denmark, with a private screening of the first season held on 6th December 2018.

In January 2019, she travelled to Nigeria and relaunched the Women’s World Show on Rave TV and Nigeria People’s TV. In November of the same year, Clara relocated to Marbella, Spain bringing the Women’s World Show with her! The show aired for the first time in Spain in October 2020 on RTV Marbella.

Clara became the first Black woman in Denmark and Spain to own a TV talk show, the first black woman in Marbella Spain to create an Exclusive Connect Event through the women’s world show where women get to exhibit their businesses, interact on common topics and connect with like minds.

With over 5000 minutes of recorded interviews and counting, she has connected with tens of female decision-makers, pacesetters and change-makers on record.

Years passed but her passion has only grown stronger than ever. She has evolved, is mentally & physically equipped, academically enlightened and has travelled to over 30 countries. Today, the Women’s World Show creates awareness of the challenges women face in their day-to-day endeavours…

…To recognize women of hard work; To provide services and products that showcase the beauty of a woman. To impact in young growing women that for every finished work/picture seen, comes with lots of efforts and perseverance, to be an emblem of Unity among women, to build a platform where women supports women, women uplifts women, to shine light on women stories in Europe & Africa and add to the development of African through women empowerment.

She is passionate about storytelling for a change; personal stories, stories of other women, content creation, and visual marketing stories. She is a skilled content creator, strategic planner, business developer, marketing strategist and media producer.

Clara has empowered about 100 women around African countries like; Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya respectively through making Entrepreneurs in the women’s world show and is currently mentoring 20. She is the author of ‘’Sexyfityou’’ a book that empowers women to be themselves regardless of their body size but at the same time feel sexy and fit in it.

She co-founded HC Andersen International School Enugu, Nigeria, with the purpose of promoting education in Nigeria/Africa.
She is the first black African founding president of the Rotary Club in Spain and has contributed to the extra-curriculum in media studies at the British International School, Marbella for 2 terms.

Our #BNSCONVOS has been nothing short of amazing this year, if you have been following the BellaNaija Style Women’s Month campaigns, you can agree that each session has been a build-up to how amazing the next session one will be.

A post shared by BellaNaija Style (@bellanaijastyle)

The session featured a liberating candid conversation between the hosts and our guests:

(1)Mitchel Ugochi Ukachukwu Miss Universe Nigeria, the 1st and only beauty queen in Nigeria’s history to clinch both titles of Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria and Miss Universe Nigeria; (2) Zainab Balogun a British-Nigerian Actress, TV Host, and the Executive Producer at ZABA Productions; and (3) Mojibade Sosanya who has built an impressive career as a corporate communications executive, event host, TV presenter, and public speaker.

When Motunde asked, “How has self-care and self-love played a role in your advocacy effort and how has it helped you own your narrative?”

… I shared my story because I didn’t want another woman to find it hard to get access to this information. In sharing my story I have been able to build a community of women who can identify with this pain and now know what to do.

Self care became important for me, owning my narrative became a form of self-care because I wasn’t allowing the world determine what I can share and what I can’t share. Self-care doesn’t have to be just going for beauty maintenance, it can also be you taking a moment to be still.

Zainab Balogun

When Motunde asked Mojibade about her techniques for building confidence and finding her unique balance after pivoting career paths amidst a busy schedule, her response revealed a strong mentality routed in self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-love.

First of all building confidence and finding balance requires work. I am big on preparation and in a male-dominated industry, I’ve gotten to the place where I know that I’m bringing value on board and I’ve gotten past the phase where it feels like I’m not good enough because people don’t acknowledge that I’m as good as my male counterpart.

I’ve gotten to the place where I am really confident in myself because for the client to choose me they believe I have value to offer. I also love myself and don’t compare myself. While there is room for improvement and personal development, I’m not going to change who I am.

I prepare to go on stage with the 3 Rs: I read, research and rehearse. This helps me to go on stage and shine in my uniqueness.

Mojibade Sosanya

When asked about her perspective on navigating her industry’s pressure and staying true to oneself and values, Mitchel shared as follows:

In keeping true to one’s self and values, the first thing is to understand what those words mean to you and once you have a clear definition of what self-confidence and self-expression mean to you then you’re on the right path of keeping true to your values because then you know what those values are.

It’s not easy because there is a lot of pressure to be perfect, to look a certain way, to do things a certain way to appear in certain places and it’s not easy to keep up with these things and that is why your foundation has to be strong so that you can set boundaries. People often externalise boundaries but it’s also important to set boundaries for yourself:

what are the things you can’t compromise on? What are the things I can’t let go of? Once you’re able to build this foundation, it helps you stay true to yourself and then you don’t easily succumb to the pressure… Having a great support system and the right people around you also helps.

A post shared by BellaNaija Style (@bellanaijastyle)

How can women embrace their unique identities in their fields and industries and also redefine beauty for themselves?

There is strength in knowing that everything that makes me who I am is ammunition, it’s power on its own, there is no other person like me. It doesn’t matter where I am, I know that I can buy a certain level of credibility with my uniqueness and I have to celebrate that.

I want to encourage women to have a sense of self awareness like no other. Be able to tell yourself what is true, what is fabricated and what is a lie.

Zainab Balogun

_

The digital world has penetrated more into society and it has stolen the opportunity to paint your life in the direction that you want without looking at anything that has been curated. It’s not a bad thing to have mentors and people that you look up to, however, you can get lost if you don’t have your own sense of individuality.

It is important to be able to differentiate between real life and social media; and have a strong foundation to enable you not to get carried away by the buzz.

Mitchel Ukachukwu

When asked how people can celebrate diversity and inclusivity within the concept of womanhood pulling from her recent viral interview on stereotypes against women and marriage, Mojibade Sosanya responded:

I am a single woman over 3o and I am not ashamed of it. I am single yet I am complete, highlighting the fact that there is no shame in singleness and there is no shame in desiring to be married.

I want to be married but I am not yet married and I am not going to put my life on hold until that happens, I am going to live my life to the fullest and I always preach this to every young female that I speak to wherever I go. I am happy to live my life to the fullest until marriage comes.

It is a completely horrible mindset to stereotype women that are not married and we must fight it. You can be 40 yet happy and single, singleness is not a condition, you are just unmarried and that is what it is. It doesn’t make you lesser than anyone who has gotten married and who gave us these timelines?

I need us to build a better society where women can live to their full potential whether they are married or not. A society without pressure and just letting people be and allowing them to breathe. Whatever phase you are in, allow yourself to breathe and bask in the beauty of that phase.

I am single, I am happy, I am thriving…

Watch the full interview for more inspiration and join us this Saturday at 5 PM WAT on @bellanaijastyle‘s Instagram LIVE for the final episode of #BNSCONVOS during the 5th edition of our Women’s Month celebration.

Two (2) visionary women who are the beautiful brains behind two (2) of Africa’s most in-demand global fashion brands joined BellaNaija Style to discuss “Strategies for Success in Dynamic Markets” on the 3rd episode of #BNSCONVOS during the 5th edition of BellaNaija Style Women’s Month.

In an insightful LIVE conversation moderated by Oluwadunsin Sanya a leading editor at BellaNaija, Kanyinsola Onalaja, the founder and lead designer at the Onalaja brand and Toluwani Wabara, the owner and creative director of Wanni Fuga shared tested and proven strategies for success in today’s VUCA world from their point of view.

On switching careers and establishing Wanni Fuga, Toluwani said:

It started with wanting a simple outfit for a day out with friends and not being able to find one. Then I started to follow my mum to the market who was in the fashion business at that time. While she did her own thing I’d wander off to do my own thing and get her tailors to bring my designs to life. People started noticing what I was wearing, which was how the brand started.

On what inspired her fashion journey and formed into Onalaja, Kanyinsola said

My mum was also in the fashion industry but not conventionally. She created fabrics for other designers and taught me how to sew, how to draw, and all the things required for the foundation so I could build on it.

I also went down the traditional route of going to fashion school for undergrad and master studies. I worked as an embroidery consultant in the fashion industry for a while and just like my mum, I created fabrics for other designers. I just took the jump, to find the gap in the market and find pieces that spoke to me.

On maintaining originality while being innovative in an ever-changing market while staying true to brand identity and values, the women had this to say:

The brand strategy hasn’t changed, it’s just being streamlined and focused and we are being very intentional about everything that we do with the business module. We decided to go more of a made-to-order approach so that everything is tailored and custom-made to meet the needs of the client.

Community building is important to me so it’s not just about me, there’s a larger picture. So I place a high priority on my customers. On innovation, I am very flexible and adaptable to see what works and doesn’t, I’m also very big on textiles and texture.

It’s about the process and building on the knowledge I have. What can I do to make this fabric different? So for me, it’s taking the small and building on it with the knowledge I have.

Kanyisola Onalaja

_

Innovation is important if you want to lead the market and innovation requires creativity and creativity requires information.

I’ve been able to identify this and so I bring it forward with my team, we have a business strategy meeting; Wanni Fugai is not just me, it’s a bunch of people who have come together for the business to be what it is today. In these meetings, we review trends, develop prototypes, do a lot of trial and error, we review what our competitors doing.

Innovation isn’t only about designs as a fashion creator, it can range from anything like your operational approach, your customer service, and your marketing. Staying updated on different areas of your business is important. Early adaptation to trends is important, you don’t want to jump on something too late so you don’t potentially miss an opportunity.

At all times, I try to draw my team basic to our core values so that in everything this core values/mission statement guides the team and the business as a whole.

— Toluwani Wabara

On diverse educational background and this has affected her approach to entrepreneurship in the Nigerian fashion industry, Toluwani said:

I had no prior foundation in fashion so in terms of fashion knowledge I’m working backwards. I’ve had to learn things on the job and also take myself back to learn. Learning can be hard but I’m getting on with it fine, I had to take various courses and I’m currently still learning too.

On balancing jumping on trends and still creating timeless pieces

It goes back to your mission statement and ethos. What is it that your brand represents? Once you identify that, it’s easier to realise that not every trend applies to your brand and filter through it.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: There are elements of African arts and tradition in your design, how does this contribute to the representation of African fashion on the global stage?

I’m half Yoruba and half Edo and so most of my inspiration comes from both tribes. Whether it’s with the hand beading the textures or the colours, I just love to represent where I’m from.

What makes Africa amazing is that there are so many different versions of Africa and it’s an opportunity to show how diverse we are and how we can cater to various silhouettes and demographics but still be African.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Q: Will you say that international recognition and attention have opened up opportunities for you and other African designers?

I think so, there are more opportunities now to interact with buyers, and showrooms and just put ourselves out there and with social media there is a dynamic way with what we are doing.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

It all just comes down to international exposure. Seeing more growth, interacting with more customers and opening our businesses up to new markets. It also opens the brand up for feedback, good or bad. These feedbacks are taken into consideration when developing new products for the brand.

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: Has international exposure influenced your approach to brand visibility and brand growth?

As much as the brand is growing and becoming more visible, the core thing is that we are catering to our customers and creating very special pieces for them. We decided to do made-to-order where our customers can request for the dresses to be created for specific things. We also create these pieces for every other event. More than the brand visibility, the community matters.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

You must be prepared for the feedback that this visibility gives you. Also, monitor the insights because it gives you a lot of information about where these customers are coming from.

— Toluwani Wabara

When asked what lessons they have learnt from interacting with high-profile clients, the women had this to say

Make your quality speak for you, focus on making your products the best possible version they can be, and be open to feedback. It’s really about the quality of your work.

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

Whether it’s hiring more hands or working overtime because you want to sustain and retain these customers. Feedback matters too because you want these customers to keep patronising you

— Toluwani Wabara

Q: What growth opportunities did you seize? How can budding fashion entrepreneurs identify these opportunities?

You have to have a strong narrative and identity to be able to cross borders. Your community also have to understand what this identity is. You also have to put yourself out there more

Kanyinsola Onalaja

_

We focus on watching trends. My team scan to see what is new and trending and this keeps me informed during the product development phase and helps with marketing strategies both locally and internationally. We sometimes have to switch our focus when we see it necessary, it’s all dependent on consumer behaviour.

Q: How do you approach mentorship and collaboration within the industry?

Knowing that not everything is a competition and you can collaborate in different ways. It’s also good to have not just a community of customers but a community of creatives, designers and people who have the same vision as you

Kanyinsola Onalaja

Mentorship and collaboration are important and the future of collaboration between female entrepreneurs is looking very promising as women today continue to break down barriers. Collaboration is important because it allows you to share knowledge, and experience and pull each other’s expertise.

The onus is on you as a brand owner to reach out to whoever you want to collaborate with. Do your research about the brand and person, reach out to them and give them a proposal that they can’t resist.

There is no doubt that these women poured from the enormous wealth of knowledge they have accumulated over the years building their impressive businesses.

Hi BellaStylistasBNStyle Plus Sound is back! This is a mini-series our team developed during #BNSWomensMonth22 to celebrate how our faves use their style to elevate their brand and inspire us with their fabulous looks. We will be highlighting their fashion highlights each week this month. For this year’s edition, we will spotlight 4 amazing female artists with incredible styles.

Aya Coco Danioko, known by her stage name Aya Nakamura, is a Malian-French pop singer who published her music online, gaining a following with “Karma” and “J’ai mal“. Notably, her song “Brisé“, garnered traction on Youtube.

She released her debut album “Journal Intime” in 2017, closely followed in 2018 by Nakamura, which was certified Diamond in France. Two (2) years after its release, the Nakamura album passed the billion streams mark on Spotify, making her the most listened-to French-language female artist on Spotify.

Aya is known for her sleeky straight hairstyles. Her fashion sense cuts across comfort and sultry. She’s boldly voluptuous, her style blends confidence with what’s been described as a Parisian flair.

In the vast world of hair care, few brands can claim a journey as remarkable as El’Rog. Founded by the visionary entrepreneur Elsie Rogers, this UK-approved natural unisex hair growth and hair care products company has gone from humble beginnings to become a renowned global brand.

Elsie’s inspiration for Unisex Hair Growth was sparked during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a woman going through menopause, she found herself battling with not just hormonal changes, but the stress of lockdown and homeschooling two sons one with Autism and the other preparing for A’Level exams. As she saw her once beautiful hair thinning, she embarked on a quest to find a solution.

This led Elsie to delve into a two-year extensive research on the benefits of natural plants and oils for damaged hair and dry scalp and discovered natural products across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Oceania. Combining her findings with her passion for creating effective solutions, Elsie began experimenting with formulations in her kitchen.

With the help of her intelligent son, Christian, the birth of Opal – a revolutionary unisex hair growth serum – marked the turning point for El’Rog. It is UK cosmetic-approved and uniquely formulated with 14 natural products such as black rice, green tea and rosemary.

Not stopping at hair care alone, Elsie recognized the neglected realm of beard care. Observing that many men failed to give their beards the attention they deserved, El’Rog extended their range to include products like the popular Citrine men’s beard growth and moisturising oil, which is also UK cosmetic-approved.

Today, El’Rog’s products have found their way into Amazon’s FBA in the UK and will be across Europe and Africa by the summer of 2024. Products can be shipped to Africa via her website. With a commitment to creating natural and effective solutions, El’Rog has become a trusted name for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their hair and unleash their full potential.

Beyond her success with El’Rog, Elsie’s professional background brings immense credibility to her brand. With over 25 years of experience in business change and transformation, she has led high-profile projects across various industries, spanning banking, finance, insurance, retail, payment card, and government sectors.

Elsie Rogers’ journey from personal struggle to global hair care success exemplifies the power of persistence, insight, and the determination to create products that truly make a difference. As El’Rog continues to expand its reach, it is clear that Elsie’s passion and transformative vision will remain at the heart of this exceptional brand.

Finally, to forge stronger ties with our customers who may face import expenses, we are eager to extend our affiliate programme to Africa, specifically Nigeria. We are elated to welcome individuals who wish to partake in this opportunity and engage with our brand, while also mitigating any potential financial hardships associated with import fees.
